Amazon.co.uk Review
The Core is high-tech Hollywood hokum at its finest; smarter than Armageddon and equally extreme. It's scientifically ridiculous, naturally, but this variant of Fantastic Voyage at least tries to be credible as it plunges deep into the Earth's inner core, where a formulaic team of experts pilot an earth-boring ship to jump-start the planet's spinning molten interior, now stalled by a military secret that could seal the fate of all humankind. It's a geophysicist's daydream, which only a fine ensemble cast could rescue from absurdity, and director Jon Amiel (Entrapment, Copycat) draws excellent work (and plenty of humorous interplay) from Aaron Eckhart, Hilary Swank, Stanley Tucci, Delroy Lindo and a host of memorable supporting players, especially DJ Qualls as the world's greatest cyber-nerd. With enough digital FX disasters to satisfy anyone's apocalyptic fantasies, this is a popcorn thriller with all the bells and whistles that its genre demands. Sit back, pump up the volume and enjoy the dazzling ride. --Jeff Shannon

BIT OF A GOOSE.......2007-10-26
If special effects won awards, this film would be okay. Unfortunately the rest of the film was non-descript and lacked conviction.
First Rate Disaster Movie.......2007-09-17
The Earth's electromagnetic field is crumbling, a top secret U.S govt project may or may not be responsible and it falls to a ragbag group of scientists led by Aaron Eckhart and Stanley Tucci to journey to the centre of the planet and kickstart it back into life by detonating five nuclear devices.
Directed by Jon Amiel(The Singing Detective)this is top notch entertainment with a sharp sense of humour, colourful characters, pretty good special effects(the bird attack in Trafalgar Square is nicely judged) and a strong and believable emotional bond between the main players.
Some people seem hard to please, the science while being outlandish is played out persuasively by an excellent cast and of it's type this movie does everything it sets out to do and more.
Highly Recommended.
Sadly this didn't blow up when it was made.......2007-09-12
This is the typical Hollywood blockbluster disaster type film and although it does have its moments these are so are rarely apparent amongst the dross you don't always notice them. This is just not very good and whilst its not so bad you can't stand it you'll find your finger close to the stop button on several occasions. I don't like picking holes in films for the sake of it but The Core ironically doesn't have one and is a hollow shambles of a film that could have been good if only it had been made by someone who loved it. Shameless.
Enjoyed it more than I thought I would.......2007-07-18
Lets start by saying I was only watching this because there was nothing else on, I didnt expect anything from it and I knew it would be ridiculas and highly unbelivable, that said, I was plesently suprised at what I thought was a well put together action, exciting and adventurus film.
The film starts briliantly and the shuttle decent and subsequent crash landing made for on the the best opening sequences I've seen in a film of this type - it was exciting.
The film is good, all the way upto the actual decent into the core, which is where the utter nonsense factor comes into play - from here on in its all beyond belief even to a person with the broadest of minds, But it still keeps you watching.
good flick imo, and I'd watch again
Really poor.......2007-07-11
This film is a great example of an awful Hollywood blockbuster. Its hangs together on the worst kind of cliches, and as previous reviewers have said, has no scientific basis at all. At the start its not that bad. The crew of a space shuttle have to land in the middle of L.A. because of the start of the Earths core slowing down, which leads the Shuttles guidance systems astray. This is done quite well although the CGI special effects aren't that great. From there its a rapid decent, excuse the pun.
The film is reminisent of Armageddon in style, and amazingly probably not as good, because its even more scientifically unlikely. Quite why Hilary Swank decided to do this film is beyond me. However she and Bruce Greenwood (so good in Thirteen Days as JFK) are the only redeeming features. If you loved Armegeddon you will probably love this, so if in doubt rent it first!
