Mac users beware!.......2008-01-18
As with most 3rd party vendors, little attention is paid to the MAC users on the planet. Whilst setting this printserver up to work with PC's is quite straight forward, the set up routine for the MAC is very basic. The suppplied CD does not work with OSX so you will need to download a guide off the Netgear website and you have to rely on the IP print drivers that MAC have developed. If you want a solution for the MAC then go and buy the Airport Extreme, at least this supports both MAC and PC but you are limited to a single printer.
Despite the gripe regarding MAC's this is a very good piece of kit and worth the money for any PC user who has two printers that they want wireless access to.
Printserver does not support all printer functions.......2007-12-01
If you are interested only in simple printing then the WGPS606 is fine but, not obvious from other reviews or manufacturers information, it will not, for the vast majority of printers, support bi-directional functions such as ink tank status reporting or duplex printing. This was a great disappointment and I have had to revert to a direct cable connection.
Good product but with a couple of issues to consider.......2007-11-05
I have had this print server installed for a couple of days now and it seems very good. My printer isn't on the compatible list (which is quite limited) but it has behaved pretty well.
Other reviews have mentioned the necessity to load the printer drivers for the attached printer(s) on to each PC that will be using the server. This is can be a nuisance if your printer driver isn't included with your version of windows, you may need to physically connect the printer to each PC in turn. But fortunately this is a one off task (until you buy a new printer).
One problem I have is that because the network hub, wireless bridge and print server are all on one device if you have a problem with the printer it can lock up your network. This means that you can't log onto the server to see what the problem is, you have to reboot everything to get access to the network again. I think in future I would buy a separate print server to get around this issue, but of course that is a more expensive option.
The only other thing is a marketing issue; I don't think Netgear make it clear enough that this is a wireless bridge, not an access point. If you think that you are going to print wirelessly from your laptop directly to the server, think again.
Your laptop needs to be in range of a wireless access point, probably the one on your router, the server does not act as an access point.
This device lets you extend your wired network but it doesn't extend your wireless network, you can't access the server directly via Wifi.
Overall a very good product for the price.
Brillaint Piece Of Kit.......2007-09-08
After reading a couple of positive reviews about this product, I decided to purchase it, and I'm glad I did! The print server arrived 2 days after ordering thanks to amazons great QOS and I was able to set it up in about 30 minutes using the setup wizard (which you can download off the netgear site).
I can now print wirelessly from my Epson printer usng both my computer and wireless laptop. I've also been able to remove the horrible 20m cable from my WPN824 router (downstairs)to my xbox 360(upstairs)and can receive wireless internet with no problems at all!
The ONLY problem I've encountered with the print server is that it does not support scanning which was a bit annoying.
Remember if you are considering purchasing this print server, make sure your printer IS compatible with it by using the list provided on the netgear website to avoid any frustration.
Excellent piece of kit with one small flaw.......2007-07-20
I bought one of these so that the family PC wasn't tied to the same location as my ADSL hub, and to allow me to have the printer alongside but usable separately. This device is simple to set up. Adding a printer was also simple. And it is left on 24x7. I have only two observations having used it for about two years now.
First, it occasionally gets 'confused' and loses network connectivity. Powering down and back up clears this. I need to update the firmware to see if this is fixed.
Second, I regularly print CDs on the printer and the large slow transfer doesn't work. The print times out, ruining the CD. So I now simply plug the printer into the home PC and print direct from there. Annoying but not the end of the world.
That said this device is pretty much 'plug in and forget' which is exactly how it should be.
