NIKON 5400.......2005-01-07
EXCELLENT CAMERA
I used it throughout a 6 month trip around suth america. it got wet i droped it several times and it still worked. i bought a 1gig card which gave me 400+photos. I also took 3 batteries which was more than enough. The battery power was enough for a good 100 photos each. This made me a little trigger happy and have almost 10000 photos. with this number taken a my lack of skill at photography the law of averages means i have some cackers. the camera which i bought a year ago, when it first came out was quite expencive (£200 more than it is now)was a great investment. nb if you are abroard and are charging your batteries regally you can buy the universal lead to the charger in even the most remote backwater. since being away almost a year ago now, i have continued with my trigger happy approach to photography and still achieve great results. the panoramic set up is very good too
Great for those moving up from point 'n' shoot........2004-03-26
I've owned several simple point 'n' shoot digicams over the years and decided that it was time I moved up to a camera that let me take control when I wanted to. An Xmas trip to Iceland - with the chance of seeing (and photographing) the Northern Lights was the impetus I needed.
The 5400 looked to be the ideal candidate - all the reviews rave over the excellent wide angle (28mm equiv) lens. And it would allow me to take full control of exposures when I needed to.
It performed faultlessly. The semi-automatic Program mode was perfect for most scenarios, but it was the night-time shots that were the real gems. With full manual control long exposures were simple. The wide-angle lens captured huge swaths of the sky. And the image quality was astounding. The final results were good enough to win Picture of the Month in Astronomy Now magazine! Not bad for somebody who'd never touched anything more than the shutter release on a camera before.
A professional view.......2004-02-19
I am a professional, full time, digital imaging lecturer with daily access to several dozen Nikon D1H and D1X cameras. I was looking for a small digital camera for day to day personal use. Having compared the features on the 5700 and the 5400 it became obvious that the newer 5400 was the better camera, despite lacking a couple of the 5700s features, such as an internal LCD screen etc.
Analysis of the images produced by the 5400 has shown them to be as good as, if not better than, the D1X in most situations. The build quality of the camera itself is excellent.
There are a couple of minor niggles, notably the absence of a 'raw' file facility (of minor importance unless you have invested in full colour management equipment). The controls can appear slightly complicated to some, however the camera can be used as a 'point and shoot' in program mode.
Connection to Windows XP is not a problem as the camera is WEA compliant and so needs no special software. Just set-up the Scanner & Camera options in the Windows control panel and you can, if you wish, just plug in the USB cable and watch the images download automatically to your hard drive without any user intervention - what could be easier.
I thoroughly recommend this camera.
Coolpix 5400 - Incompatibility -Wide Angle Converter & Flash.......2004-01-02
This is a brilliant five star camera only spoilt by problems that arise with flash operation when the Wide Angle Converter is fitted.
The Coolpix 5400 does not produce satisfactory photographs in flash mode with this lens fitted because the lens blocks the cameras photocell sensor.
The lens also blocks the cameras inbuilt flash giving a shadow.
There is no obvious indication of this problem in the sales literature.
The problem is only partially resolved by using a Nikon SB 800 Speedlight.
The Nikon SB 800 Speedlight instructions for the Coolpix 5400 recommend using a TTL setting with the Coolpix 5400.
This is fine with the standard lens, but unfortunately does not work with Wide Angle Converter lens fitted.
The problem again is the position of the cameras photocell.
Manual flash operation can be achieved by setting the flash gun to A and then manually setting up features on the camera such as aperture.
The automatic point and shoot features of the 5400 in this mode for the flash gun are then incompatible.
The ability to use the camera in "Scene Mode" and the default recommended "Auto Mode" for point and shoot users appear to be lost. Features such as automatic flash operation under low light conditions and the other flash features normally part of the cameras operation with its standard lens also appear to be lost.
You may wish to warn customers thinking of purchasing the wide angle attachment of these issues.
NB the lens and camera are excellent except when it comes to flash operation.
Have raised the issues with Nikon Technical and have suggested if they can not resolve the problem for customers by electronic means that they should provide a simple optical periscope arrangement for the Coolpix 5400 so that the photocell on the camera can then see over the Wide Angle Converter.
Have also suggested they might achieve something similar with an optical fibre accessory.
It is a great shame that this outstanding camera and lens system is spoilt by this issue.
No doubt Nikon with their reputation for service and quality will swiftly provide purchasers who wish to use the Wide Angle Converter with the Coolpix 5400 and with their SB 800 Speedlight with a fix.
Nikon Love it & hate it.......2003-11-20
This camera has a wonderful 28mm wide angle and the fold out screen easy to use. The camera feels right if you do long distance hikes or outdoor sports. The ability to stick in a 2Cr5 battery can come useful if you get stuck. Its nightmare begins with the firmware software which absolutely will not let you connect to the camera via Windows Xp, use a usb card reader. Balancing this is the other software included. The panorama program is the best I have used and Adobe elements 2 means you need no more software for editing unless like me you are in to photo art. It is crazy the way Nikon has put the connections for power and output around the camera, the rubber covers will fall off and are a disaster. Have a look at the Canon G3/G5. The G3 is my main camera. The second dial on top would be put to better use for some of the controls on the back plate. Overall this camera takes sharp photos in most situations, the scene mode is great fun and the quality of the video mode means those away for long trips could do without a camcorder but 2x512mb compactflash cards would come in handy along with a spare battery.
