I bought this after my Pure Elan for the kitchen decided to give up the ghost. I have only used it on mains so cannot verify poor battery life etc like in the other reviews but I can't fault it. Managed to get it cheaper than the price on Amazon in the Jan sales. The sound quality is better than the Pure but the biggest benefit with this is a stronger tuner. I live in an area with a weak DAB signal but this picks up all the channels without any distortion like I used to get on the Pure. This is so much more compact than the Pure I had preconceived ideas that the sound quality would be tinny and weak but it is actually really good. All in all a very good product and build quality is up to the normal excellent Sony standards.
Grreat little radio.......2007-11-15
This was my first non UK designed DAB radio having previously stuck to Pure and Roberts. I bought it for travelling. It's a great performer, well built (Pure please take note) and sounds great. Battery life is as good as any DAB. Anyone who has had problems (see previous review) should invest in some decent rechargeable batteries. Use Ni-Mh cells not ordinary rechargeables and nothing under 2500 mAh. Only fault is NO FM which is a pain if you are on holiday in an area with no DAB signal as has happened to me twice!
Poor battery life.......2007-10-11
Only problem is can't get my rechargeable batteries to last longer than 1 hour which makes the portability aspect fairly useless. Sony in manual says "9 hours". If only it did.
Looks cool, battery life poor and annoying preset button........2007-03-26
It looks cool and its fairly slim. Battery life is poor but I suspect this is a problem with DAB in general, about 8-10hrs from 2700NiMh batteries. One annoying problem is when you press a preset station it then locks the radio into the 3 presets only until you press "tune mode", I cant see a reason for this it just stops you flicking stations after pressing a preset why sony why? Otherwise I am quite pleased certainly much better looking than most horrid DAB radios.
Great radio but poor battery life.......2007-03-18
I bought this DAB radio to use in the bathroom - i.e. running it on batteries rather than the mains. Sony reckons it will do 9 hours on a set of 4 AA batteries, which is probably fair. But using it for around an hour a day, this is only just over a week. The portable Sony FM radio it was to replace could go for several months on one set of batteries. I tried using rechargeable batteries (2500mAh) and they lasted about 3 hours before needing to be charged. I have had to go back to using my old FM radio due to the hassle of having to recharge batteries twice a week or the expense of buying batteries every week or two.
I read reviews of other DAB radios before buying this and I think this is a common problem with DAB rather than specifically this model. If you plan to use a DAB radio on battery power, I'd recommend waiting a few years for the technology to improve and get less power hungry.
In my opinion, the additional sound quality and variety of stations doesn't warrant the hassle of changing the batteries. I bought it mostly for the additional stations, but to be honest found myself going back to Radio 1 after trying out some of the others (too many adverts and dull presenters). The improved sound quality isn't really something that makes a lot of difference in a bathroom anyway.
All that said, it is a great little radio. Sound quality is very good and it is very easy to use. Running on mains power (adaptor supplied) it can't be faulted.
