Fuji's F601 is the follow-up to the popular F6800 and has a wealth of options for avid digital camera users. Based around a vertical orientation instead of the usual horizontal one it will at first be unfamiliar territory for those used to a 35 mm camera, but once you've put aside your differences the images that the F601 produce are very good.
Fuji cameras sit in a docking unit, making wires dangling around the desk a thing of the past. This is a nice addition for the newcomer keen to make the transfer of files to the PC as easy as possible.
Working on the third generation Super CCD that FujiFilm is renowned for, the 3.1 million pixels can be boosted up to a whooping six megapixels. Running from the 3x optical zoom lens, which has an aperture of f2.8-f8 the camera can achieve a 36-108 mm equivalent focal length on a 35 mm camera. On top of this, the F601 also offers a macro mode and 4.4x digital zoom to boot.
Manual settings offer control of everything. The most impressive being the ability to set the ISO setting to 1600 making this an ideal camera for speed or night work. Combine that with the option to capture 40 frames a second and you've got a great camera for sporting events. Other options to keep you entertained include five pre-programmed shooting modes, five flash modes and six white balance settings.
Image quality overall is very good. The camera copes well in both night and daylight settings. The macro mode gets you close but not that close, which can be a bit of a setback if you are looking for this function, but then with a macro mode of 20 cm this camera never professes that this is one of its strong points. Colours are well covered and detail strong without too much noise--even when shooting with the 1600 ISO setting. --Jason Denwood

Perfect multimedia tool?.......2004-03-27
When researching my first digicam,only two met all my specs - this and the Nikon CP4300.I handled both,but was seduced by the tough alloy body,style,compactness and video/audio capability of this little Fuji. Offering Auto,Scenes,AP,SP and full Manual control,it delivers perfect shots time after time.I always shoot at 3mp fine - I have never used the 6mp setting;you have to remember that bigger files take longer to load and use up more file space.I have successfully printed up to about A4 size.In short a great camera to travel with - but buy a 128mb card and a spare battery,then you can shoot 100 or so photos without removing the card at all.Back home,transfer of images to PC is a doddle using the docking station,and Finepix viewer is easy to use.There simply aren't many cameras in the sub-£300 bracket which can do what the F601z can.Sadly it is now discontinued!
Good On The Move Cam.......2003-08-31
I purchased this camera in Feb this year and it has been fabulous, I can't fault the quality of the pictures, the features and modes, (of which I'm sure I live in partial ignorance) nor the ease of use, however where it really scores is it's size, it can be popped in a shirt pocket or slipped into the belt carrying case and can be got at quickly when those once in a lifetime situations pop up.. as a keen motorcyclist I've found it invaluable.
It came with a cradle and has 1 button download facility, which works perfectly with WinXP the cradle also doubles as a recharger.
Software is terrible and not worth installing, but don't let that put you off!
Good camera but could be better........2002-08-25
I was looking for a replacement for my compact SLR and chose the 601. Its small size means you really can take it anywhere and hardly notice you're carrying it. The quality of the pictures is superb. I use the 3MP setting, which produces great looking prints on A4.
The docking cradle and software make downloading pictures and charging the battery a dream, especially as I used to have a camera that took rechargable AA cells - what a pain that was.
Don't worry about the controls, I've got quite large hands but I find the "joystick" control no problem.
Three things I would improve are:
1. The LCD is small, which means that you really have to zoom in to check your pictures.
2. The menus take a lot of getting used to and you could easily miss a great shot whilst trying to get the camera into the right mode.
3. You have to use the cradle to display the pictures on TV. This can be a bit of a pain if you want to show your shots to a few people, especially if you're not at home. A "slide show" mode would have been good.
I'd recommend this camera but you'll need to buy a bigger memory card unless you take all your pictures on a low quality setting (in which case you should buy a cheaper camera!)
Also have a look at the Cannon S30 and S40.
Wow!.......2002-07-31
I've had the camera 2 weeks and used it in very bright sunshine and at night on the London Eye taking shots of the Houses of Parliament and the Thames. The results were uniformly excellent, far exceeding my expectations of a digital camera. It's small enough to take virtually anywhere but good enough to make very large prints without losing quality. I took a beautiful London night sky shot on the 6 million pixel setting and printed it on A3 photo paper. The image produced is stunning. I have no complaints at all bar the standard memory of the card - my advice would be to get two 128mb cards so you'll never be caught short. The docking cradle makes transferring pictures easy and the Adobe software in the bundle is excellent. My Canon 35 mil SLR may go into permanent retirement.
Compact and Competent.......2002-06-21
Having travelled extensively, I was looking for a compact, good quality, point and shoot camera that I could take anywhere and not have to worry about an enormous camera bag with all the accessories. The idea being that i could take pictures of whatever and whom-so-ever took my fancy, record it on my laptop and develop only those few that really appealed to me.
And this is the camera that does all that!
It is loaded with features, (low light, action photo, mini-movie, sound recorder etc) has a really reasonable battery life and most importantly it takes fantastic photos. I have developed several perfect quality photos.
The price tag is steep but it is really worth it if you want both the advantage of digital with quality prints. I agree that the 16meg card is too small, you will need to upgrade if you want to take a lot of photos.
Only problem: the first camera had a software problem and slowly broke down. I exchanged it with no hassle and the new one is working like a dream.
