The cheapest way to buy European maps.......2005-07-03

Who cares about the unit itself. Some brainbox at Garmin decided loyal customers have to pay almost 50% more for the City Select software alone than buying it with yet more hardware you don't want or need. Oh, and you have to import them from the States.

Back to the GPS 18 USB... its small, uses a non-standard output, and is therefore useless unless you only ever want to use Garmins' overpriced software. Nothing else will work with it.

The hoops you have to jump through to register the maps are *unreal* but if you bought one after around May 2005 and got CSv6 in the package, you get a free upgrade to CSv7.

It took me 3 attempts, a phone call to Garmin (who were shut), and a spark of inspiration to actually complete the upgrade to CSv7. Considering I have a qualification in computers and act as an unofficial help-desk in work, I find this incredible.

Because of the installation hassle, it took me around 5 hours to get it set up on my PC. It might have taken me even longer if I didn't have a second PC.

This is worth it for the maps alone - ebay the rest, or buy a product from a company that cares about their customers.
