Whats all the fuss about the I Pod?.......2005-12-27
Getting to the point, this was all that i could have asked for, and more! When it arrived it looked the part (having half expected it to be flimsy or cheaply designed considering the price), and after less an hour of installing the 'iriver plus' (software to put your music onto the MP3 player) and getting the newest updates to the software from the iriver website, i was ready to put music onto the little thing.
It was easy to do, and after a week of playing with the software you will be putting stuff onto the player faster that anything.
All in all i think the iriver is a great buy, works like a ipod, looks better than a ipod, is cheaper than a ipod, oh and is in colour and can store photos, text, and has an FM radio built in.
What more could you want for the money?

Quality in everyway, the best there is!.......2005-08-02
Battery life is excellent, I get at least 10/12 hours play at high volumes, enough to last me a working week. The menu system is fast and the colour screen looks great, especially compared to those dull iPods... Overall the H10 is a great looker, and has excellent build quality. It is quite slim and slips into shirt pockets or inside jacket pockets quite nicely. What is also great is you can plug the H10 into any PC and it recognises it like a removable drive (no drivers required). This means you can manage your music or other files on the H10 from any PC!
IRiver products have a reputation for excellent sound quality, and the sound quality of the H10 is up there with the best. The Seinheiser headphones are as good as you can get, and they really are the icing on the cake. I haven't even begun using it's picture and text viewing capabilities...
Bad points: FM reception wasn't bad, could be better, but it depends where you are. The clear rubber case is not nice, it makes the H10 look chunky and does not feel nice. I'm looking for another case... The iRiver software, although slick, could be better as it doesnt allow encoding to mp3, only WMA, but you could always use the excellent Windows Media Player, or something like WinAmp Pro.
Overall, this is an excellent, quality MP3 play. If you upgrade the firmware, this is by far the best MP3 player out there in the 4/5/6 GB capacity range. If you want the best, buy it now!
Better than an ipod..........2005-06-25
I've used ipod minis and my H10 alot now, but i have limited experience with the zen micro. All i can say about it is that it is plastic, has a dodgy headphone jack and some bizarre on board navigation.
Size and Shape
The H10 is a tiny bit bigger in volume than an ipod mini, but the dimensions are better- being alot thinner. It looks great too, although no one with an ipod mini will admit it. The metal rim around the controls and screen is a nice touch. I noticed that my H10 appeared slightly purple sometimes, but it was still a good colour. It's made up of aluminium like the ipod and is very sturdy, which is more than can be said for the zen micro. The paint doesn't scratch of either which is a real problem with the mini.
The ipod IS a design classic though, so, 1-0 to the ipod.
Functionality
The h10 is not only for music, you can view photos (".jpg" only) as well thanks to the colour display. While the screen isn't huge, it's bigger than the rest, so it's definately a plus, for example the colour-coded menus make it easier to navigate. There is also support for ".txt" files. 1 all!
The screen switches off after 30seconds to save battery, but you can turn this option off.
Iriver have managed to pack an fm radio into the H10, which can even be recored off (either timed or by pressing select when listening to radio). Couple this with a built in microphone and it's 3-1 to the H10.
The vertical touchpad, similar to that on the creative zen micro, takes some getting used to, and could be more sensitive (maybe a firmware update will change this). Personally I prefer the click-wheel, but the iriver compensates this with some clever shortcut buttons:
holding back takes you to the main menu, holding select when browsing puts a song into the quick playlist, pressing play on the side takes you to the now playing screen.
On the ipod mini you have to go through menu after menu. There are problems with track access times, but the ipod also has this problem. No gain for the ipod then. 3-2.
Sound quality
The H10 sounds brilliant, and comes with around 30 equilizers, including SRS Wow, which in a word is "WOW". All of the SRS settings can be adjusted on the go, making for amazing depth during playback. There is also support for protected wma files which are updated through windows media player. This gives better compression than mp3 AND sounds better (take that Apple). From my experience the ipod doesn't sonud good, and crackles at higher volumes. 4-2 to iriver.
The earphones are quite good too, so you don't have to go out and buy some new ones.
Battery
The battery life is indeed the 12hours it's meant to be, and can be extended with more batteries, which can quickly be swapped around. Each goes for £20 each and are easy to get hold of. The real bonus of this is that if anything goes wrong with the power you don't have to send your unit back to apple for a $100 replacement battery. The ipod minis ive used only managed about 8hours, but the new models are supposed to be better. 5-2 to the iriver.
Software
I don't use iriver plus for syncing, but instead chose windows media player. Syncing is simple- connect the device, click sync, click on all music and go! This didn't work properly until i updated the player. For updating the firmware, and setting radio presets, i use iriver plus. Both of these are located in the options menu. Copying photos and text is easy, just go through "my computer" and copy them into the photo folder, same for text into the text folder. All files and folders can be viewed in browser mode on the player.
I-Tunes is good software, but if you already use windows media player then there are no problems, making this a major plus.
Value
Originally, the H10 was £190, but ipod price cuts meant that it was in turn reduced to £155. In the box you get everything you need apart from a docking cradle that you'll have to have for line in recording. It's a little more than an ipod, but you do get an extra gig, and more features it's a bargain. Expect a 6gb very soon (see the iriver site for more). 6-2 to iriver!
Overall
The iriver is definately the best of the bunch, but if you use I-Tunes or a mac your better off with an ipod. If only iriver had refined the firmware before release...
Note
1)Im using firmware 2.05, which i updated in about 30seconds using iriver plus.
2)ignore the bad reviews of this player, as almost all the problems have pretty much been fixed by iriver's continuos upgrades (track order in particular).
3)As far as i know the H10 is window only.
4)Viewing photos takes up alot of battery life.
enjoy!
