5 out of 5 stars Sensational swashbuckler.......2007-08-29

A gem largely overlooked due to the poor movie it accompanies but if you like soundtracks and you love swash and buckle, buy this! John Debney has come up trumps with a score perfect to succeed Korngold and Steiner in the modern era. The LSO is as perfect as it always is and the London Voices make a great score even better.
Pirate movies are all too rare in this day of reality shows and true life dreary films and when they do come along they need a soundtrack worthy of the genre. This is one! Get it on that player and get it on loud, as it's meant to be heard and you'll love it.
Matched now by the new Pirates of The Caribbean score but still stands out at the head of the line as one to collect for anyone who loves movie music.

5 out of 5 stars Cutthroat Island.......2003-12-01

A fast moving picture with excellent surround sound. The story from the beginning captures you straight away with the great scenes of both stars on the carriage going through the town under constant barrage of fire from the enemy.
The constant speed at which the film runs keeps you on the edge of your seat and the final outcome although expected is good.
I am ordering a copy of this film purley for my collection,it is a film that could be watched again & again.Well worth the expense.

4 out of 5 stars Indian Jones with a touch of girl power!!.......2002-02-24

What an amazing adventure film, if you like the likes of Indiana Jones with a touch more romance then this is the film for you. Geena Davies plays Morgan Adams a feisty pirate who has to find a map to get to her grandfathers treasure, she hires a slave who she ends up falling for but all the while maintaining her piratey independance. All the action adventure a girl could ever want!!

5 out of 5 stars A great recording of a great film score........2002-01-06

In one of his most massive effort to date, John Debney has provided an excellent score for an awful film. The London Symphony Orchestra and chorus combine to make a thematically entertaining listening experience. The choral outbursts are few and far between but when they occur the are stunning. The lengthy album easily functions outside of the film. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Greatly under-rated swashbuckling adventure.......2001-03-16

Unjustifiably snubbed by the critics at the time and in every review I've read since, this big-budget pirate extravaganza features two full-sized galleons, a novel female all-action hero in Geena Davis, Frank Langella's gratifyingly nasty villain Dawg Brown ("Who wants to die first?"), some terrific stunts and special effects, and a great musical score. Add in Matthew Modine's sparkling performance as small-time thief William Shaw, unwillingly drawn into the world of cut-throats and treasure maps ("A ship! I find myself being fired on by an entire ship!")and you have a film which careers along delightfully until the (literally) explosive ending. A thoroughly enjoyable action-adventure which, notwithstanding the high level of bloodless cartoon violence, really is suitable for the whole family.
