5 out of 5 stars Best super hero film to date.......2007-02-20

I was really surprised with Hellboy when I first laid eyes on it. It appeared to just be another average, run of the mill action romp. How wrong I was.

The character of Hellboy in itself is just fantastic. A demon turned demon hunter with the macho charisma and unstoppable burliness of a freight train. Hellboy rocks, no argument. The story is very well planned with the past, present and future all clearly depicted. I also find it's a fairly mature film in that along with all the brilliant action you also catch a glimpse of social interaction like how Hellboy is seen as an outcast. 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Hellyes!.......2006-05-09

"Guillermo Del Toro is a force of nature". That's what Perlman said on the Hellboy commentary. I couldn't agree more. His films, although not all perfect, just have a magical feel to them. Cronos and The Devil's Backbone were spellbinding and Blade 2 kicked serious ass. I consider Mimic his only misstep to date but the atmospere was pure Del Toro.

Helloy was not really a mainstream comic but it gathered quite a large fanbase in the end. Bringing Mike Mignola, the creator of Hellboy, along for the ride was the best thing Del Toro could have done. The film is probably as close you can get to the comic as possible, and believe me that's a good thing. It's really hard to imagine anyone else than Ron Perlman in the lead, he just owns the role and dominates the film. As a whole Del Toro manages to pull all the different elements together to create a truly remarkable world of wonder and monsters. It's too bad I already bought the other edition of this movie, but I might just get this one anyway. I recommend reading the comics as well, they are great fun.

5 out of 5 stars Great Comic-book Movie.......2006-01-28

The Hellboy comics are great, so when I heard about a movie, I began to fear a repeat of "League of Extoridnary Gentlemen" which was dire to say the least - but to my surprise it was a great story and a wonderful movie, even if fans of the comics disagree at times on this point.
Ron Perlman is great as hellboy even under all the heavy makeup. Along with a great suporting cast including the legendary John Hurt as the proffessor that found him.
Much to my surprise and delight, much of the movie's special effects are done practially with models, stunts & actual objects. Some of the key creatures are of course CGI as there would be no way to visualise them otherwise - but its done tastefully for once.
The Director's Cut makes alittle more sense and fleshes out some important scenes. The bouns features are interesting and informing, and give you a good idea of just how this movie was made.
The only down point I can make is that the PAL colouring spoils some of the subitle effects that are present in the NTSC version - but I'm a NTSC freak so dont let that put you off getting this otherwise great set, it's well worth the price.

Hellboy [2004]

Amazon.co.uk Review

In the ongoing deluge of comic-book adaptations, Hellboy ranks well above average. Having turned down an offer to helm Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban in favor of bringing Hellboy's origin story to the big screen, the gifted Mexican director Guillermo del Toro compensates for the excesses of Blade II with a moodily effective, consistently entertaining action-packed fantasy, beginning in 1944 when the mad monk Rasputin--in cahoots with occult-buff Hitler and his Nazi thugs--opens a transdimensional portal through which a baby demon emerges, capable of destroying the world with his powers. Instead, the aptly named Hellboy is raised by the benevolent Prof. Bloom, founder of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, whose allied forces enlist the adult Hellboy (Ron Perlman, perfectly cast) to battle evil at every turn. While nursing a melancholy love for the comely firestarter Liz (Selma Blair), Hellboy files his demonic horns ("to fit in," says Bloom) and wreaks havoc on the bad guys. The action is occasionally routine (the movie suffers when compared to the similar X-Men blockbusters), but del Toro and Perlman have honored Mike Mignola's original Dark Horse comics with a lavish and loyal interpretation, retaining the amusing and sympathetic quirks of character that made the comic-book Hellboy a pop-culture original. He's red as a lobster, puffs stogies like Groucho Marx, and fights the good fight with a kind but troubled heart. What's not to like? --Jeff Shannon

3 out of 5 stars Good film, but disappointing........2008-03-03

I was so excited when I heard that they were making a film of Hellboy but when I saw it I was disappointed. Yes there are good bits in it such as the action sequences but for the most part, the film isn't very engaging and I found myself thinking about other things whilst I was watching it, which isn't a good sign.
If you liked the re-make of the Incredible Hulk then this is your type of film.

4 out of 5 stars Quick Reviews!.......2007-12-14

After hearing rave reviews from America, and being a fan of Perlman I knew I had to see this movie. I have never read the comics, but as with comic book movies, they usually explain the basics. Hellboy is an above average comic adventure with some good effects and acting, stands above most other films for having a good script and being more smart than most others, but it is slightly too slow in places.

Ron Perlman stars as the adult Hellboy, a demon which the Nazis brought from some Nether Region as an infant. However, he was rescued and Rasputin-the man in charge of raising him was trapped with his minions for 60 years. Hellboy was given to Prof Broom and he becomes the creatures father. Hellboy grows like a normal human, and becomes part of an elite team of freaks who fight evil. He joins Abe Sapian, an amphibious creature, and Liz a pyrotechnic woman who he falls for. However, she cannot control her powers and is locked away. When Rasputin and his evil forces return, it is up to the team to stop him, taking rookie agent John along. The two form an unlikely duo, and plan to bring down the bad guys once and for all.

Perlman is excellent in the role, creating much of the film's humour. Blair and Pierce are also good in differing roles, Hurt is strong as the Prof, and Evans is OK as John. The action is good in parts, but the effects are very impressive, as is the make-up and sets etc. The story is a little wavy at times and can sometimes detach itself from the audience. However, there are enough exciting moments to keep us happy, and even as a comic book movie it is different and refreshing. Hopefully the sequel will be an improvement.

This 2 disc edition has tonnes of features, from documentaries to comic shorts and other films. This is a worthy purchase for any fan, though if you're a fan of the animated series too, you would be better going for the newly released 3 disc edition. Both are sets which are the way all dvds should be.

2 out of 5 stars Dull.......2007-09-24

There's no faulting Ron Pearlman's performance in this movie. He plays the cigar-chomping Hellboy in an endearing fashion. However, the actual plot is stiff and mundane, leaving you wondering why this film received good reviews when it was released. It's difficult to get worked up about a few stilted fight scenes, the confusingly dull plot, and Rasputin's evil machinations. To be honest, I'm jaded by the glut of superhero adaptations that promise so much but let you down, Particulary when this film was made by Guillermo del Toro, the man behind the fabulous Pan's Labyrinth. My adivce is to buy that.

3 out of 5 stars Mildly entertaining.......2007-09-23

Hellboy could have been one of the classic comic book adaptations, but sadly the film-makers lost their bottle and went for an all out CGI monster showdown.

The opening is pretty good. During WW2 a portal is opened by the Nazis and Hellboy escapes through it to be found and raised by the allies. 60 years later the time has come for Hellboy to serve the other side for the purpose for which he was designed. Quite what that purpose was I never really understood as the plot was somewhat confusing (not that it really mattered).

Sadly although some of the CGI is very good, and there are a number of memorable sequences, there is just too much of it. Once you seen one CGI tentacled monster, another one just becomes a bit of a yawn. Its not without merit though. Ron perlman is a fine actor and delivers his lines with some style and when neccessary with a fine sense of comic timimg.

Its certainly worth watching once, but I would be wary of buying it, as I don't think it will hold up to repeated viewings.

4 out of 5 stars Papal Superhero.......2007-07-23

Never have I heard of Hellboy until I saw this movie, which I enjoyed but which I found rather too scary to let my children watch. What struck me was this: the holy water bullets, the relics, the rosary beads. Has there ever been a more Catholic Super Hero? Benedict XVI is watching this in the Vatican and cheering!

4 out of 5 stars Big Ron loses his head and sheds the red.......2007-10-05

Mexican director Guillermo del Toro's third English language feature is an enjoyable comic book superhero romp starring the peerless Ron Perlman (as Hellboy himself). Big Red Ron wisecracks and chews cigars as he battles beautifully-realised CG hell-hounds in just the sort of impressive baroque sets we have come to expect from him; it seems del Toro can't get enough of letting the red stuff run through sewers and caverns - the danker the better.

While the script is occasionally aimless, it's also very witty. Perlman plays Hellboy like an indignant teenager, full of tantrums and sarcastic retorts. He's ably supported by John Hurt, Rupert Evans, and Jeffrey Tambor, all hamming it up deliciously; Selma Blair seems somewhat vacant by comparison. The plot is ludicrous of course, but never boring. Del Toro is as bold as ever - not only in the casting of a decidedly non-stellar cult hero in the title role, but also in his wanton references to real historic villains to bolster the menace of his many menaces. But it is generally breezy stuff: silly, too violent for younger children, and yet sweet-natured and - Superman Returns and Spiderman 3 take note - FUN.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie and fantastic Blu-ray.......2007-03-28

I love this movie and think Ron Perlman is the perfect Hellboy. I loved the story, all of the special effects and, especially, the cast.

The Blu-ray is equally fantastic; the picture quality and lossless PCM soundtrack are amazing. This is a definite A+, must have Blu-ray if you like this movie.

I imported this to the US and it plays on US players (it is encoded for all regions) so if you cannot wait for the US release later this year and want a sure thing, great import this is a great one.

5 out of 5 stars Hellboy: A Reel Collection Review.......2008-01-01

This is an incredibly well-presented DVD set, which contains one of the most uniquely dark and compelling comic book adaptations in recent years. The Reel Collection currently consists of quite a varied and yet oddly modest compilation of films, spread across genres as varied as horror, the historical war movie, science-fiction and some of the great modern classics of cinema. So I doubt that anyone except the most die-hard of film-buffs could justify to themselves purchasing all twelve of the movies in this eclectic compilation, at least not purely for the sake of owning every edition. But going by the quality of this particular example, I have to admit to being tempted myself.

I bought this DVD because I wanted a special edition of this film, a film that in my view breathes new life and dynamism into one of my favourite comic book creations and this edition is nothing if not special...

The Case - composed of a durable, thick card depicting a great image of the film's hero and with an aperture that reveals the tin inside.

Interior - thick protective black foam protects the old-style replica film reel tin that holds the two DVD discs - one for the film and the other for the special-features.

Art Cards (x4) - can be found stored behind the foam. These glossy high-quality images depict some of the best characters and scenes from the movie. On the reverse of each is a short anecdote on the making of the film.

Last, but not least - the menu's and extra's are well-presented and completely comprehensive, just as with the normal 2-disc version, no fan of `Hellboy' could wish for more. In conclusion - I recommend snapping up your copy before it disappears forever.

5 out of 5 stars I'm fireproof... you're not.......2004-10-26

When I first read about Hellboy I was a little unsure about the concept, don't get me wrong, I have a particular fascination for movies based on comic characters - especially Marvell comic characters, though being honest I'd never even heard of Hellboy, and based on what I'd read about the character; a red being/creature with one big stone hand/fist and a red pointed tail who, as a child was transported from another dimension (or hell if you like) during a Nazi experiment and is then captured and raised by a secret CIA type organisation and trained to fight evil in return for sanctuary just sounded a little too much for me. However, when I discovered that Ron Perlman (Blade2, Alien Resurrection) had been cast for the part of Hellboy, I decided to give it a watch, and I'm glad I did, it's brilliant!

Ron Perlman is a fine actor, and is brilliant as Hellboy. His fantastic deep rich voice and dry sarcastic wit combined with his cool facial expressions just bring the character to life in a way I don't think anyone else could... Ron Perlman IS Hellboy; He was made for the part!

The story/plot is pretty much standard fair; an evil adversary (Rasputin!) is planning to open a portal to hell and bring civilisation as we know it to an end, and yep you guessed it, Hellboy has to stop him. However, this evil enemy is also not of this earth and has the power to summon all manner of mythical creatures etc to help him achieve his goal; consequently the film is awash with all manner of high quality special effects and CGI, which only adds to this films appeal.

Definitely recommended, I loved it, I'm sure you will too.

Hellboy 2 is already underway; I just hope it's as enjoyable as this.
