Fantastic Camera, especially for Holidays.......2007-12-10
I have owned one of these cameras for over two years, and it has been faultless. I am really happy with it. In fact it is the best camera I have owned so far.
Great photo quality in any conditions, and a very compact design so it will fit in your pocket. It also has an advanced screen which can be viewed in even the brightest sunlight without reflection, therefore the lack of a viewfinder is not a problem, and is a necessity in order to make the camera so small.
This makes it a perfect camera for holidays, where you want to have a camera you can take anywhere with you. It will fit in your pocket to take on an evening out, or day trip.
There are cameras out there with higher resolution now, but I doubt many of them can compete with the flexibilty and versatility this offers.
DSC-L1.......2006-09-21
I've had one of theses for a couple of years now & the results are excellent. Contrast & tones are well produced & the camera is small & very easy to use. Movie mode is sufficiently good to use in conjunction with regular digital video images when making DVD of events such as holidays although they can be a touch jerky. Beware that it is capable of producing images of a different frame speeds which may not be compatible with your camcorder so check speeds before use. Battery life too is good for several days normal work with the advantage that the camera uses a standard type mobile phone battery which gives the opportunity to have one on charge while using the other, which I never found the need to do as it will charge up OK overnight. Only major drawback is the lack of an optical viewfinder as the screen does suffer from loss of definition in bright light conditions if it cannot be shaded.
A compact camera, with some good features........2005-03-15
The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-L1 is a decent camera for those who value size over features and photo quality. The L1 is ultra-compact and stylish, and it comes in four colors. While it's easy to hold, some of the controls are microscopic. The LCD is small as well, but it's viewable in both in bright outdoor light and dark rooms. Be warned that there is no optical viewfinder on this camera. Something else you won't find: manual controls. Photo quality is just okay, with details appearing soft and muddy, with vignetting (dark corners) popping up occasionally as well. Colors and exposure were good, however, and purple fringing was not a problem. The L1 offers a VGA movie mode that can keep recording until your memory card is full. Camera performance is very good in all areas, and battery life is above average as well.
Some other negatives include the lack of a macro mode (though you can still get as close as 12 cm in normal shooting modes), a weak flash, redeye, and the lack of a video out port.
If you want a camera that you can take anywhere, and don't plan on making large prints, I do recommend the DSC-L1. If you want more control over your camera's settings, better photo quality, or expandability, you'll probably have to buy a larger camera.
