I recently bought one of these for a bargain price (500GB for £160, Staples Store - not on website)..

All was good until I actually tried to use the media sharing.

I have 50GB of music and 5GB of pictures in a dedicated share on the device. Firstly, the Itunes server is broken when using reasonable sized libraries. Itunes picks up the device 100% of the time, but click on it, and it'll disappear with no error. It'll work fine with a few tracks on the NAS, but load up your library, and it will not work at all.

Secondly, the hard disk access with media sharing enabled is VERY noisy. I barely heard a noise from the unit while migrating the 80GB of data to the unit, but turn on media sharing, and it's caning the hell out of the disk. It'll continually access the disk like that 24/7 too until you disable it. Because of the problem, I was rather hoping that I would be able to enable/diable the media server as and when i wanted to play music - but re-enabling the server initiates a full media re-scan which can take AGES - not good if you want to flick the unit on, play a few tunes and turn it off again.

Would I buy this again - no, not until they fix the problems, because it's not fit for purpose. Itunes functionality with large libraries is broken. DLNA streaming comes with the caveat of making your living room sound like a data-centre. If you plan to use passworded shares and Vista too, you'll need to download (from buffalo) and install an OS patch to disable NTLM2 as the linkstation live doesnt support it yet.

The saving graces of the unit are that it WILL work with PS 3, and it's fast - 10MB's over 100mb wired is good enough for me. Plus, as long as you dont enable media streaming, it's very quiet too - just like buffalo are if you ask them about the issue.

COME ON BUFFALO - MAKE IT WORK PROPERLY! PLEASE!
