JVC GR-DF470.......2006-02-05
Firstly let me say that Amazon does this at an extremely good price, I was delighted with the speed of delivery and the packing of what is a delicate instrument. It is beautifully dinky with all the control at your fingertips. It easily slips into your pocket. Some of the buttons need pencil sharp fingers but you can’t have a small compact camera with large controls. I have only owned it a week and the weather here has been gloomy therefore all my test shots have been indoors and in poor light, the results even so have been excellent.
Many of the customer reviews that I have read for various video cameras have said that it is imperative that you use a firewire connection. When using a USB connection my attempts to capture a movie clip were poor, it was like I had recorded in fast-forward. A firewire cable cured this. Before I purchased I found it difficult to find the format that these cameras turned out, well on the GR-DF470 the default is AVI but you can have MPEG 1 and 2 also many other formats. AVI requires a lot of space but MPEGs as you would expect are much compressed, my eyes cannot tell the difference.
A word must be said for Power Director 3, which is the editing/capture/burning software that is bundled with the camera. It is excellent and will enable you, quite simply, to make movies that will blow your friends minds. One of the big problems with video in the past has been that you had to shoot the scenes in a logical order. With Power Director 3 you can easily split and arrange the files in any order you wish. A part of the capture software has a useful fine movement adjustment; this doesn’t work using USB, more reasons for a firewire cable. So much software that arrives with computer peripherals is either useless or only just adequately basic, this is really good and allows you acres of creativity.
Having this software renders a lot of the camera bells and whistles unnecessary. Fading in and out for example is much better done during final editing in Power Director where if it is wrong it can be altered. I very much like the video insert feature in the camera this is very good when you don’t want to interrupt the continuity of sound but wish to insert say some close-ups. Although I love the feature I would have much preferred to do it in the more controlled atmosphere at home but sadly it seems to be beyond Power Director. Other minor criticisms are that the camera doesn’t come with a MiniDV tape, or much more importantly a firewire cable.
I have for some time said, rather tongue in cheek, that all people who bought video camera should be made to seek some tuition, such was the awfulness of their results. With cameras of this quality and software that puts you in the directors chair there is now no excuses.
Good product, shame about JVC customer service!.......2005-11-08
With a normal life span of 24 months for camcorders, you would have thought that JVC would do its utmost to satisfy existing customers and encourage repeat purchases. Unfortunatelly, this concept is totally lost on them.
I purchased a spare battery for my new camcorder via the JVC e-shop (unfortunatelly Amazon do not stock accessories). Once received, the battery was not up to our expectations and we decided to exchange it for another size. It took 4 telephone conversations to be pertinently informed that returns had to be booked through the e-shop for refund. We logged our request...6 weeks ago and to date have had no contact from JVC about collection and, of course, no refund.
One last telephone call to complain about the situation and I was again pertinently informed that 'that's the kind of company we are'.
Well that kind of company will not get my next camcorder purchase!
Fantastic First Camera!.......2005-09-15
Having read a few magazine reviews and browsed some manufacturer web sites, I settled on this model as a good all-rounder, not bottom end and not too pricey or complicated.
I have found it produces great results for my needs. The features for the money are great. DV In and Out is particularly good in this price bracket, full manual control of everything and a nifty battery data system that shows remaining power. You can also switch off the LCD and use the viewfinder to conserve battery power. Program modes include night scope, shutter speeds from 1/50 to 1/4000, sports, snow, spotlight, twilight, sepia, B&W, classic film flicker, strobe, mirror and 5S mode for stop frame animation or time lapse.
I tend to use Auto mode almost all of the time and the image is fine. There's the occasional white balance error but it quickly corrects itself. Shooting outdoors gets particularly bright and rich colours, even in cloudy conditions.
Takes stills on a supplied memory card, also has some clever sounding Biphonic sound system, which I haven't tried yet (two extra mics supplied on something that looks like a pair of headphones. You wear them when recording and the tape records a triangle of sound from the built-in mic and the earpiece mics, which is supposed to simulate surround sound).
I was amazed at how small and light the camera was when it arrived, it's great to handle. The mic picks up slight tape mechanism noise during quiet spells, but nothing annoying. All in all, I've been delighted with the results - it's been a great introduction to digital video. Perfect for grab out of the bag and point and shoot, getting great results (but the Tamrac 5696 bag Amazon recommend for this model is just a little small for my needs - it's tight with the camera, AC adapter and a couple of tapes in).
As a companion, I'd also recommend Tom Ang's 'Digital Video Handbook' and Adobe Premiere Elements for editing.

Works Well but my photos are not widescreen.......2008-01-14
I bought this for my father and it works well, it auto starts without having to press any buttons and the pictures look good.
Pity it does not connect via USB, I had to load up the SD memory card via my camera but thats not a big problem.
Two main negative points; the screen is like 16:9 widescreen and so even though it is 7", it is quite narrow so standard photos don't fit well. Portrait photos are limited in size by the low height of the screen, and landscape photos don't fill out the full width of the screen, so in future I will look for a more square screen format. The other point; there is no random mode so each time it is switched on, the photos display in the same order. Otherwise, I am well pleased and feel it is good value for money.
I was not as impressed.......2007-12-26
I agree with the other posters that this frame looked great out of the box. But mine would not interface with the memory stick unless connected through the extension cable. And the stand seemed to be missing a part and does not work at all. It seems that the screw is much smaller than the hole it is intended in going to. The frame is not much use laying on my desk.
A nice product - The AMT 7" Alloy Black satisfies........2007-12-21
I spent some time looking at various photoframes at the usual high street outlets. I didn't want to overspend. I bought the ATMT 7" Alloy Black after reading the previous review. I am very pleased with the product. Especially so as I bought the frame as a Christmas gift for my father who is a little picky and difficult to choose for. The Black Alloy finish of the surround is nice, looking even better in real life than in the product photo.
It will look great in my fathers home.
Great Christmas Present! .......2007-12-15
I got this frame as the ALLOY part of the product appealed to me, compared to the usual "Plastic" frame you get out there this is amazing. It makes a difference as it feels heavier and of a better build. Also this looks different to the millions of others available in the stores at the moment. Works brililantlly, manual could have been better, but on the whole easy to use and operate! Great buy, Great Xmas present!

Disappointing.......2008-01-03
My son-in-lw bought 3 of this item December 06 - all of which have gone wrong. Currently we are trying to sort out our problem - but the company are ignoring our e-mail. Will up-date review if and when we get a satisfactory result. Jan 2008
A Great Way To Modernise Your Home/Room.......2007-07-16
I've had this product almost a year now and it's still going strong. I've given it days of use. The menu is very simple to use, easy to navigate and configure. The device accepts almost any USB storage device and a range of flash memory cards. The quality is very good and I was in no way dissapointed.
The only one issue I have with this frame is that when using a Sony Memory stick it pretrudes out of the bottom of the frame. This not only slightly spoils the look but it means it no longer stands up straight horizontally, although I have mine wall mounted so it's of no concern. But as a recommendation use SD Cards, they look tidier and they don't obstruct the frame.
Cheap but VERY cheerful..........2007-05-31
OK, we got the ATMT Photo Frame yesterday 2 days after ordering - great start & great service! With some of the reviews we were a little reserved in our anticipation, however, that was soon put to rest. Apart from the the almost useless instruction leaflet and the 'not-so-intuitive' menu operation (trial and error is the best way of getting the hang of that), it is a great little product.
Yes, you do have to reformat to 16:9 if you want full screen images, but with 'Image Cropper' (as suggested by another kind reviewer),it's a doddle. I had over 125 photos prep'd and saved to file ready for use within an hour of opening the box (the batch processing in Image Cropper is terrific)! Save your pics to two seperate files, one for portrait (upright) shots and one for landscape (normal) shots. Then in the menu you can choose which file to run. When you run portrait shots, just turn the frame on it's side, otherwise you'll be seeing sideways photos!
The colour issues some users have mentioned certainly don't seem to be a problem if you either pre-edit your photos for optimum clarity or use the colour, brightness functions in the ATMT menu itself. Lets face it, digital photos taken straight from the camera are rarely optimized for viewing, so you'd probably do this anyway!
We still need to run the unit for a while to test out the reliability issues some have reported, but for the money we are all VERY pleased with the results and will most likely be buying a couple more for Xmas presents next year.
Not waht was expected.......2007-05-29
I bought this as a present for my wife so she could show her long-stored photos to friends. First, it didn't take her XD card - it took everything else. When I finally transferred some files to another type of card, they came out with poor colour reproduction, and images were squashed flat and wide. The instructions were very poor, too. Not recommended!
Cheap and Very Cheerful!.......2007-05-22
I bought this frame after reading some reviews, like anything in life nothing is 100% compatible. But the frame certainly does what it says on the tin! Worth every penny! Great present and a great buy!
