You wouldn't think it to look at, but The Sony DAV-S500 Home Cinema System is a complete system in one, combining DVD player, surround sound system and hi-fi, plus some extra tricks. All this is squeezed into one modest silver box, a modern music centre. It'll play just about any optical disc you have including multi-channel SACD (Super Audio CD) and CD-RW. With tuner and amplifier also built into the system, this really does provide the lot. The speakers consist of five small cubes and one big box, the bass unit. The little speakers are certainly stylish but a lot is asked of them, especially when driving your music needs.

Plug the main box into your television and you've a complete audio-visual entertainment system, radio and all. The picture quality is up to Sony's usual fine standard, the colour purity is patchy in places, but otherwise it's stable and crisp. There's no zoom or other fancy playback features, although few people use such trickery after the first week or two anyway. There is no SCART output, which is a disappointing omission, it's composite or S-VHS instead. Sound purists will complain that the tonal purity has been sacrificed a little to get a full sound from the modest speakers. The bass and mid ranges are a touch overly boosted. This does enable it to fill a room well, despite modest power. The front speaker channels are rated at 40 W, but it didn't feel like there was that much power available.

Buying a music centre generally means you compromise in places and you can't upgrade any aspect of the system, something to bear in mind before you start. Where they score heavily is value for money. Just trying adding up what a comparable quality system would cost you in separates and you soon see why the DAV-S500 is such an attractive proposition. It does each job well and it makes for a clean and stylish installation, ideal if you don't want a mass of boxes and connectors and a small heap of remote controls. Ive used this home cinema for about three years. The perfomance is absolutely unbeleavable for this DVD in a box!! Easy to setupand just fits in your crib. Great value for money.

Okay.......2004-09-19

I used to be a big fan of Sony but I think they are losing the plot a little. This is a fine system, don't get me wrong BUT
a) What were they thinking with that remote...it is way too fiddly and has to be pointed directly in front of the system..
b) There are not nearly enough SACDs available...the previous reviewer is correct, why isn't their whole back catalogue on SACD? With new formats, sony do not seem to have a clue...look at their lack of support of mp3 in their portable players and their persistant yet pointless persistance in pushing ATRAC...
c) This system is let down by the sound of mp3's and CDs. DVDs sound great but thats only half the story.

This is a waste of good money.......2003-01-03

Got this unit for Christmas. Remote control doesn't work properly. Unit only works in "manual" mode which means you have to get up off of the sofa to operate it. I called Sony support @ 1800-222-SONY for technical help and they couldn't even tell me how to operate it. The unit seems to be hung in "manual" mode. When you press the power on button the red light comes on. When you press "open" on the dvd drawer, the red power on light goes off. Sony doesn't have a qualified technical staff to support their expensive products. Also, the dual remote will not operate my 25 inch Sony TV monitor. My suggestion is to buy a different brand besides Sony.

Superb.......2002-05-25

The DAV-S500 is a superb piece of kit from Sony, proving once-again that Sony's affordable electronics dwarf other big makes. Great sound, great picture, great all-round DVD player.
But, like with all things both good and bad, there's a drawback. Even though they're pretty trivial, the Remote is a little on the fiddly side, with semi-important buttons represented by little buttons, featured among unimportant buttons. (Mainly the 'Function' button(i.e. DVD, Video 1, Video 2, Tuner), and 'Mute'.) Also, placing it in a medium/big room would improve the sound, and it could resound more & surround the listener. Having it in a small (i.e. bedroom-sized) room, the sound is a little too direct & (for want of a better word) non-surrounding.
Despite these minor problems, though, this is a great system, and would slot discretely into any (not small) room with ease.

Sony Dav-S500 review.......2002-04-15

I have recently purchased this system and can honestly say that it is 'brilliant' value for money. Action and sci-fi movies are brought to life with impressive sound effects, and even more subtle scores on movies such as the Legend of Vagger Bance are given new persepective with the davs clarity and ability to reveal even the most subtle of nuances. The ability to connect it upto several sources such as the playstation (which sounds excellent!) and sattelite will give hours of audio pleasure ensuring that you'll never be wanting to switch the system off.

Overall an excellant product with which to explore DVD's true potential!
