An average camera........2006-03-20

This camera has its ups and downs...

Although the widescreen is great, it is more likely to break than other cameras. Therefore it is advisable to buy a case for it. The official L55 case costs about 20 pounds so i would avoid it.

Its macro is very good for an unproffesional digital camera, and the zoom is good too. However, i was hoping there would be a burst mode. You can take maximum 4 photos in succession and the delay between is unchangeable.

The internal memory is reasonable (about 40 wallpaper sized images). The effects are limited so its best just to use photoshop afterwards. If that is not an option for you then this camera is not great for art photography.
As a camera for general use it is good because it turns on quickly, and flash is easily adjustible.

BUY THIS CAMERA IF you want a simple digital camera for personal use.

DO NOT BUY THIS CAMERA if you want perfect quality pictures, and take photography very seriously.

Good lens - Poor Pictures.......2006-03-14

Unless you are truly desperate for the wideangle lens then this camera is best avoided.

The pictures, even at Best Quality & Highest Resolution, are indistinct with low detail and are generally 'muddy'. Edges of items in the picture are jaggy rather than smooth.

Indoors in normal room lighting, the camera would usually be unable to autofocus (there is no manual focus) and it gives a Low Light Warning so it was not possible to take a picture - you can override it to take a pic but it's out of focus so what's the point. If you were at a party or somewhere with subdued lighting then it would be a complete waste of time.

The flash always fires twice (and cannot be altered to a single flash) but unlike normal red eye reduction systems, the two flashes are quite some time apart so people see the first flash and have started to move and look away by the time the second flash fires, which is when the picture is taken.

The menu structure for setting options is complex and awkward to use. It has a very fragile charging connector which is on the bottom of the camera so you have to lay the camera on either it's front or back with the risk of scratching the body of the LCD screen.

The socket for connecting the camera to a PC is a proprietary non-standard type so you can't use a mini-USB as on so many other cameras.

The image quality on the LCD screen is low resolution and washed out. It's not very bright when outside in sunlight and there is no optical viewfinder to use when the screen is hard to see.

I previously had an 18 month old Canon Ixus 500 and it is so superior in every way except for the wideangle lens that I returned the Samsung for a refund. The Canon is so much better developed and allround easier to use so buy one of the new widescreen, though sadly not wideangle, Ixus's instead.

Overall this camera has not been well thought out or developed at all and it gives the impression of a rushed first attempt to develop a camera yet Samsung have been making cameras for some time so I don't know why they have produced such a poor quality device like this.
