Amazon.co.uk Review
Samuel L Jackson and Colin Farrell swagger through S.W.A.T., a guns-and-big-trucks macho extravaganza based on the 1970s TV show of the same name, in which police teams are brought in to take care of extremely dangerous situations. Jackson plays a sergeant brought out of retirement to form a new squad, which includes rebellious Farrell and tough babe Michelle Rodriguez. After a lot of training and head-butting with a smarmy police captain, the squad gets assigned to transfer the head of a European crime cartel (Olivier Martinez) who's declared on television that he'll give $100 million to anyone who gets him out. Every scumbag in Los Angeles descends to claim the money, turning a routine transfer into a bullet-filled gauntlet. Despite some gaps in logic and a generic flavour, S.W.A.T. will satisfy most action-movie junkies. --Bret Fetzer

It could have all been so much better..........2006-01-15
Samuel L. Jackson turned in his usual sterling performance, while Colin Farrell was as two-dimensional as ever - I've yet to see a movie with him in it where the character he plays has convinced me in any way. They go through the trouble of bringing in the whole tired cliche of the girl-with-a-guy's-name, the Token Woman whose application wouldn't have been considered if she had a proper girly name and who kicks arse (played by Michelle Rodriguez, who looks bored half the time). Except we never actually see any of this onscreen - after we meet her Token Woman is barely allowed to break a sweat. I kept thinking 'okay, any minute now they're going to make Token Woman kick someone's arse' and it never happens. This movie was a waste of a good supporting cast, really, though kudos to Josh Charles who turns in an excellent and restrained performance as TJ, in comparison to Jeremy Renner (Gamble) who really needs to stop over-acting quite so much.
All in all, I was left feeling cheated and wondering where the rest of the movie was - sadly this was a pallid version of what it might have been. I guess after a steady diet of Hong Kong movies, I like to see my protagonists put some effort into what they're doing...
A Brilliant Film!!.......2005-10-10
