Customer Reviews:
Be warned!.......2007-07-21
This is an attractive and small camera, with lots of features. It works well--when it works! Joy turns to disappointment very quickly, though. Mine was never, ever dropped, or knocked; it was treated only with delicacy. Nor was it even used very often, before it quit. LCD view square on the back was bright and worked well (though in daylight outside you OFTEN can't see a darn thing in it--it needs some sort of lip around its edge to keep the screen shaded for your viewing). That state of affairs ended suddenly less than a month after I got the camera. Suddenly, about two weeks into ownership of the camera: while the camera was turned on, it would just go black. Not turn itself off, just go altogether black and refuse to take photos. I could turn it off, though. Shortly after that, it went black forever. Well...except for twice when I was fiddling around turning it on and off and doing various things in the fond hope of resuscitating it, when, suddenly, there was the LCD screen in bright colour again. As soon as I turned the camera off, though, and then back on, the screen was gone again, and the camera refused to take any photos. I tried everything: manually resetting all Settings, resetting to factory reset, etc. Have switched the memory chip into another camera where same chip works perfectly, so it's nothing to do with that. Occasionally (for I still sometimes turn it on and hope for the best) I can see the faintest of outlines of reality showing dimly on the LCD screen, and can actually take a photo, which in playback does show up there, but just as faintly as it appeared on the LCD screen. I tried the video function, and got sound (way too loud, by the way, as it always was from the beginning--catches beetles breathing at 40 yds; you cld diagnose your heart, using this--ok, here I exaggerate just a tad, but not elsewhere) but just the faintest, dimmest hint of what I'd pointed the camera at. All other functions work: flash, menu, sound; the camera just won't light the LCD screen or record a photo with any reasonable degree of light (and mostly, not at all). I've no idea what caused the camera to go wonky to start with (let alone quit) but I did at first have an impression that possibly, in the beginning, it had some connection to using the zoom function. (Incidentally, I had turned off digital zoom, in the Settings menu, so camera only ever was set to use optical--how could that confuse the camera?) Whatever the reason, this camera is a DUD--and only a month, in fact the trouble STARTED LESS than a month, after acquiring it (brand new).
Another complaint: Back during the short period the camera WAS working, I tried using the macro function for photoing printed matter, a task I am able to do with an older model of Fuji digital camera quite well. I was unable, however, with several efforts, to find a way of doing it, with the A350, that would be properly in focus; I wasted HOURS coming up with only blurred messes; whereas the older, 3.2 MP Fuji camera does it right, every time, and I don't even need to worry about precise distance from the surface.
One minor annoying detail is that the camera's manual doesn't seem to anticipate that anyone would ever just use a memory card reader to transfer photo files, rather than using a USB-wire (for which Fuji says you should use their Fuji adaptor, which of course would be a further considerable expense). I just use a card reader, for both cameras. No problem with the older model, and when it worked, there was no problem transferring with memory cards from the A350, either. The manual's silence on this matter leaves a newbie feeling anxious, though.
Handy little camera.......2007-05-08
I have recently purchased this camera, and bought it at a high street store in a clearance sale.
I think some of the other reviews are unnecessarily harsh. To address the point of the LCD screen: there is an optical viewfinder on this camera - to use it will improve your composition and reduce wastage of batteries. At night you can still use the optical viewfinder!
My criteria for purchasing a digital compact camera was to pay less than £50, have a good optical zoom, as many mp as i could afford and to not buy a camera that's too large.
I have good quality cameras, DSLR's etc, and was just looking for a pocket camera for nights out etc, that i can just pop in my handbag.
I've been very satisfied with the quality of prints i've achieved. I don't feel that 10x8" enlargements would be as good quality, but using a camera like this you're probably going to make photo's 6x4 or 7x5 and this camera is more than adequate for this purpose.
I find it quite sturdy and intuitive to use. I'm really chuffed with my little bargain!
Break because of heat.......2007-03-01
I took this camera to Spain last year, and on the 4th day (1st day took out) it broke, took it back to Argos where i bought and the fixed it, going on holiday again this year and hopeing that it wont break, the camera just kept saying 'zoom error', i think they should look into this problem and fix it on all cameras they sell.
The pic qulaity is good, never had a digtal camera before, the movie clips are also of a good standard. I bought a higher memory card for mine and now can take over 200 pics on the high quality.
I would say if you are wishing to buy a camera to take to hot places, then dont by this one, BUT it works fine back in the UK. Next time i by a camera i will make sure i find one with a bulit in battery, as the batterys run out very quick!
Overall a nice cheap camera and is ok for your family snaps, JUST keep all documents that you get with it.
Not as good as you first think.......2006-10-11
As my second digital camera, I once again went for a fujifilm, as they are incredibly simple to use and easy to produce a good, basic image. However, the camera is complete with many faults not apparent until you give it a good use.
The LCD screen is small and always very dark - it is not backlit, so you will be constantly playing with the settings unnecessarily to increase brightness. Due to its size the screen is hard to see both in bright light and darkness.
In fact, night photography is the camera's main flaw. The screen gives no indication of what is in the frame due to its darkness, so composition of a good photo at night falls to chance. Many other cameras can estimate an image in the dark, but this cannot, and what you see on the screen is what the picture will look like once uploaded to a computer. I have seen much better cameras for similar prices with regards to night photography.
The only way to achieve twilight images is to use the camera's natural light long-exposure mode, which almost always blurs images unless using a tripod or support. There is no option to have a short exposure without a flash.
In addition (though this may be a one-off), my camera broke when exposed to high ambient temperature - the Fuji FinePix A350 does not work in the heat of inland Brazil!
Simple and cheap for use for straight forward day photography, but there are far better for the price for anything beyond this.
Easy to use camera; good definition.......2005-12-26
My first digital camera which I am finding very easy to use and am very pleased with the results. The camera is simple to understand and the handbook is well written and again simple. The camera is light to handle and not too small for those with big fingers; the LCD display is a reasonable size but difficult to see in bright light. Using the menus is straight forward after a day or so. There are lots of options from close-ups (for photographs of plants for example) to various flash options.
Like so many cameras it is heavy on batteries but I find that rechargeable AA batteries (not included)have a good life. Also it is necessary to have a larger memory card, I bought a 256 card, but a 128 would serve most people.
The software was easy to install on my computer but the "autoplay" feature didn't function (however Fuji helpline were very helpful and sorted the problem out within two minutes. The programme allows a number of simple functions to be carried out (eg to remove red-eye).
It is necessary to keep switching between "photo-mode" and "play-back" to view the last photo taken.
Overall I'm very pleased with the camera especially for the price.
A good value, simple to use camera which produces very good photographs.
