Customer Reviews:
Badly designed.......2007-09-25
I've had 2 pairs of these headphones in the space of three years which tells you a) they provide great sound but sadly are let down by b)incredibly fragile build quality. The good simply outweighs the bad. Twice I have had to bin my phones as they have narrowly lapsed the 12 month warranty but for £60 I expect far better. I have emailed Etymotic to complain and advise they do something about the faults in the design only to receive a brusque and impersonal reply explaining that it was my fault. I took such care with the second paid I owned for fear of breaking them, only to see one of, and shortly after both, headphones die on me.
Etymotic have been terrible in their customer service during these incidents, asking me to pay the postage costs!?! I fully expected them to pay for the return of the faulty product and return new ones but this was obviously to optimistic.
You may see many other reviews below which detail a similar experience. I have been completely underwhelmed by Etymotic product, and worst of all attitude and would strongly advise you not to purchase anything from them. I intend never to purchase from them again. Go and buy something from Shure, Bose or Sennheiser, or Sony all of whim make more sturdy yet no less sophisticated headphones with better warranty and customer service.
They get one star due to the fact for the short period they are good, which is the most frustrating aspect of it.
STAY AWAY FROM THESE IMO.
amazing.. but one recuring problem !!.......2007-09-15
i have found theas headphones to be amazing ! , i was astonded at the diferance between them and my old *cheep* headphones, i use them at work under eardifender whall using machenary , firstly with to methods of sound isolation you carnt actuly hear the machean! which means you can turn the music down alittle and save your ears! the 2nd point is that i oftern get to the end of a job take the eardifenders off , and then remember that i actuly have a pair of headphones in ! i actuly forget that they are stuck in my ears.
as u can tell i love theas headphones but afew months after i got them, problem! the left headphone stoped working! i was devistated i sent an email to etymotic and had to sent them in to them for repair , well afew weeks back i receved a new pair back, was so happy to get them back at last and i mad sure to take care of the jack conection,, but again afew months later they went again ! they are now in the usa with etymotic after afew emails last week to etymotic they recomended that they sent back a pair of there black ER6i's because the jack is in an L shape and i prisume that would hold the wire in better, i would recomend that any one looking at getting theas headphons to get the black ones (that are cheeper at the moment !) and they dont look like u have an i pod, so hopefully less stolen headphons!
i would never consider going back to a pair of plastic "normal" headphons now ! and would obviosly recomend a pair of theas tipe of headphons to any one! . i just hope the black ones dont break this time!
xx
OK but fragile and causes problem with earwax build-up.......2007-06-27
I've owned a pair of the ER-6i earphones for just under a year. On the plus side they sound good with extremely clear treble and mid range (but not great bass) and isolate sound extremely well.
On the downside, I've experienced the same problems as two other reviewers (C Simpson and D Clearwater). I had to replace the first set after 6 months as the left earphone stopped working. This entailed returning them to Etymotic in the USA (costing around £6 in registered post) but was otherwise problem free. The replacement earphones have just developed the same problem, which is a bit irritating given how much they cost. I guess I can expect them to go again in 6 months at which point I will shop around for something a bit more sturdy. I've also experienced the problem with earwax and am about to get one of my ears syringed.
Great, but not as great as I expected.......2007-05-21
Don't get me wrong, these are quality headphones, but it's what you'd expect for £60+. They're not life changing like some people here would suggest, they're just an improvement on ipod earphones - and rightfully so.
It is also important to make sure your music is high quality - 320k at least - otherwise you might as well use ipod earphones - they can only produce great sound with a good quality input, they're not magical.
--------
Ear Tips:
Whilst the foam tips offer superb sound isolation, as well as improved bass, the sound quality just isn't as clear as the flange tips. The tips also look a bit naff in your ears or dangling from your collar.
The flange tips offer superb clarity, as well as looking great. However they fall down on the bass and sound isolation. Although I don't know why people moan about them not producing brilliant bass, if they want big bass, they should buy headphones.
I tend to swap between the two regularly.
I also had initial problems fitting them in my ear, although after a day or two this initial problem soon wore off (you have to squeeze the foam tips then let them expand in your ear).
--------
Also if you have an ipod, fiddle around the EQ settings, as there are certain ones which significantly enhance sound.
great sound (for a while) but two major downsides.......2007-02-19
These do everything they promise: shut out noise and provide great sound. However, one of the wires in mine broke after six months of use, even though I was careful not to wrap them tightly or tie them in knots (hard given how thin they are).
The other problem comes with the way that they work: to get great sound and proper isolation, they have to go quite a way into your ears. This doesn't hurt and is fine. Unfortunately, jamming them in like this day after day can cause earwax to get impacted, meaning drops or syringing are needed to get it out. I discovered this the icky way.
