The English Could Not Call Themselves British Till 1707, I Have Always Been A Scot .......2007-11-01

As usual as in the Amazon review the English are regarded as being British long before their time which process of becoming so started in 1603 with the Union of the Crowns when James the Sixth known to Scots as " the wisest fool in Christendom" took over the vacant English throne on the death of Elizabeth 1 of England. The current monarch is correctly called in Scotland by loyal Scots Elizabeth Regina since we have never had an Elizabeth as a Scottish Queen and in any case she should be known as Elizabeth the First, Queen of Britain OR ALTERNATELY Elizabeth First of Scotland,Second of England ) James then became in his person James Sixth and First. The Scots then to go back to the time of the battle of Bannockburn then were not fighting the British but fighting yet another empire building attempt by the English to continue to keep and extend their power and their frontiers to include what was regarded by Sir William Wallace formerly and Robert the Bruce latterly as what should be a free independent and sovereign country that could be free from England's domination through the puppet King of Scots John Bailol,an English appointment. Edward the First or Longshanks used the fact that Robert the Bruce pledged fealty to the English throne because of his estates in Buckinghamshire to claim that Robert the Bruce our King was pledging loyalty to Edward 1 for Scotland.He was not.
The many campaigns of Wallace in the South and Andrew de Moray in the North helped lay the foundations for our freedom. Edward's brutal treatment of Berwick on Tweed and equally brutal partial hanging,dissection and execution of Wallace and the public display of parts of his body at various points in Scotland laid the groundwork for many Scots to flock to Bruce's banner enabling his campaigns and resulting in Robert the Bruce's glorious victory at Bannockburn over the English 1n 1314 which led finally to Freedom for Scotland. A freedom only betrayed by James Sixth "the wisest fool in Christendom" in 1603 and the rather more inglorious Union of Parliaments in 1707 which saw a (temporary) end of the Scottish Parliament.(Some steal by the sword others by the pen) As one contemporary thought at the time "the end of an auld sang". But we have our Parliament again and it was started again with a great song,"a Man's a Man for a that". Be that as it may Bannockburn continues to be celebrated and to have a high place in Scottish hearts as does the Bruce himself who is about to be commemorated in a new statue in Scotland.
Bannockburn and Wallace and Bruce are central to Scotland and the Scottish psyche and this DVD is a worthy signatory to that fact.
