Small, useful and cheap although should be standard.......2007-08-10

The travel kit provides three functions:

- dc charging via supplied charger allowing your Archos to be charged directly from the mains (eu and uk plugs supplied)
- connect other USB mass storage devices such as a digital camera to transfer files
- connect the Archos to your PC using a standard mini USB cable (can also charge this way, same as with the original proprietary usb cable)

The travel kit basically does exactly as it says, the dock itself is relatively small with a charger port, mini USB port and full USB port for the three purposes listed above. When connected directly to the mains the Archos will charge faster than over USB. To be clear though, this kit has no video capability which is handled by the other two docks.

I've had no problems using this dock at all, I have the Archos 504 160GB which has been invaluable when recently on holiday as not only did it cover my music and video needs but I was also able to connect my Olympus SLRs to the Archos and backup the pictures from the CF cards daily.

My main grip with this dock is that this functionality should really have been built into the Archos or at least this kit bundled with it. Many people don't like the USB only charging options which many mp3 players now use and the standard mini USB and USB host are extremely useful features. With the larger 50 pound dock I can understand Archos keeping it separate as it's more pricey and not everyone needs to do recording. However I can't complain about the price of this travel dock, for 20 pounds it brings a lot of useful functionality for not much money.

Bearing that in mind I think the product deserves 5 stars, it's compact for travelling, improves the functionality and at a far more reasonable price compared to what some other companies are wanting for mp3 player accessories. If you're going to be travelling without a PC and looking for a solution to back up pictures from your camera or similar to your Archos x04 series this is highly recommended.

Personally I'm finding it very handy that my Archos can finally share the mini usb cables that most of my devices use plus it's a lot more convenient being able to plug it into the mains rather than find my usb to mains adapter or a suitable device with usb port. The USB host capability is the most of useful of all, not only can I copy with the files across but with the Archos I can check that they have all transferred properly.

to charge archos 404.......2007-07-05

well packaged multi contenient adapter to suit my 404 bought at currys at 128 gbp, pricy for a charger u can charge from pc with usb lead supplied with archos 404 but u cannot use usb to transfer direct from dig camera.
i emailed archos with a few gripes but no answer u will have to buy optional plug in software to use video, 19 euro at time. i bought the adapter but as yet untested with my fuji or pentax dig camera.

unit nice compact heavy 30gb storage great for me but xtra high costs
crapcheck out your use against other units and wigh up additional costs

life revolves around compramise.

You can have a 20gb iPod and get 1000s of songs on it but you will experience terrible sound and poor apple quality

on the other hand you can have a sony hi-md player. Because it is a sony product it will last until eternity and a day. The sound is 10 times (really) better than any mp3 player even with £100 headphones.

Mini disk players can also record from line in which i find useful for recording from the radio of a movie soundtrack.

Hi-md can do this but they can also sync with a computer using sony's sonic stage ( i use 3.4 but it comes with 3.0 ).

Hi-Md s can also store data and connect to a computer through a usb type b to a cable and is recognised as a portable flash drive. no software needed.

Overall

Another great quality sony player that has more than one use. But it excells at all of them.

I bought this a few days ago , this is a quick review.

BUILD QUALITY/LOOKS

Very nice for the price (i payed £80) , i think it looks better than any other low range minidisc sony have released. The front is shiny , it feels a bit like the surface of my DNE10. The back is black also and is matt finish. The silver disc on the front may or may not be metal , you cant really tell but it does feel colder than the rest of the unit. The buttons and jog dial are also high quality and the joystick is the same as my NH900.
It feels solid and there is NO movement when the door is shut (my nh900 moves a bit)
The screen is very clear even in sunlight , much better than my nh900 which is unreadable in most conditions.

SOFTWARE

Sonicstage 3.2 is what i use, this ships with 3.0. I am sure you are all familiar with it.

SOUND QUALITY

This unit does not appear to have a digital amp (no icon on back of player or mention in manual). I have read a lot about MP3 playback being crippled on these players. I have found no issue with MP3 playback, 256 MP3 compared with Hi-SP sounded very similar, hard to tell apart.
I tested 132 atrac3 vs 128 MP3 and did notice that Atrac had slightly more treble but nothing to worry about.
I would say that if you want MP3 playback this unit is very good, i compared MP3 playback with my DNE10 and the difference is not in detail , there is nothing missing with MP3 on the RH710 it just sounds like it has more bass.
Now i hacked the unit and got the full equalizer (no real volume increase however) i then put 4khz up 1 notch and 10khz up 2 and could not tell the difference between this and my DNE10!.

I use PX200 and HJE50s.

BATTERY LIFE

I left it running overnight on repeat with a AA in it playing MP3s at 128-192and got to 17hrs and still had a bar left with no flashing , so ii guess 19 hours is about right.

RECORDING
Usual features , recorded White Stripes DVD optically with no issues at all.

OVERALL

I recommend highly, i got it at a good price but anything under £100 is a fair price imho.
