    Amazon.co.uk Review

Has Hollywood produced many more rounded, enjoyable trilogies such as this? We think not, and it's real testament to the quality of the Back To The Future trilogy that it all holds up so spectacularly well over twenty years since the first film appeared.

The films, as you probably know, following the time-travelling antics of Marty McFly, played by Michael J Fox, and Dr Emmett Brown, brought wonderfully to life by Christopher Lloyd. Across the three films, Marty and the Doc head back to the old west, meet Marty's kids in the future, nearly ruin the meeting between his parents in the past, and all the while deal with the unwelcome interference of Biff Tannen and his family tree.

Bluntly, for sheer excitement, these movies are hard to beat. Mixing in tightly woven scripts with good effects, lively direction and an endearing set of performances from a superbly-chosen cast, the whole trilogy is just tremendously good fun. Fox and Lloyd must take a good chunk of credit for that, as their on-screen partnership is in many ways the glue that sticks everything so firmly in place, but conversely, it feels odd singling them out when so much else has gone right.

A worthy addition to any DVD collection, the Back To The Future Trilogy is what can happen when Hollywood really works. From the carefully layered screenplays through to the proliferation of standout moments, you can only hope that the occasional rumours of a fourth instalment continue to prove false. After all, how can the filmmakers possibly match their achievements with these three?--Simon Brew

5 out of 5 stars Back To The Future.......2007-11-02

I grew up on this Trilogy and still love every second of every film. You can't get much better than this for original storyline and characters. It takes the time travel theme and explores it in much greater depth than any previous film. Fox is superb as the various incarnations of the McFly family (with ground breaking effects for the time) and Christopher Lloyd plays the eccentric inventor to perfection. The time periods in the second and third film are rendered with such detail that you really become engrossed in the film and live it along with the characters. These films aren't heavy, serious movies, but they are brilliantly directed and acted and a great slice of family fun for a Sunday afternoon or just about anytime really. The extras are excellent and really add to your understanding of the whole series and are fascinating to watch in their own right. All in all, these are great films and are highly recommended, worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars What the hell is a jiggawot?.......2007-06-25

Ah, if only all Sci-Films could have the genuine feel good, saturday afternoon film feel as Back to The Future.

The films, in case you haven't seen them - and if you haven't where have you been? revolve around teenager Marty McFly, a budding guitarist, with dreams of fame and fortune and a lovely girlfriend called Jennifer. His family is embarrasing - whether its his geeky sister, umemployed older brother, pushover father who is constantly bullied by his boss, Biff, or alcoholic mother or Uncle "Jailbird" Joey, Marty prefers to spend his time in the company of mad scientist "Doc" Emmett Brown and his dog Einstien.

Despite his quite dysfunctional family, Marty is a happy go lucky lad, and you warm to his character instantly. When he sees Doc's Latest invention, he is literately agog with amazement.
"You built a time machine....out of a delorean?"
Michael J Fox and Christopher Lloyd make it believable. Lloyd is excellent as the lunatic scientist, and Michael is fabulous as the teenager who ends up sent back to 1955 when he is forced to make a getaway from Libyan terrorists who want their plutoniam back. You see, when the Delorean hits 88 mph it activates the time circuit, and before Marty knows were, or WHEN he is, he's scaring the residants of 1955 Hill Valley, bumping into his parents (literately) and causing time paradoxes when his own mother - a teenager at the time, falls in love with him, instead of his dad.

    "Woah, this is heavy."

Brilliantly original, hillarious, with nods to other sci fi movies, BTTF is highly entertaining as our hero tries to find his way home, coutresy of a bolt of lightning, because plutonium isn't readly available in 1955. The whole film is very light hearted, wholly enjoyable with a lovely fifties feel to it. On its own, BTTF earns five stars!

Back to the Future II - The inevitable sequal is darker than the first film, almost in an Empire Strikes Back sort of a way. There's more scope, more depth and dangerous time paradoxes that see Marty in the future 2015 to be exact. This time, Marty's on a mission to stop his kids from following a path to self destruction which destroys his whole family. This is only a sub-plot in the film, for Marty decides to buy a Sports Almanac, a book predicting all the race results for years to come, but Doc doesn't approve of Marty's purchase, and promptly bins it.
"I didn't build the time machine for financial gain..." he grimly tells Marty.

Unfortunately, Biff - in 2015 is listening, and manages to get hold of both the almanac and the time machine. This leads to a dangerous alternative version of 1985, where Biff is rich and powerful... and married to Marty's mother!

Now the guys have to find out when Biff received the almanac in 1955, get it from him, and restore the "real" version of 1985 rather than the hellish version of 1985 created by Bill's wealth and power.

Still with us? BTTF II Is excellent, if not a little crowded feeling, because of the story arc it deals with. It's definitely darker than the other two films, but still merits its five stars - some of the special effects haven't dated well however, and somehow, this feels older than its prequal and sequal. Nonetheless, its another hugely entertaining installment.

Finally, Back to the Future III.

The Delorean was struck by lightning at the end of the second film, leaving Marty stranded, so again he has to get back to 1985. However, upon recovering the Delorean that Doc hid away in some tunnels, he discovers that Doc is in 1885, back in the Wild West, and is enjoying himself. There's one snag - Marty stumbles across Doc's grave, and discovers Doc is going to die, shot in the back over the matter of a few dollars.

Again, its another great installment, with Marty hallariously dressed up in the worst cowboy outfit ever seen, and adopting the name Clint Eastwood. Along the way, he bumps into his anscestors, and Doc acquires a doe eyed love interest - Clara Clayton.

The final installment is good, but not as good as the other too. It wraps things up, and sees Marty learning an important lesson about himself, and how he deals with situation which undoubtably, have a profound effect on his future. The last film would only get three stars from me, as I feel the romantic interest in it weakens the overall storyline, but it still has its good moments, and the other two films help the boxset maintain its overall five star rating.

There's some nice extras on the last disc and plenty to be getting on with. Its a good value for money boxset, and is probably one of the best sci-fi trilogys around.

So... let's go back to the FUTURE!!

Back To The Future Trilogy [1985]

    Amazon.co.uk Review

Before he grew up and started to become a serious filmmaker, Robert Zemeckis created arguably the most unashamedly entertaining film trilogy ever with his Back to the Future series. It's here that Zemeckis came closest to emulating his mentor Steven Spielberg, and here, too, that he showed his own talent for combining flashy visual effects and knock-about comedy. The vivacious screenplays, cowritten with Bob Gale, are chock full of forwards and backwards-looking jokes, 1950s nostalgia and wry nods to other movies. Michael J Fox and Christopher Lloyd, both alumni of successful small-screen sitcoms (Family Ties and Taxi respectively), bring a frenetic energy to their roles, but also the warmth and likability needed to carry the audience with them through time.

Don't try and unravel the time-travel thread running throughout, as that way lie paradoxes: just accept its inherent absurdity and enjoy the ride. Marty McFly travels from 1985 to 1955 in a souped-up DeLorean sports car (Back to the Future), then forward in time to 2015 and back to 1955 again (Back to the Future II), before going all the way back to the Old West of 1885 (Back to the Future III). Matters become progressively more complicated as actions in the past have repercussions for the future, and vice versa. Marty learns life-lessons and Doc finds love at last; the joyful, helter-skelter pace never slackens for an instant. --Mark Walker

On the DVD: Back to the Future travels through time to the DVD era with a three-disc set charting the much-loved trilogy in full, along with an abundance of special features. The real joy in this box set is the "Making of the Trilogy" featurette, which spans the three discs and offers a wealth of information on the films. The deleted scenes have not faired well with age, with the visuals and sound suffering immensely. On Disc One the anecdotes can be played along with the film as subtitles, which is more than can be said for the commentary with Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale recorded at the California University, which is simply a Q & A session--not played along with the movie--and would have been stronger as a filmed special feature. But all in all as three-disc sets go it doesn't get much better than this--and you won't need 1.21 gigawatts of electricity to enjoy it. --Nikki Disney

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Lightning strikes x3.......2008-01-02

A personal favourite of mine, I HIGHLY recommend this set, you get 3 dvds each containing digitally restored versions of these excellent movies. The bonus features for disc one are fairly impressive giving an excellent insight into part 1 with original interviews with the cast and crew and new ones with Michael J fox and Robert Zemeckis and co creator Bob Gale. Each movie has a fairly good documentary; other features include surprisingly enjoyable anecdotes that can be played during the movies, which appear like subtitles with a fun fact or trivia concerning the film. There are scarce deleted scenes virtually all of which come in their rough editing format. Based on the special features alone id say MAYBE get the 4-disc set. The 3 disc is great and the bonus features are quite good but you will may get a bit more on the 4 disc edition. Now for the movies.

A timeless (quite literally) classic trilogy, this is clever and fantastically entertaining. There is no weak link here, which makes them all the more satisfying. Unlike other great franchises which produces some disappointing sequels for example Alien after the first two or the NEW star wars trilogy, Jaws or even the third Godfather these films set a standard in pure entertainment without letting it fall at any point. In this trilogy you will see a teenager by the name of Marty travel through time in a Delorean car made by the "Doc" Brown. While at first this may sound silly and brainless it is anything but (as a sceptical friend of mine found out upon viewing part2 which he gave 10/10.)

The plot lines surrounding the time travel are wonderfully intricate, small things that happened that almost naturally you forgot about carry great importance latter on and time travel has never been presented in such a seemingly paradox free state, at least from what I have seen in film. The acting is superb, the effects are simple yet effective, enhanced by a tremendous score by Alan Silvestri which amplifies the story even further, a story which has just about a bit of everything you might want be it romance, comedy, music, Sci-Fi, Drama, and some brilliantly done end sequences which now how to build suspense. Honestly I can't find a thing wrong with any of them.10 out of 10.Classics. Film one revolves around Marty Mcfly a teenage boy making the most of life in the eighties, his life is pretty ordinary but he has an extraordinary friend in "Doc" Brown. One faithful night Marty is transported back in time in a wonderful sequence involving a machine gun, car chase, and terrorists. He arrives in the year 1955 and soon encounters his parents. From here on the writing is just superb, it's funny, clever, and nostalgic but overall wonderfully entertaining without ever resorting to lowbrow comedy. There is hardly a dull moment in film one and the last thirty minutes are just stunning, a rock and roll ride that manages considerable suspense in the closing minutes...till the very end.

Films two and three were made simultaneously and easily maintain the quality of the first, the second at times surpassing it I thought. In both these films without giving the story away you see the future and old west respectively and it's just great, because the story somehow seamlessly switches from the present-past-present-future-past etc without ever becoming dull, cheesy or stupid and characters are given whole new dimensions thanks to the consequences of time travel which in the case of picture two makes things (if possible) more interesting, the stakes are raised. Lets face it, you don't generally get Science fiction, romance, westerns, period films, adventure stories all rolled into one over three movies which stay fresh and entertaining. Here you do. A great adventure trilogy that never gets old and can be viewed again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Back To The Future.......2007-11-02

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Film Trilogy....................2007-06-01

For me these 3 films are the greatest Film Trilogy so far.

The first film is a true classic of cinema and I still enjoy repeated viewings, noticing things that I had missed previously.

The second film is widely criticised but I still think it is a cracker. No one else has dared to make a film with another film entwined within it and pulled it off. My only gripe with the box set is with Part II as it has a sound fault which is also evident in the 4 disc Ultimate edition.

Part III is a superb end to the series and ties up all the loose ends well with the cast and crew obviously having a lot of fun along the way.

Overall this is the better box set (and the original) of the 3 now available. It's a shame that the extras with the ultimate 4 disc edition could not have been included with the original. That's business sense ($$$$) I suppose.

5 out of 5 stars Ready for the future.......2006-05-25

I'm so pleased the timeless trilogy of Marty and Doc' Brown was released on DVD, to keep forever. The sound quality is better than ever, the picture looks sharp too, an its a bonus to watch the great extra features available - including a rare piece of footage that shows the hoverboards from the second film where real, and used magnets to repel against the earth, thus giving lift - just see for yourself.
I'll probably the first reviewer to explain the plot.. as basic as I can (It may not set in the first time you watch it). Doctor Emmett Brown is a local scientist, see as a nut by many people in the neighbourhood, but his freind, the young Micheal J Fox (Marty) is amazed by his latest invention that actually works - a time travelling vehicle. It would be spoiling it to go into detail the highs and lows of their travelling, but across three solid films, its great entertainment.
While the first film takes just one adventure into the 1950's, in trying to get back to present day after many events from the old era, the second film takes another another angle... literally! For me, it was the cleverest film, just to see how the first film was combined with it, in that to the producers must have known their would have been a second film, thus shooting from lots and lots of angles from the first film. Like I said, its a doddle putting the plot into words for new comers, its just something you have to watch and see for yourselves. The third film sees a fresh new look as the two time travellers go back to the wild west times, 1885. Its great to see yet more adventure, and very clever filming again to shoot Micheal J Fox more than once in a scene, as he takes on 2 roles, due to the need for family likeness.
Favourite scene? The final film, and pretty much the final scene - so sad and well acted, but all isn't lost as Marty soon finds out..
I've seen the Delorean in real, and wasn't impressed, its actually a very flat, boring and tinny car with very fat wheels. The film however, makes it look like a wonder machine, and is very impressive when you see the detail in making it looking like a converted time machine. Score? 10/10 always!

    5 out of 5 stars BTTF - The Trilogy.......2005-11-10

It won't take 1.21 gigawatts of power for this film to blow you away, possibly the best thing to come from the 80s, Back To The Future is absolutely unmissable! Though it may seem an unlikely pairing, Marty and the Doc are perfectly cast in this must have for any film fan's collection. Definately the best action adventure-sci-fi-western-comedy ever made!!

Good, honest family entertainment. The three films are linked, with clever continuity as the characters jump through time, unable to change events, which could have drastic consequences on their present day existence.

Well acted by Michael J. Fox and thoroughly recommended for all the family.

One of the best trilogys of all time. These original classics from the eighties sees Marty (Michael J Fox) sent back and forward through time altering the course of his life with his eccentric and much older pal Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd). In the first installment Marty goes back to 1955 by mistake and unfortunately finds his mother falling for him, he must now get his mother and father together or else face the consequences of being wiped from exsistence, with bully Biff making it even harder for him will it be too late...The sequel sees Marty in the year 2015 trying to correct some wrongs in his future family life, but when Marty buys a sports almanac with sporting results until the end of the century future Biff seizes the oppurtunity to steal the book and the time machine and travel back to hand it to his younger self, the heroes must now go back retrieve the book otherwise it could be the end of the world..In the final chapter Doc brown is blasted back to the wild west and after marty dicovers a tombstone with his friends name on it some 100 years later he must go back and save his partner from being killed by Biffs ancestor Buford "MAD DOG" Tannen and get back to the future...The connection between the movies is faultless and definitely hasn't dated, another must for your DVD collection..
