All the manufacturers promise 270Mbps, thats Mega bits per second. Most LAN cards that have a cable are 100Mbps.

Reading reviews and knowing that the wireless 'n' wasn't a standard I bought a Netgear router and a D-link USB receiver because they had the same components inside which meant they should be compatible.

My test was to play a DVD:-

1) First over a cable connected to the router at 100Mbs. The DVD played perfectly at a rate or 9 Mbps.

2) Over wireless 270Mbps, Netgear to D-link, same chipset. DVD wouldn't play and testing with a single very large file showed the connection was only 7.3 Mbps. And that was the router and device next to each other.

3) In the end I bought a Netgear PCI card the WN113T (the TopDog Marvel chipset) and not WN113B (Broadcom chipset) and managed to get a file connection of 30Mbps. It meant I could play a DVD remotely.

The 270Mbps, is called the 'symbol' speed. After researching it and talking with people that understand what a symbol is in relation to data transmission through the air, it doesn't reflect what the speed you will actually get when you use it.

In my opinion, the 3 stars are for Netgears great interface when it comes to seeting up their equipment (5 stars) but mark down (and all the manufactueres that are making wireless n products are the same) the claims about the speed.

If I said that the Citroen 2 CV had a wheel speed of 280 Miles per hour, you may think WOW!. If I said that was 70 miles per hour for each wheel, you might be a bit confused. If I said the top speed was 70 miles per hour it would make sense.

I think this new wireless n standard and products need to be honest based on my experience.

One recommentation, use the same company for router and receiver and more importantly use the smae chipset from that company.

Hope this saves you the dissapointments I've had with wireless n products from various manufactureres and also Powerline products where you can route yor network over your in house electrical network... very bad.
