S.W.A.T [2003]

Amazon.co.uk Review

Samuel L Jackson and Colin Farrell swagger through S.W.A.T., a guns-and-big-trucks macho extravaganza based on the 1970s TV show of the same name, in which police teams are brought in to take care of extremely dangerous situations. Jackson plays a sergeant brought out of retirement to form a new squad, which includes rebellious Farrell and tough babe Michelle Rodriguez.

After a lot of training and head-butting with a smarmy police captain, the squad gets assigned to transfer the head of a European crime cartel (Olivier Martinez) who's declared on television that he'll give $100 million to anyone who gets him out. Every scumbag in Los Angeles descends to claim the money, turning a routine transfer into a bullet-filled gauntlet. Despite some gaps in logic and a generic flavour, S.W.A.T. will satisfy most action-movie junkies. --Bret Fetzer

4 out of 5 stars ACTION ALL THE WAY.......2007-10-24

It does exactly what it says on the tin !!!

SWAT team led by samuel Jackson, escort a high profile drug lord to a max security prison. Our Columbian friend has publicly offered a hundred million dollars to be rescued. Unfortunately for Samuel Jackson/Colin Farrell, one of their team decide to take the money. Good action scenes if slightly gung-ho in places.

3 out of 5 stars Good Action Film but predictable.......2007-05-03

S.W.A.T. is a nothing more and nothing less than what you expect from it - good action film, the script is very predictable and full of cliches, but it has enough logic and good sense to avoid the ridicule. Acting is average good, effects are average good, and directing is average good - so what you get is an average good action film. Get your popcorn, biers as well if you are at home, sit back and relax.

3 out of 5 stars enjoyable nonescence.......2006-10-12

If ever there was a film that you could mark as a `guilty pleasure' then SWAT is it. A film so obvious and so dumb - that you can't help but enjoy it.

The plot is sports movie simple - grizzled veteran picks out a team of misfit rookies, trains them and then takes them on the most dangerous missions going. Why did I mention sports movie? Because this film is almost one, all they've done is changed a recognisable sport for an elite tactical unit. Hell, you even have the `training' montage. You even have the top boss who wishes they'd failed, but can't help but to be impressed at the end - this film has it all.

And it's because it has everything you've ever seen before that makes it so much fun. You don't have to think, you know what's going to happen. All you have to do is turn off your brain and go along for the ride.

The acting is dumb movie good with all the typical characters - the grizzled vet (Sam Jackson cruising by), the hot head rookie (Colin Farrell), the tom boy/single mother (Michelle Rodriquez) and the cocky/shady cop (guy from Sports Night). Everyone doing just what they need to do.

The action is also good with the second half been a chase through a city/underground/tunnels and onto a bridge - nothing is left out and everything is done BIG.

This movie is loud, stupid and absolutely enjoyable - defiantly one to watch!

2 out of 5 stars It could have all been so much better..........2006-01-15

I have to start off by saying that I'm a fan of action movies, so in theory I should have enjoyed this movie, but instead I was left feeling like it missed so many opportunities. Sure, they blow stuff up and the set-pieces are competently done, but the human element was lacking for me.

Samuel L. Jackson turned in his usual sterling performance, while Colin Farrell was as two-dimensional as ever - I've yet to see a movie with him in it where the character he plays has convinced me in any way. They go through the trouble of bringing in the whole tired cliche of the girl-with-a-guy's-name, the Token Woman whose application wouldn't have been considered if she had a proper girly name and who kicks arse (played by Michelle Rodriguez, who looks bored half the time). Except we never actually see any of this onscreen - after we meet her Token Woman is barely allowed to break a sweat. I kept thinking 'okay, any minute now they're going to make Token Woman kick someone's arse' and it never happens. This movie was a waste of a good supporting cast, really, though kudos to Josh Charles who turns in an excellent and restrained performance as TJ, in comparison to Jeremy Renner (Gamble) who really needs to stop over-acting quite so much.

All in all, I was left feeling cheated and wondering where the rest of the movie was - sadly this was a pallid version of what it might have been. I guess after a steady diet of Hong Kong movies, I like to see my protagonists put some effort into what they're doing...

5 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Film!!.......2005-10-10

I have to disagree with Brett Jordan, as I think SWAT is one of the best films to be released in the last 5 years. The mix of actors add to the excellent storyline that has enough twists and turns to keep you wondering what will happen next. Colin Farrell and Samuel Jackson make an excellent duo. The entire film deserves a lot of credit.
