Make friends with this DVD!.......2006-06-04

Things are getting really good with the addition of the three original starter Pokémon, Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle! Each Pokémon gets an episode dedicated to themselves and, fortuitously enough, the three episodes in question just so happened to fit the 3-episodes-each pattern of the first season DVDs! The episodes are:

-Bulbasaur and the Hidden Village: On the way to Vermillion City, Ash and friends come across an Oddish. When she tries to capture it, though, Misty is stopped by a surly Bulbasaur. Bulbasaur seems to be stopping the young trainers from going somewhere- it turns out it is guarding a secret village. Of course, the secret isn't a secret for much longer with Team Rocket hot on Ash's tail. This is a great action-packed episode and is a fine introduction to everyone's favourite surly, burly Grass-type!

-Charmander the Stray Pokémon: This episode is the most heartfelt of the three as Ash and co encounter a Charmander that has been abandoned on a rock by its cruel-hearted trainer Damien, with Charmander refusing to budge. When a huge rainstorm hits, the gang realise Charmander is in trouble- if the flame on its tail goes out, it'll die. With a lot of feeling behind it, this episode is one of the more gentle ones from the first season and the ending definitely provides a "feel good" moment.

-Here comes the Squirtle Squad!: If Bulbasaur's episode provided the action and Charmander's provided the emotion, then Squirtle definitely gets the episode with the humour! Ash and his friends come across a village that is being hassled by a group of mischevious Pokémon, the Squirtle Squad! The Squad form an alliance with Team Rocket and soon manage to capture Brock, Misty and Pikachu. With Pikachu seriously injured, however, Ash must head into town to collect a Super Potion. On the way, though it is revealed that Team Rocket don't intend to hold up their alliance with the Squirtle Squad. While there's a little bit of emotion on show here, the main feature of this episode is the comedy. There's plenty of stuff to laugh at, in particular the scene where the Squirtle Squad capture Team Rocket before Meowth convinces the two to join up.

This DVD is a perfect mix with the first episode having plenty of action, the second being full of emotion and the third being packed with comedy moments. Add to that the overall quality of the episodes and you have a truly brilliant package.
