The Shadow [1994]

Amazon.co.uk Review

Another masked avenger is reincarnated as a big budget movie. Idle playboy Lamont Cranston (Alec Baldwin), schooled in Tibetan mysticism, fights crime in late '30s New York while wearing a natty hat and false beak. He finds time to romance telepathic sweetie Margo Lane (Penelope Miller), whose crusty old scientist Dad (Ian McKellen) has just invented an atom bomb which is in danger of falling into the hands of Shiwan Khan (John Lone), conquest-happy last descendent of Genghis Khan.

Director Russell Mulcahy turns out the regulation death traps (a locked chamber filling with water, a bomb timer which ticks away during the climax) and the Shadow breezes through via nifty "invisible" effects. It evokes the conventions and charms of 1930s' pulp fiction in rather more nostalgic mode than Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, and adds little of its own attitude, although a sly camp sensibility (notably in the extremely chi-chi Tim Curry and John Lone as the villains) goes for snickering at the expense of tension. A pleasant, eye-pleasing movie but, after the super-heroic likes of Batman, The Crow and The Mask, the merely mysterious Shadow seems somewhat grandfatherly and remote. --Kim Newman

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A surprisingly good film........2008-02-12

I was all prepared to write The Shadow off as yet another superhero flop. After all, so many films of the genre have been a huge letdown. So I was very pleasantly surprised to find that this was an highly entertaining romp with a difference when it came on TV recently.

As usual, the alter ego of the hero is a man with a past, a dozen hang ups and insecurities. When the film starts, he is not at all likeable. However, a meeting with a mysterious guru sets his destiny in motion and he is pitted against a power mad descendant of Genghis Khan.

The film moves to 1930's New York City and the period feel is well done. The film is helped by some top names, Ian McKellern, Alec Baldwin and a manic Tim Curry are among them.

It all comes together nicely and works well. This is a great fun film. It doesn't take itself too seriously and as my Freeview threw a few blips to mess the signal up from time to time, I will be buying a copy of The Shadow for myself.

4 out of 5 stars What a blast!.......2008-01-23

Simply a classic, one for your comic book hero collection. The perfect menu of hero, villain, and the dame. Alec Baldwin plays the shadow with perfection......... mean, moody and mysterious. Stand back batman.... the shadow will sort it. There really should have been a sequel!

5 out of 5 stars The Franchise That Should Have Been.........2006-06-24

Utter God damn classic. From the rip-roaring music, to funky special effects, to the cheesy acting to the cracking idea of the whole thing itself. See it and ignore the cynical critic in you. OIt's just great to see Batman go hand in hand with Indiana Jones and actually have a film that lives up to that tag for once.

5 out of 5 stars Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of man?.......2006-06-04

The Shadow knows!
This is a very entertaining film that, like Rocketeer, failed to spark the hoped for franchise. It's got great production design values a brilliant, slightly creepy anti-hero. Maybe it was the hammy acting that turned people away. Like Rocketeer it stands up to comparison with the 'Saturday Matinee' Indiana Jones era type films. Great fun.

3 out of 5 stars The Shadow.......2004-07-25

I have loved this film for many years now. I first saw it when i was young and now im in my teens years and i still find it great fun to watch. Its not the most action-packed film but the story carrys you through the film nicely and i think this film is very under rated! you could do alot worse than to see this fantisy filled film.

This movie is one of my favourites. The moving feeling I had right after watching it for the first time still remains convincing and I am going to watch it again,as I think it is one of the best movies done.Based on a great Isabel Allendes novel it pictures the "hot" environment and latin-american ways.....And Antonio Banderas is simply gorgeous .Watch The House of Spirits or Eva Luna as well.
