3 out of 5 stars a little boring, didn't enjoy this one much .......2007-02-06

Tokyo 2040 is not surprisingly another futuristic anime with a take on mecha, this time in the form of very slim robotic armor. The characters are likeable enough, with the heroine unusually having a normal voice instead of the hysterical school girl thing.

the animation itself is good but again, with many other animes iv seen, it doesn't motivate me to watch the entire series. not much happens in each episode, the futuristic setting can get kinda dull.

buy it if you want, you never know, it may pick up after the first 4 episodes.

5 out of 5 stars An EXCELLENT Anime Series!.......2005-02-07

BGC 2040 is an excellent anime series.....

The plot is thought-provoking and every characer is explored regarding their goals, inner desires, etc. The action is good, and the character design excellent!

Highly recommended!

Tokyo, 2040 AD. After a great earthquake several years ago, the city has been rebuilt larger and brighter than ever thanks to the humanoid robotic constructs known as "boomers", created by the gigantic GENOM corporation. But there have been problems... sometimes, the boomers go "rogue", mutating into horrifying biomechanical constructs that wreak serious havoc and destruction wherever they appear. The Advanced Police, or AD Police as they are more commonly known, deploys the force of a small urban army to protect the citizens of Tokyo from these rogues, but even with heavy gear like their advanced "K-suits" (mechanised suits of powered combat armour) they are hard pressed...

But rumours say that another force is at work in the city... a team of armoured figures calling itself the Knight Sabers has been observed at several rogue boomer incidents, and has taken down these blood-crazed creatures with powerful weapons and incredible agility. And so it is that when Lina Yamazaki is caught in one of these incidents, and is rescued by one of the Sabers, she is determined to track them down and join them, any way it takes. But she has little idea what she is really letting herself in for...

BGC was one of the first big anime series to make it over to western culture, and even though it was never completed it is still remembered as one of the best animated series ever made. This retelling of the story is brought out in 26 parts by AD Vision, and does not disappoint. Many of the characters are thoroughly reworked, but not necessarily for the worse; they have depth and personality superior to most TV shows and the voice actresses do a good job conveying exactly how our heroines feel at any point. This is not a cheap cash-in production by any means.

The DVD is a fairly good buy, with the first four episodes and a few character bio's the amount of content is not going to blow you away, but the show is top notch and when compared in quality and value to VHS there is absolutely no contest, DVD is the way to go if you love anime. The episodes are strong and the show makes a brilliant start; if these don't get you hooked fairly quickly, it never will. And the picture and sound quality is of the high standards you would expect of any fairly new series, offering a crisp and comfortable experiance whatever your setup.

Overall I have to give this DVD Four Stars. The only reason it doesn't get five is that despite being a very good, well-realised, entertaining, thought-provoking series, it's not ground-breaking, and since the debut of shows like "Noir" those goalposts have just edged that little bit higher... A good release, if you want to try out anime, this is a good place to begin. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Kendalls Bubblegum Crisis 2040 review.......2003-06-20

The series begins in MegaTokyo of the year 2032, where much of the city has recently been destroyed by the earthquake of 2025. In the process of rebuilding the city, the Genom corporation introduced robots called Boomers to help construction. Boomer technology is essentially a combination of robotics, cybernetics and artificial intelligence in human form. Doctor Stingray created the boomers for Genom in a secret lab underground Tokyo, and Boomers are now a major segment of the worldwide manual labour and military hardware market.

In reality, Genom is far from the saviour of the world that they would project themselves to be. Genom's development of military boomers, and their continuing program of controlling the global economy and government poses a threat to the very future of humanity. In response, Doctor Stingray's daughter Sylia, formed the Knight Sabers to resist their plans and also help combat the occurance of mad Boomers, in ways that the police and world governments could not.

5 out of 5 stars Bubblwgum Crisis 2040.......2003-06-18

I was wary first of all as I've never seen this remake before. But when I did watch it I found out that it is really good. It still isn't close to the original work in comparisson. The makers of this remake went with a different setting. In the original you get to know the characters as the seris goes on. In this on it show the other side of people's reactions to the Knight Sabers. At the begining you are introduced to one character, Linna, and her desire to join the knight Sabers. The first DVD is centred around her and her arrival in Tokyo.
If you were a fan of the original and its songs you may or may not like this. The new songs are mainly Rock, and are not in the same league as the originals. It has on the other hand an interesting storyline.
A good anime to watch.

    Four Little Girls [1997]

    Amazon.co.uk Review

There are many remarkable things about Four Little Girls, Spike Lee's first foray into the documentary format. This striking, beautifully realised film has one thing in common with those of Ken Burns: the major event in this documentary is not seen on camera. Except for four quick glimpses of black-and-white autopsy photos, the picture stays clear from the bombing itself. Lee remains with the faces, the girls' friends, families, and the historic figures of the era. They've all grown up since the bombing but their memories haven't faded. The vital facts of the case are certainly here: the troubled history of Birmingham, Alabama, the court proceedings, friends' last contact with the girls. What touches us deeper, though, are those witnesses telling us of living through the core era of segregation and bigotry: a father explaining to his child why she can't have a sandwich in a cafeteria and a woman offering up tears of past events. There's even an interview with George Wallace, the prince of segregation, that belongs in a David Lynch feature. Lee's film asserts that the bombing energised the civil rights movement and when the voice of America, Walter Cronkite, echoes those sentiments, you believe he may have it right. --Doug Thomas
