Useful, innovative and good quality.......2007-12-24
After recently getting a car, I looked into the best way for getting my iPod tunes through the speakers. At £9 and with favourable reviews I ordered this to see if it was up to the task - and it certainly is.
Set up is simple, and is literally plug in to the iPod's dock connector, select a frequency and go, with no batteries needed as the iTrip is powered by the pod itself. Although a quick read of the quickstart guide is needed to figure out how, its easy to switch between mono with a stronger signal, and stereo with a less reliable one, however I've noticed little difference in quality between the two. In terms of quality, the sound is more than acceptable, being on a par or slightly above a normal FM radio signal - the bitrate of the song also has some effect on this. Range appears to be variable, and influenced by the objects around the transmitter, however when using with a radio indoors with some doorways in between the device worked even at +8 metres, which is more than acceptable for a car.
There are a few downsides, as other reviewers have mentioned, a frequency that is completely static is needed, which can be a minor inconvenience to find if your radio tuner doesn't like tuning to stations without a signal. This is easily solved however, by using a frequency in between two functional stations, setting the iTrip to that, and then searching for the frequency on the tuner. Another downside is that when driving a frequency can be unused in one place and used in another, cutting into your music - this hasn't happened to me yet but is potentially annoying. Also, the transmitter in some cases seems to be picky about being touched, and the signal can start crackling if the transmitter is left in certain positions: but most of the time this hasn't been a big problem. Finally, changing the volume on the iPod itself has no effect on the sound output, which can be seen as a good or bad thing, though when using around the house this has turned out to be an annoyance.
Despite some very minor niggles, the iTrip is excellent on the whole, and is a very cheap and effective way of getting your iPod music played through the car or speakers at home. As long as you're not bothered about top audio quality in a huge way, and would rather not drill a hole for an aux input in your car, then its well worth the money.
Incredibly durable bit of kit!!.......2007-12-09
This little bit of kit is as tough as they come, forget the Toyota Landcruiser from Top Gear my one of this has survived 6 months of abuse, a drop from about 4 feet from which it required major reconstruction and it has just been though at least 3 30 degree centigrade washing cycles in my washing machine as well as a rinse cycle!! Sure it may no longer sound as good as it used to but it is incredibly clean and I am absolutely amazed it still works at all!!
Much improved on the original i -trip.......2007-12-01
My old i-trip stopped working through overuse. This is much better. Much more flexible as you can now tune it to the frequency you want. A great price. Similar items available in the shops are retailing at £20 +
Not great, Not awful... just bearable.......2007-11-23
well, having bought a crappy noname FM transmitter from ebay for about £6 18months ago, then about 5 weeks ago i was given a £20 one from Comet and now i have just tried this Itrip by griffin.
The Ebay one from the far east was terrible, loads of interference and it stopped working shortly after purchase.
The Itrip by Griffin is ok, pretty poor compared to the comet one i have been using for the last month. It seems to drain your ipod battery pretty quick too, Looks nice, transmits ok and uses the Dock connector.. the hiss will always be there.. if like me, you need a temp solution to get your ipod working in a hire car or something along those lines, its a cheap answer.
The Comet one (still on sale for £19.99) is the best of the three i have tested, eats 2 AAA batteries about every 3days, hisses in and out like the rest, but when it locks on to a station it transmits a clearer sound.. although still like a poorly tuned radio.
All in all, FM transmitters are pretty rubbish at what they do, i am using mine as a last resort as my new car does not have a tape deck, (tape adpater is 100% better than these things) i will be contacting VW to get somekind of Aux in adapter for the stereo.
For £6 though.. its a bargain
