"..the sweetest lump-a sugar that i've ever seen!".......2007-03-03
my title (above) are lyrics from just ONE of the fabulously catchy and down right silly tunes featured in Cry Baby!!
This movie is jam-packed with madness, funny characters, and a sexy toe-tapping turn from Mr. Johnny Depp!!!
you'll love it wheteher you're 8 or 80...fact: John waters is off his head!!!, but thats what makes this energetic film spark!!
With plenty of electrifying songs and an adorably funny performance by Depp you'll be enthralled throughout!!(i know i was!)
sweet and charming musical!! (Johnny only mimes in this :( but he will sing for real in Burton's 'Sweeney Todd' adaptation!!!)
King Cry Baby.......2006-09-11
This film is superb. It's trashy, tacky and loads of fun.
Starring Johnny Depp, this musical is very funny and has some catchy tunes. 'Please Mr Jailor' is a great track, as they all are. Johnny Depp plays deliquent Wade 'Cry Baby' Walker, and gleefully makes fun of his then teen idol persona. The great thing about this film is that it manages to be so adorable and cute and utterly sexy at the same time. It's fun to watch, the performances are superb, and the songs are catchy.
The dvd also includes a great commentary by Director John Waters and a featurette including interviews with the cast. A must have for anyone who likes Johnny Depp, musicals (although I don't generally like them, but I love this), and fun, humourous films.
5/5
brilliant.......2006-05-29
grease west side story hairspray jailhouse rock this film has got them all.the songs and the acting are all first class.john waters has come up with one of his best films .by the way clock the face on hatchet face.
They finally released it on DVD!.......2006-04-21
Johnny Depp was originally a teen heartthrob on Beverley Hills 9112 (or whatever the hell it was called). This was a lame yet very popular teen series set in a trendy high school. Obviously nobody on a show like that ever becomes a bona fide film star, right?
Along came John Waters, a director of really gross b-movies starring obese drag queen Divine.
He wanted to give Depp a try, and cast him in this musical extravaganza, in which he basically plays the a James Dean/Elvis type character.
Also notable for a stunning performance by Punk rock god Iggy Pop, playing Ricki Lakes dad.
You'll laugh until you cry, baby!
You swapped me? For a Milk Maid?!!!.......2006-02-03
This is a great film one of the best Johnny Depp has ever done.
Its kind of a skit of Grease but also of society being petty about stuff that doesn't matter (squares) and thinking teenage pregnancy is great (drapes).
The good girl decides she's fed up being good and catches the eye of Cry baby Walker, a "juvenile delinquent", he invites her to come see him sing and then impresses her Grandma by almost causing a car accident. After a slight fight which the squares started Cry Baby ends up in jail and because of a slight mis representation of the truth Alison thinks he's betrayed her. The film is cringe worthily funny but also gives important lessons in life, such as 'never follow a rat'.
I'm not much of a Depp fan but this film hits the all time favourites for all the girls in my family, definitely get this film. And its got Rickie Lake in it - its odd but she always seems to play poor people in films.

The Water Babies tells the story of Tom, a chimney sweep who gets framed for theft in 1850s England. Even though a young girl named Ellie knows the real thieves' identities and tries to clear Tom's name, Tom's desperate escape run lands him right in the middle of Dead Man's Pool. Assumed to have met certain death, Tom gets sucked into a magical underwater world. Tom befriends the creatures he meets beneath the sea, and they accompany him on a journey to the land of Water Babies, where he intends to ask the all-powerful Cracken to help him return to the world above the water. However, when Tom finally does manage to return to land, life is far from idyllic as he must set out clear his name and trap the real thieves.
Many adults possess fond memories of seeing this 1978 movie as children. The land portions of this musical feature live-action footage, while the water sequence is fully animated. To a fresh, modern audience, the abrupt change from one format to the other is somewhat disconcerting, as is the choppy, older animation style. The story, based on the classic children's book of the same name by Charles Kingsley, is an intriguing look at both Victorian culture and the fantasy world. (Ages 4-8) --Tami Horiuchi, Amazon.com

A good film but nothing like the book.......2002-12-20
I have the water babies since i was a verry little girl, and the story has always intrigued me. It's a great childrens film that i feel adults can also enjoy. Just one point, if you really enjoyed the film i would recommened you not to read the book. I have read it recently thanks to this film, but i discovered from the offset that the film is extremely different to the book and i cannot watch the film in the same light ever again. Overall a great film all the family will enjoy and watch over and over again.
wow.......2000-05-24
This is only the best childrens video that I have ever watched. The plot is disney, the songs are fantastic and I used to watch it every weekkend with my sister before my Mum and Dad got up! Highly recomended!

HILARIOUS!.......2007-08-20
Saw this at the NFT last week and saw john waters live masterclass afterwards which was amazing! i laughed for the full two hours. its part stand up, part documentary, part retrospective but ALL of it is HILARIOUS!
i wont ruin any of the lines in the movie but my favourite in the post movie masterclass was "Myra Hindley got longer just because she didnt have her roots done..." classic waters.
John Waters does standup - and oh it's funny!!.......2007-08-17
I had the good fortune to see this at the NFT, and meet Mr Waters afterwards, so perhaps that influences me - but I though this was *really* good!
I only know a couple of his films well (Hairspray, Cecil B Demented) but that didn't matter (I'm aware of Pink Flamingos and Divine, but I'm no big fan) - but this is excellent! You don't need to know all his films - he's just such a good storyteller!

Great!.......2007-07-01
This is a great movie.
The music is brilliant, I think that "Guitar girl" needs to wash her ears out.
Ignore her review, the reason I say that is because she doesn't even realise that this is meant to be a funny and corny movie.
And it is funny.
Hilarious!!!.......2007-01-29
I love Johnny Depp and he is absolutely gorgeous as ever in this early film but I have to say i was surprised that he took part in this film because its SO not his style, I thought he started out in some cool indie film not a cheap grease knock off!!! I actually had to laugh out loud at most of it because it seemed like one big joke! Awful songs and the dancing....! SHOCKING! Not at all what I was expecting!!!
AWESOME.......2005-11-13
Jonny Depp in his pants? ROCK ON! I started watching this in VHS when I was about 9 years old, I know the film word for word, action for action, and I love it. Always have. I simply can't wait for it to come out on DVD! I normally hate "musicals" but this is in a league of it's own.
Cry Baby, Cry Baby, Cry Babyyyy!!!.......2005-08-20
I think everyone should buy this film, its excelent! The music is great, and the acting is brilliant! Jonny depp is the most amazing actor, and this shows him in his earlier stages of acting!
King Cry-Baby!.......2005-07-15
If you're a fan of musicals, then this is a must-see or must-buy for your collection.
Filled with fun songs, this film is cleverly done.
When leader of the Drapes, Cry-Baby (Johnny Depp) falls for the perfect square, he'll do anything to get her. Depp brings across a fantastic performance along with co-stars Ricky Lake and Iggy Pop.
With catchy tunes such as 'King Cry-Baby' and 'Please, Mr Jailer', you'll soon be singing along!
A definite must-see movie, for all fans of Johnny Depp. 10/10.
Definately my favourite movie, the soundtrack is pretty good too!

Amazon.co.uk Review
The writing-directing team of Charles Shyer and Nancy Meyers (Father of the Bride) made this sweet satire about a high-powered yuppie executive (Diane Keaton) who unexpectedly becomes a mom and finds she can't successfully integrate the role into her busy life. Typical of the Shyer-Meyers films prior to Myers taking the director's reins on the wonderful Parent Trap, Baby Boom is a little wooden and more sentimental than genuine. But there are entertaining moments, for sure, and Keaton is a delight. --Tom Keogh

soooo sweet!.......2006-03-19
its a film that really captures you. it makes you want to go 'bless' and is an adorable film. it may be bad fashion sense but it is great!!!
Well Worth a Look.......2005-09-29
I adore this movie, not only is it a Diane Keaton movie, which guarantees a leading actress with flare, charisma and talent, but there is also the endearing Elizabeth, the baby who ends up on Keaton's doorstep. This movie is worth seeing just for the scene where Elizabeth gets a cold and Keaton has to take a valium just to take the baby's temperature!
This movie shows that women can have it all, not just one choice or the other, even if it means changing house, state and men to get it.
This film is well worth seeing just for the final scene, it always makes me cry, Elizabeth turns to Keaton and says her first word, "Mama", it gets me every time....
Average but dated film on a miserable DVD.......2002-08-21
I always used to like this film even though I'm a man! Having purchased this recently on DVD however, I have to say everything about it now is terribly dated and somehow too sentimental for my liking. I know its a comedy but it would have helped if the whole scenario had been a little more believable.
Keaton is still great though and its also good to see James Spader playing a young business up-start.
The DVD from MGM however is very poor. Apart from the complete lack of special features (just a trailer) the picture is worse than an old VHS tape whilst the sounds hardly any better. Where did they get this print from? It looks like its been left out in the sun too long!
Poor disc. Average movie.
Favourite Film of All Time.......2002-08-09
This film is my absoulute favourite. I have watched it so many times I know all the words - sad, I know. It's definately a film for anyone who likes a bit of sentimentality and cheese and is watchable repeatedly, so worth getting on DVD. Probably a girls film really.
The story is about the savvy buisiness woman (Diane Keaton) who inherits a distant relatives baby and has to change her life to accomodate her. It's got a cheezy happy ending which always cheers me up!
Also stars Sam Shepard (Pelican Brief), Harold Ramis (Spengler - Ghostbusters), James Spader (Stargate), Pat Hingle (Commisioner Gordon - Batman) and Sam Wanamaker.
Faultless performance of Diane Keaton........2000-11-20
It is difficult to put a finger on the reason why this film works and is so entertaining - and the only factor I can put it down to is the faultless performance of Diane Keaton in a role in which she takes the persona which she created in "Annie Hall" a few stages further. It may also have something to do with the fact that it never really seems to attempt to take itself seriously, lapsing into pure modern-day fantasy after the initial shock in which high-powered yuppie executive Keaton "inherits" her late sister's baby daughter. Thereafter, everything falls so perfectly into place for Keaton - after quitting her job, she has sufficient funds to buy a huge Vermont estate - she falls in love with the only under-50 man who appears to live in her community and who also happens to have an affinity for the child - she founds a cottage business which becomes a multi-million dollar concern during the course of only a few months. The impression which the picture gives you at the outset that it was to deliver some profound message about the role of women and motherhood in modern society is never fulfilled, simply because the fantasy takes over so completely from what one had assumed to be a story to be based in the real world, and the attempt at moralising at the end falls flat on its face in the light of all that has happened before. But perhaps, this is expecting too much from the picture - if it had dealt with reality, it wouldn't have been half as entertaining and wouldn't have given free rein to all of Keaton's acting talents.
