Turn off the flash.......2007-12-13
I agree with everything M Fribbens says EXCEPT ... the comment about needing to wait for the flash to charge in daylight. If you turn the flash off - easy to do using the keypad on the back - then there's no wait. And I'd highly recommend turning it off in low-light conditions for some great long-exposure shots. You have to find somewhere stable to mount it, if you don't have a tripod, or have very steady hands, but provided you do this you can get some great night-time cityscapes and atmospheric indoor shots. All in all a great little camera!
Faulty........2007-09-18
I purchased this camera, and it arived this morning. I opened the package and put new AA batteries in the battery hole, the right way up. I turned on the "On" button, but nothing happened. I waited. I held it down, and waited. Nothing. I turned the batteries in every other position, switched them around - still nothing.
I tried other button sequences, but nothing worked. I changed type of batteries and put new duracell batteries in (which I've always found work best). The camera turned on briefly to tell me the batteries were depleated. So I'm forced to conclude the product is faulty. It also didn't come with any instructions - although I'm sure I wouldn't have had any trouble if it had worked for more than 3 seconds.
I did, for the record, buy this from a 3rd party. However, they are a respectable one with good reviews. Although it was second hand it's condition was classified as "Like New". I think it more likely a fault of the manufacturer.
If I may offer my opinion, I think if you want a digital camera, don't get one that needs normal batteries - It's too much hassle. In the long run, you save money if you buy a camera with a rechargable Lithium battery. You certenly save time, effort and needless stress.
Think before you buy this product !.......2007-02-28
Nice compact camera, straightforward and easy to use - and the pictures are good. However the one MAJOR problem is it uses batteries like theres no tomorrow so you have to keep a constant supply with you. Very Disappointing...
Great Little Camera.......2006-05-31
This is a great camera for simple, home use. Pictures in daylight are great and the whole process of taking the pictures, editing and getting them on to your PC is very straightforward. The big screen is an improvement on the little screens of other cameras. Start-up time is quick but you have to wait for the flash to charge even if using in daylight. It is light and easy.
The main drawbacks are the flash which is not good for anything except close up work. Anything over a couple of metres disappears into the dark. Also, although the screen is large and clear, on a sunny day it would be better to have an old-fashioned viewfinder to see the subject otherwise it is "point and guess". Finally the programme wheel on the top is very sensitive. Just this weekend I came home with 30 photos and 5 videos because the wheel moved when I put the camera in my pocket and I didn't realise until after I had taken the videos in error. Minor niggles but overall a "great little camera".

Good for as long as the battery lasts...(thereafter you better look for a new mp3 player...).......2007-08-04
I bought the 30Gb XL5 version ("L" standing for long-capacity battery) early 2006. Plus: Great sound, lots of audio settings, solid appearance and enough battery life for a flight to Australia in a single charge.
Minus: not the user-friendliest controls in the market. Cowon support and firmware updates have been erratic. video/pic features are not great either. Also, an annoying adaptor piece (a "subpack") is required to connect the player to a pc or the charger. do not lose it!
last and most important: 18 months later - and despite a very very careful use - the built-in battery is almost dead and the player of little use other than a USB storage device.
now looking for a new mp3 player.
Not that bad........2007-05-25
For your money you get an MP3 player, a photo viewer and a streaming video player.
First the MP3 player: Out of the many out there that i have heard, this peice of kit easily produces the best sound quality, even out of cheap headphones. You can change the setting aswell on the player, very easily to give you the best sound out of your music.
Photo viewer: To be honest i never really used these, but i do know they work. I have never really seen the point of having photos on an MP3 player, but if thats what you like then you will be happy. Apple got away with it on their iPods, so give this a chance.
Streaming video player: Although the frame rate is limited it does play videos if they are converted to AVI. I downloaded converter off the internet as the software you get with it is pretty awful. But once you have it working its great.
I have given the player 4 stars because it is very fiddly and can be greatly annoying at times. But for all i have described with a colour screen, the price isnt over the top.
My opinion though would be to avoid this if you are looking for simplicity and get an iPod,
thanks for reading.
Cowon.......2006-09-15
I had an M3 which I got at the end of 2004. At the end of 2005 it went wrong. I contacted AdvancedMP3 who I bought it from (always excellent) and they advised that Cowon's returns agent in the UK was Global Office Solutions in Bradford. After some persuasion they accepted that it was down to them to accept it for repair. That was in April. Haven't seen it since. Global are now in the hands of the administrators (KPMG), Cowon don't have phone numbers and won't answer emails. Advanced have tried to help but Cowon don't respond to them either. I've tried, I really have, but Cowon really just don't care. Don't buy one. Things go wrong with everything and the support in the UK really doesn't exist.
