one of the greatest anime's i have ever seen.......2008-01-23
this is (as of yet) one of the best purchases iv had. the anime is set in the town of mabase and involves a 12 year old boy called Naota who,one day is struck down by a mysterious woman on a vesper claiming to be from the galactic space patrol brotherhood called Haruhara Haruko who then goes on to become Naota's family housekeeper.
the stories are all singular (except the last two) so they are easy to return to over long periods of time. the charicters stand out with the dub being absolutely outstanding.
the story is nothing short of breathtaking with every story seeming uniquely crafted (even though there only 6 episodes) the individual stories also hold a freshness that i have yet to see in any other anime.
the animation is superb with bright vibrant colors in certain sections mixed with dark mood setting tones the next. also throughout the first 3 episodes there are several different styles of animation attempted, i found this gave the seres verity and only improved the veiwage.
it would be near impossible to grade flcl with a genre as it is a mixture of everything: action, comedy, thriller, horror. you name it its there. there are plenty of connotations in each episode and a deep rooted philosophical plot based throughout as well and i found it impossible to turn off once it started.
the box set itself is spectacular the box set itself is hard cardboard packing containing four discs (6 episodes spread out over 3 discs and a bounus 4th disc with music videos and extra features)a coupon for a flcl t-shirt a packet of flcl stickers and a 75 page booklet featuring information on the programme notes and a translation of some manga scenes featured in the show.
this is personally one of the best purchases you could get. if you are a fan of Avant-garde or you like a surreal programme that at times oozes philosophically brilliance then this is for you
Nothing ever happens.......2007-08-03
Anime can be pretty weird -- just look at series like "Paranoia Agent" and "Boogiepop Phantom." Really weird, sometimes impossible to totally understand.
But for sheer strangeness and kookiness, the winner has got to be "Fooly Cooly (FLCL)." Even as it pokes fun at typical anime, it tells the surrealist story of a very odd coming-of-age, complete with strange plots, oddball characters, and robots sprouting out of a young boy's head.
Naota is a young boy living what he sees as an oppressively dull existance, in a quiet city dominated by the Medical Mechanica building. The closest thing to excitement is fending off the advances of his brother's troubled girlfriend Mamimi.
Then sudenly a girl on a Vespa runs him over, resuscitates him with a smooch, and then bashes him over the head with a bass guitar. That evening, Naota finds that instead of a bump, he has a horn growing out of his head, and no idea what it is or how to get rid of it.
Despite his efforts to avoid her, Naoto's kooky father has hired the crazy Vespa girl, Haruko, as a housekeeper. To make matters worse, his "horn" turns out to be a robot and a giant mechanical hand -- springing out of a channel in his head. And you thought YOU had problems.
The five episodes that follow don't get any more normal, as Naota must deal with the Mayor's daughter getting his strange power, cat ears, more robots, baseball, bombs, the Pirate King Atomsk, seaweed eyebrows, and the interplanetary Medical Mechanica which may or may not be intent on galactic domination. It all clashes in the final episode.
For newbies, "FLCL" is probably the WORST anime to start with. It's a parodic mishmash of anime in-jokes -- giant robots, fanservice, boy falls for kooky abusive alien girl -- and a storyline that is bizarre to the point where you may not be able to understand what's going on. But oh, is it a fun ride.
As if the plot weren't hyperactive enough, the animation is exaggerated and crazy, full of distorted faces and wild robot battles. Lots of action and overdramatic dialogue ("OH NO.... OOOOOOOOO... an American GIRLFRIEND!"). As if it weren't funny enough, the director sprinkles in homages to other shows, ranging from other anime to "South Park."
And the characters are as bizarre as the story itself. Naoto starts off as a typical bored preteen, but slowly gains confidence and guts as he gets immersed in the weirdness. Haruko is a completely off-the-wall kook who is apparently an alien. And there's a bunch of other weird characters -- troubled pyromaniacs, wistful robots, preteen pervs, and a guy from Interstellar Immigration.
"FLCL" is perhaps the strangest anime in existance. It's also enough to blow the top off of your head, with the strange characters and wildly surrealist plot. Fooly Cooly!

Beautiful.......2004-05-20
This was the first ever anime i watched, and i instantly fell in love with it. The characters are memorable, the storylines humorous and the females attractive. The story revolves around a teenage student/shrine worker who awakens an ancient demon, and finds himself living with girls from across the univers, and as the OVA progresses, getting involved in lots of adventures.
The DVD itself is a fantastic package. The artwork on the front blends well with the see through keepsake, and the back of the box has an episode list. Upon opening it, you are greeted by a nice piece of OVA artwork featuring all the characters, including Washu in nurses outfit!!! Open it again, and four sections are revealed, three for the DVD's and one other.
The DVD's are quite plain to look at, but behind them is a picture of the three godesses (Tsunami, Tokimi and another who i wont reveal as it is a bit of a spoiler)spanning the three dvd storage area's.
The final part of the four piece folder holds an information card, and if you were lucky to get one of the earlier editions(like me) you get a limited edition card.
The episodes themselves are of high quality. The animation is high quality and has been digitally remastered. there are two language settings 5.1 Japanese and channel 2 English. Each of these have there own subtitles. The japanese setting is much better as the music is crisper and louder, but if you dont like subtitles, then its not for you. However, if you only ever watch it in english, try putting on the first set of subtitles, and you can see a lot of changes were made to the dialogue, including some rather risqué ones from episode 7(you'll know what i mean when you watch it).
The episodes never get boring, and if you do ever find yourself drifting off, the third disc features a comprehensive encyclopedia de Tenchi. Everything any fan new or hardcore will need to know including maps, location info, trailers, comics...the list can go on for ever.
All in all this is a superb package. Beautiful sums it up to a tee, dont be put off by the asking prices, you won't be disappointed.

Over 11 hours of anime.......2006-07-13
Overall, this isn't a bad collection of anime. However, if you want quality over quantity you should look somewhere else. You could do MUCH better for the same price.
The first 3 discs are PROJECT A-KO. 5 Episodes (all rated 12) and a Movie (which is a re-telling of 2 of the episodes is rated 15) Overall this series is good, 'though the art is rather bad, but the whole thing is good if you don't take this too seriously.
Next is DOMINATION TANK POLICE (rated 12). All 4 Episodes on 1 disc. The audio-video synchronization for Episodes 3+4 were terrible (they were 8 seconds out) As for the episodes themselves, the art was good, the storyline was better. There is a nice cliff-hanger between some of the episodes. I think Masamune Shirow did a MUCH better job on Ghost In The Shell, but this is still very good.
Then there is M.D Geist. 2 Episodes on 1 disc. Considered to be the worst anime of ALL TIME. Quite a bad reputation! Considering it was made at the same time as Spriggan the art has nothing to brag about. The stroyline was boring and even though it is rated 15 this is quite possibly the goriest anime of all time. This should be avoided at all costs.
Finally the last 2 discs contain LA BLUE GIRL RETURNS Episodes 1-4. (2 episodes on each disc) By far the best series in this box set. It is obviously cut due to british censorship and quite a few scenes are cut. However, a lot is still left in so all you hentai fans won't be too disappointed.
Every disc is English Language ONLY! NO Japanese! NO subtitles! There are several times when you can see Japanese writing, but no English subtitles are shown, so you will have to guess what they are saying.
I was originally going to give this only 2 stars because of the poor quality of M.D Geist and because Project A-Ko seemed to drag on a bit too much. But I felt that there was enough anime here to merit a 3 star rating.
If La Blue Girl was uncut I may have given it 4 stars, but that was never going to happen!
It could have had 4 stars of it had Japanese Language and English subtitles. But, you can't have it all.
