4 out of 5 stars Sleuthing with a Supernatural Sidekick!.......2007-12-22

A clever concept of a private eye haunted by his murdered partner who helps him solve crimes. Good cast and imaginative plots. Appears a little dated in places but still has good entertainment value with a good few laughs. A nice boxed set.

5 out of 5 stars You'll WANT to believe in ghosts.......2007-08-20

It's very hard to go back to things you loved as a kid and still enjoy them. Old episodes of Doctor Who look laughable - you can tell the monsters are made of ping-pong balls and roofing felt, possibly in the Blue Peter studio. Alias Smith and Jones is an unthreatening ripoff of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Wacky Races? Every single episode is exactly the same - it's worse than Little Britain!

This, however, is special. Forget the desecration of this fine comedy-supernatural thriller-detective series by Vic and Bob. They just tried too hard, missing what those behind the new Doctor Who have achieved so spectacularly by a country mile.

What makes this series so good? Well, not all of it IS good - some of it is pretty awful - but when it works, it really works. The key actors are unsurpassed, the plots always inventive but perhaps the key to it all is the theme.

I don't believe in ghosts. I think Derek Acorah is a plonker. But this series, more than anything except perhaps the film The Sixth Sense, makes you WANT to believe in ghosts. The idea that a friendship can be so strong that it will endure beyond the grave is a compelling one - and that's what Jeff and Marty have got.

Long live Randall and Hopkirk! Well, one of them anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Randall and Hopkirk lives!!.......2007-07-11

I was never going to give this collection anything other than 5 stars for the content of the series alone. For me, Randall and Hopkirk and the Persuaders are the best of ITC's incredible output of TV film series of the sixties and seventies. No coincidence that both shows feature totally engaging double acts in the leads.

However, as much as I love the Persuaders, it was always Randall and Hopkirk that I held most dearly to my heart. Maybe, and quite bizzarly, I think it was the more accessable characters in Randall and Hopkirk that won the day. Kenneth Cope and Mike Pratt's character's, albeit one of them a ghost, were much more regular, everyday, likable chaps, whereas Wilde and Sinclair were from a more glamorous lifestyle - as well as being played by two superstars of the day - and that made them seem a little less real perhaps, whilst still being, for me, one of the best and most natural double acts to grace the small screen. So, whilst both programmes were the two stand out quality productions of ITC, it's Randall and Hopkirk by a whisker.

I missed the previous DVD release of the show, and have eagerly awaited this special edition. I haven't had time to watch all the episodes yet, but have been pleased with the presentation quality of the episodes I have seen. The extras too are great, with an informative documentary on the programme featuring stars and production crew, an affectionate look at the life of Mike Pratt (not a bad word about him, which, as a fan is exactly how I liked it) and more that I will be delving into in the near future. There are a couple of booklets in the package that look very painstaking - Andrew Pixley isn't my first choice writer for these sort of things, but you know you're going to get a lot of detail and enthusiasm if not the most engaging of prose (though I know there are many that would prefer the more no nonsense approach).

All in all, just having all the episodes on DVD in a good quality presentation at an affordable opening price is reason enough to give this five stars, but given the extras I personally find it irrisistible, and the highlight release of the last few years.

Randall And Hopkirk Deceased - Complete [1969]

Amazon.co.uk Review

The twist of private-eye show Randall & Hopkirk Deceased is that in the first episode, gumshoe Marty Hopkirk (Kenneth Cope) is killed off by the villains, only to pop up in an immaculate white suit as a ghost visible only to his hardboiled partner Jeff Randall (Mike Pratt). In theory, the supernatural streak--which meant a complex set of rules about Marty's appearances and effects on the physical world--should lead the show into wilder territory, but most episodes squander the team's unique abilities on ordinary cases about blackmail and murder-for-profit. A persistent subplot has the living Jeff getting cosy with the dead Marty's widow Jean (Annette Andre) to the discomfort of her late husband. The elementary effects and the nice underplaying of the leads have a certain period charm, and the show could afford a high calibre of special guest villains and dolly birds. A 1990s remake with Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer hasn't obliterated memories of the original. --Kim Newman

One aspect of the series is Annette Andre, the co-star of this television program. She is definately eye candy and I recommend the series. Even better, I get to meet Andre personally at the Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention in Aberdeen, Maryland in September. I plan to get an autograph and have my picture taken with her. If you are not familiar with this talented and beautiful actress, this TV series shows just how good she is. Amazon.com has a great price so grab your copy today.

5 out of 5 stars Classic 1960s British TV!!.......2004-12-13

Another excellent series from the Lou Grade stable (who gave us such classics as The Avengers & the Gerry Anderson puppet classics Thunderbirds & Captain Scarlet to name but a few) and first shown in 1968, this is a typical gem from that golden age of UK television where programmes of a consistently high standard were made. With a few exceptions, this is sadly not the case nowadays.

Set around a struggling PI agency called Randall & Hopkirk where one of the partners in the firm (Marty Hopkirk) gets bumped off in a car accident & comes back as a ghost whom only Jeff Randall the other partner in the firm (and one or two other incidental characters) can see. This makes for some really comical moments, and the storylines whilst being typical PI hokum are very easy to watch and follow with plenty to keep the grey matter occupied without being stereotyped or corny. Good entertainment & plenty of nostalgia for those like me who long to return to that sixties sense of sunny optimism that disappeared so soon in the 1970s.

Yet another high quality digital restoration in full colour from the Carlton Visual Entertainment stable, this is the entire collection of 26 episodes. The sound is only in mono, but what do you expect for 1968? And there isn't much in the way of extras, just some stills & a few trailers, but to me they're just the decorations on the cake anyhoo - it's the programmes themselves that matter!

Don't confuse this set with that AWFUL 90s re-make starring Reeves & Mortimer, this is the original and the best. You'll be playing the theme tune over and over again in your head!

Recommended!

5 out of 5 stars They dont make them like this anymore.......2004-07-26

I was only a child when i used to watch the series on Tv and it is and was just a brilliant programme.Great atmosphere, Humour, Lovely ladies and classic villians. It brings back great memories of great times for me.The remake should never have been made.AWFUL!!
Buy this collection its Brilliant!!

5 out of 5 stars The original and best.......2003-10-02

Now, whatever you do, don't get confused with the re-make.
If you've not and are holding blurred memories of that gaudy little programme you saw repeated on BB2 in th nineties or on daytime telly in the 80s then you've got the one. If you sat down and watched with regularity you'll need no persuading this is worth the money.

If not, why not.

True, the whimsy may be a tad affected and the special effects are barely up to what Doctor Who was up to at the time, but this is charming and funny and gritty.

Yes, gritty.

Mike Randall is a downest of down at heels detectyives who solves his cases with the aid of the mischievious sprite that is the ghost of his dead partner, Marty Hopkirk. This much you should already be aware of. If you thought Emilia Fox was a fox, however, just wait until you get to know Annette Andre's wonderful widow, Jeannie.

The three actors work wonderfully well together and the double act of the titular characters is as pleasanly grating, as Jeannie is pleasing to the eye.

It's gritty because so many of the cases the get involved with are pretty humdrum affairs with their fair share of base criminals and ineffectual shyters. Occasionally there'll be a supernatural twist but it's a sideline for the most part.

It's set in a seriously real world where heroes lose fist fights no matter how many times they win through iin the end and the fantasy aspects sparkle through with gusto.

If you're sick of the Avengers, are bored by the Persuaders and want to tell the Saint to go to heck, try this show! After catching Randall And Hopkirk (Deceased) on Nick-At-Night, I was dissapointed to find out that (1) it's not on video in Austalia (2) They only made 26 episodes. Well, now that it's arrived on DVD over in the UK, I'm afraid I'll have to multi-region my player and buy the discs! Mike Pratt is brilliant as Randall, the detective who always looks like he's been up all night, and Kenneth Cope (who has a VERY big filmography!) plays Hopkirk, who is the comic relief as the detective with one defective - he's a ghost...

If you are not familiar with this talented and beautiful actress, this TV series shows just how good she is. Amazon.com has a great price so grab your copy today.

4 out of 5 stars Detectives aint what they used to be !.......2002-06-19

This DVD includes four fantastic episodes from a true classic of TV detective shows.

This original (for its time) format cannot fail to entertain, as Jeff Randall (Mike Pratt), the gumshoe that looks like he has a permanent hangover, is joined by his dearly departed ex-colleague Marty Hopkirk, who helps him solve a series of quirky, sixties-esque mysteries.

Hopkirk, played brilliantly by the wonderful Kenneth Cope, is now a ghost forced to wander the earth for 100 years with only his former partner as company.

Pratt and Cope compliment each other perfectly with, Pratt's dead-pan/sarcastic dialogue countered by Cope's childlike jokes and want for attention. Here in episodes 7-10 both actors are at ease with each other and the plots flow well.

This really is a refreshing change from the run of the mill detective shows from the 60's to present day and is highly recommended.

Reeves & Mortimers remake series pales badly in comparison - if it aint broke, don't fix it.

I hope you enjoy.

Amazon.co.uk Review

The twist of this private-eye show is that in the first episode, gumshoe Marty Hopkirk (Kenneth Cope) is killed off by the villains, subsequently popping up in an immaculate white suit as a ghost visible only to his hardboiled partner Jeff Randall (Mike Pratt). A recent remake with Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer hasn't obliterated memories of the original.

This disc contains episodes one and two: "My Late Lamented Friend and Partner" and "A Disturbing Case". --Kim Newman

4 out of 5 stars Randall & Hopkirk a partnership that is heaven sent........2000-08-12

Meet the detective partners with a differance one of them is dead. Randall and Hopkirk can solve crimes like no other private detectives can. When doors are closed , Marty simply walks right through them. This is one partnership that is heaven sent. The bad guys in these stories don't stand a ghost of a chance. Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) appearing for the first time on dvd at this great price is a must buy for anyone who enjoys this type of show. Find out how the series began with the first two ever episodes of this great series form the late sixties, which is far better than the recent remake of the series starring Vic and Bob. Mike Pratt and Kenneth Cope work brilliantly together as Jeff Randall and Marty Hopkirk and watching this with the excellent quality of the dvd format brings a whole new life to this series.

2 out of 5 stars The ORIGINAL Series, but only half of it.......2004-07-21

The reviews of this Region 1, NTSC DVD on the sister site, Amazon.com, state that this set includes only 13 of the 26 episodes of the series (presumably, with the other 13 to follow if the powers that be find themselves satisfied with the sales of the first "set"). Th
