        4 out of 5 stars It's a mad, mad, mad "The World".......2004-09-26

I must admit that I have certain bias towards the Dot-Hack series and so was going to say I liked this DVD before I even watched any of it. However, I'll try to give a fair opinion.

There is an inherent problem with watching the Dot-Hack series, and that is how much are you supposed to know before watching it. Dot-Hack was first a computer game. However, the SIGN series is set before the events in the playstation game, but assumes that you know something about the game. This can cause problems because this story is not stand-alone; the games, the graphic novels and the DVDs are all inter-related. This DVD is not something you just pick up and watch.

The other thing about this anime is that there is a HUGE amount of discussion. It's nothing like your typical cartoon that would have action all the way. A good majority of each episode consists of many conversations between different characters all trying to achieve different aims. If it wasn't for the fact that all these talks take place "within the game" where the players are represented by their characters, what the anime would really show are a mixed bunch of computer players sitting in front of their computers, talking through microphones. In this respect, some will find it very dull.

What makes it appealing is the underlying mystery: What is happening in "The World"? Who is Tsukasa? And what happened to him? What is the Key of the Twilight? All the characters want answers, but whereas in a computer game, getting such answers would involve just beating up some end-of-level boss, they show answers being gained by talking with others and cooperation. It does make this a kind of animated soap opera more than anything, but unlike normal soap operas it is set inside a computer-generated world.

Collect this if your a fan because all the chapters of the game hasn't been released yet (at time of writing, the third game is just released), so this DVD will give more insights to the game. Furthermore, characters in this DVD will make an appearance in the later games.
