It takes two hands to hold Sony's new DSC-F717 digital camera, but that's because there are so many features packed into it. The F717 captures images at up to 5.2 megapixel resolution--that's 2,560 x 1,920 pixels--and can facilitate good sized enlargement prints.
Images produced by the camera are crisp, colourful, and deep in detail. With USB 2.0 support, transfers to PC zip by and can be set to happen automatically. The large auto-focus Carl Zeiss lens zooms optically at 5x, with another 2x in digital mode. Atop the lens, the automatic flash pops open when needed. It also performs pre-flash metering and corrects the amount of light sent to create shots with the best exposure possible. This aids the NightFraming mode, which incorporates the camera's NightShot infrared technology; this can help with taking optimal shots in low-light/no-light situations. If you've never used an infrared viewer before, you'll be impressed by the additional photo opportunities it provides.
NightShot can also be used with the camera's movie-capturing mode. The audiovisual movies can be played back full screen with the HQX mode. In tests the movies played back at 1,280 x 1,024 with only minor pixelation around the edges. Video size is limited only by the capacity of the Sony Memory Stick inside the camera. The F717 ships with a 32 MB stick, so an upgrade to a larger size would be recommended. It comes with a shoulder strap, but we also recommend buying a case to protect your investment. Not a camera for beginners, the F717 does everything you'd expect from a high-end digital camera. --J. Curtis

Perfect for the computer games artist.......2004-02-16
I am a semi professional digital photographer. Although my experience in digital cameras is not terribly great, yet, I needed something which would give me a lot possibilities as my abilities grew.
Working with computer games development I need this camera to take high resolution shots for textures, as well as provide me with movie clips for rotoscoping when animating.
I absolutely love this camera. I keep finding new and useful features, and I imagine that will continue for quite a while. The battery is almost impossible to run down, so it is perfect for gathering reference materials on longer outings. The lens is top notch and gives you picture quality second to none in this price range.
Five stars from me for a product without any things to really bother you.
A Second Look.......2003-10-06
I reviewed this camera shortly after I started using it. I thought that a few words some months down the line would be useful. Hope so: here goes.
I now find that, for travel photography, I use the Sony and not any of my 35mm film gear. It is unobtrusive, very quick to handle and use and with that superb quality lens, the results can look as good as a fine-grain emulsion film. You can't get the same enlargement as you could from film, but up to A4 the results are wholly acceptable.
Niggles? Well, the aperture priority feature is of limited value, since it only runs from full aperture to around f6-not much scope for controlling depth of field. Then the memory Stick format is a rather bigger issue. I want to download from the MS to something more portable than a laptop, but which will give me the felxibility of viewing and sorting on the device. Of the gadgets available, only 1 [expensive] will take an MS without buying an adaptor. I note from the photo press that a new 8mp model is due out in November, with compact flash as well as ms slots.
Those are the only two problems I've had. The camera has been round the world with me this year, and is setting off again for New Zealand in a couple of weeks time. I know that I'll bottle out and take a film slr along too, but I really won't need it.
This is a truly good bit of kit. Just remember, you cannot compare BIG enlargements from digital to those from film.
An instant favourite.......2003-05-15
I must say I was prepared to be disappointed with the initial results from this camera as I have been with cameras in the past although they turned out great after a little practice but this digital camera was fantastic first time. I even liked the results I got in dull rainy weather. The movie mode is far better than I expected even when shown full screen on our wide screen telly!
When viewing a test picture of my wife on the PC, I found I could even see the pores on her face! The macro mode is great too. I just love the camera to bits.
It easily deserves its five star rating.
seriously stoked.......2003-04-20
I have had my f717 for 3 days now and am seriously stoked!
I have used it to take pics of boarders and jumping, and once I'd got the hang of half holding the shutter (so it works out the focus and settings) I have been able to take some serious action shots. It has coped with some difficult lighting and movement. The moving lens and huge telephoto means I can get some candid shots of people, no posing and genuine expressions!
I would recommend this to anyone.It takes 7 mins to up load a full 128MB memory stick to the vaio laptop, no wires!
This isn't a tecchies' review, but hey, they read all the mags anyway so don't need one. As a user, its great, and it looks seriously cool too!

A reliable brand and a cheap price.......2007-11-01
I used to use other brands and had some problems with them due slow reading or skipping so now i've stopped and i just buy this brand now.
I found this brand very reliable and always stick with them now-a-days. I use them to create home made DVD's of my holiday pictures, backing up movies on my DVD recorder and have had absolutely no problems with them what so ever. This 100 pack equates to about 20p per disc. I find it's better to buy in bulk when you know what you're expecting as you end up saving money in the long run.
