Good performance, but NOT perfect........2005-09-01
Pros:
1. Long telephoto lens (52-525mm)
2. Quality lens (zoomed and un-zoomed picture quality is indistinguishable)
3. Large resolution picture (up to 8 million pixels at TIFF format)
4. VR mode which improves picture quality when hand held
Cons:
1. No wide angle range.
This can be done by fitting on wide angle adaptor, at extra cost (17mm £127, 42mm £79), it works like a filter that attaches to the front of the camera.
2. Requires adaptor to fit filters and lens (two can be fitted at wide angle range, one at telephoto range. Time consuming process, possible damage to the camera/lens due to the filter blocks the extension of the lens).
3. Minimum aperture is F8
But picture quality remains sharp due to digital make up of the camera and in-camera image sharpening tool.
4. Maximum ISO sensitivity is only 400, with grainy image produced at fast shutter speed.
5. Like conventional camera, red and green is vividly reproduced at the end picture, but the blue is not so.
This problem can be reduced by manually set the white balance, with extra time needed to do so.
Conclusion:
Insufficient as a professional camera, highly recommend jumping to buy/use DSLR instead (at additional £150 cost). But never the less, it's about 25% cheaper, and its performance is 25% poorer that D70.
Excellent Camera.......2005-04-13
I researched and agonised over what camera to buy for over a year. In the end it came down to a choice between the Konica Minolta Dimage A200 and this one. I finally chose this camera because it had a better zoom but it was not an easy choice to make. Having bought it I am really pleased with it. Yes, the write times are a little slow but it more than makes up for this in all other respects. The zoom is amazing, the movie mode almost like having a camcorder, macro is fantastic, and it is quite straightforward to use. Worth every penny.
Shares the low light autofocus problems with the 8700.......2005-02-08
I've owned the Coolpix 8700 in the past and it's a fine camera, with just one gripe - the autofocus ability is severely limited in low light. I talked to Nikon in case it was a one off fault, but they confirmed that I wasn't the only one to raise this. Just got my hands on an 8800 and unfortunately the problem is still there. Such a shame, as otherwise the results are excellent and the camera handles so well.
It's frustrating when you can see the image on the LCD scanning in and out of focus and not locking on, but at least if it's that light you could focus manually. What is really annoying is if the light is so low that there's nothing on the LCD (e.g. flash shots at a party) the autofocus assist is next to useless. This is worst when zoomed.
A wonderful camera.......2005-02-04
This is a wonderful camera, but be warned, the Nikon 8800 is a very serious camera indeed and deserves to be treated seriously.
I own a Nikon 5700 and the 8800 is a direct linear improvemnt on that excellent camera. The new 10x optical zoom is a real winner, so are the improvments Nikon have made in the acessability of the menus. (Good job, too. I think there are about 100 menus listed in the very concise, informative handbook)
But as a professional photographer what has blown me away is the Vibration Reduction system. If like me, you thought it was a gimmick, forget it! it is NOT. Yesterday, on a cold, dark, murky morning, I photographed birds on the Otter Estuary using full optical and digital zoom. The birds were so far away, I could hardly see them. The results are miraculous!! NOT perfect pictures, granted, but HANDHELD at a 60th of a second... it would have been impossible without a tripod... no - I really wouldn't have even tried with any other camera. I then photographed lichens so close to the lens, they almost touched it. Magic! The new lens really is versatile and delivers at all optical lengths.
My one gripe is with the pop-up flash. At the moment the results are very dark and under-exposed, but I am working on the problem.
The worst thing you could do with this camera is buy it, take it out of its box and take it on holiday straight away. You would take good pictures, no doubt: learn to use the camera first and you will take great ones!
Great camera but accesories expensive.......2004-12-22
I've had the camera a short while and it has fulfilled all expectations a wonderful bit of kit. The only irritation so far was when I tried to buy a simple skylight filter to protect the lens from scratches. These usually cost a tenner but the screw thread on the 8800 lens is unique to Nikon - and the Nikon equivalent filter is three times the normal price. I presume the same will apply to other accessories (polarising filter, lens hood....).
