Metal Mayhem !!!.......2003-11-06
But rumours say that another force is at work in the city... a team of armoured figures calling itself the Knight Sabers has been observed at several rogue boomer incidents, and has taken down these blood-crazed creatures with powerful weapons and incredible agility. And so it is that when Lina Yamazaki is caught in one of these incidents, and is rescued by one of the Sabers, she is determined to track them down and join them, any way it takes. But she has little idea what she is really letting herself in for...
BGC was one of the first big anime series to make it over to western culture, and even though it was never completed it is still remembered as one of the best animated series ever made. This retelling of the story is brought out in 26 parts by AD Vision, and does not disappoint. Many of the characters are thoroughly reworked, but not necessarily for the worse; they have depth and personality superior to most TV shows and the voice actresses do a good job conveying exactly how our heroines feel at any point. This is not a cheap cash-in production by any means.
The DVD is a fairly good buy, with the first four episodes and a few character bio's the amount of content is not going to blow you away, but the show is top notch and when compared in quality and value to VHS there is absolutely no contest, DVD is the way to go if you love anime. The episodes are strong and the show makes a brilliant start; if these don't get you hooked fairly quickly, it never will. And the picture and sound quality is of the high standards you would expect of any fairly new series, offering a crisp and comfortable experiance whatever your setup.
Overall I have to give this DVD Four Stars. The only reason it doesn't get five is that despite being a very good, well-realised, entertaining, thought-provoking series, it's not ground-breaking, and since the debut of shows like "Noir" those goalposts have just edged that little bit higher... A good release, if you want to try out anime, this is a good place to begin. Enjoy!
Kendalls Bubblegum Crisis 2040 review.......2003-06-20
In reality, Genom is far from the saviour of the world that they would project themselves to be. Genom's development of military boomers, and their continuing program of controlling the global economy and government poses a threat to the very future of humanity. In response, Doctor Stingray's daughter Sylia, formed the Knight Sabers to resist their plans and also help combat the occurance of mad Boomers, in ways that the police and world governments could not.

Four Little Girls [1997]

Amazon.co.uk Review
There are many remarkable things about Four Little Girls, Spike Lee's first foray into the documentary format. This striking, beautifully realised film has one thing in common with those of Ken Burns: the major event in this documentary is not seen on camera. Except for four quick glimpses of black-and-white autopsy photos, the picture stays clear from the bombing itself. Lee remains with the faces, the girls' friends, families, and the historic figures of the era. They've all grown up since the bombing but their memories haven't faded. The vital facts of the case are certainly here: the troubled history of Birmingham, Alabama, the court proceedings, friends' last contact with the girls. What touches us deeper, though, are those witnesses telling us of living through the core era of segregation and bigotry: a father explaining to his child why she can't have a sandwich in a cafeteria and a woman offering up tears of past events. There's even an interview with George Wallace, the prince of segregation, that belongs in a David Lynch feature. Lee's film asserts that the bombing energised the civil rights movement and when the voice of America, Walter Cronkite, echoes those sentiments, you believe he may have it right. --Doug Thomas
