Despite the other reviewers review here, my experience with this microphone is far from good. Yes the zoom function works okay- not great, but okay. It's a cheap mic so that gains the Z60 another star, but that's where I stop.

I recently used this mic to record a series of lectures, but because of the cheap lightweight plastic build of the unit, I could never get it to stand on its own built in feet. The unit kept rolling over and what's worse is that because of its design, the casing picks up so much surface noise- which rumbles like mad in the recording, it rendered the final results almost unlistenable. So in the end I had to leave it pointing in the wrong direction. Not good. It's also highly sensitive to moving air, so forget using it outside or by holding it. Sony really should include a pop-shield as well as some sort of built-in anti-vibration cage, but I doubt they will/ do.

So in summary, buy this mic if you are on a strict budget, but beware of its 'design features'. I do not recommend this mic and advise buyers to look elsewhere for a better design.

This microphone provides exceptional clarity and performance when recording lectures/seminars. It is compatible with most minidisk recorders that have a mic input jack. The zoom feature means that even sat at the back of the lecture hall, with all the noise from people between the mic and the lecturer, you can zoom in and focus on the lecturers voice. It really is a must have item for any student, combined with a minidisk recorder, it is the best way to record lectures. The quality and length of time you can record for, make it, in my opinion the best dictaphone combination you can buy for the money. Don't waste money on other dictaphones/voice recorders!!
