Amazon.co.uk Reviews

Hoodwinked fuses the classic fairy tale of Little Red Riding Hood with the crisscrossing storylines of film noir--pretty ambitious stuff for a computer-animated cartoon. The police cordon off Grandma's cottage and an amphibious version of William Powell named Nicky Flippers (voiced by David Ogden Stiers, M*A*S*H) begins interrogating the suspects: A Little Red in bell-bottoms (Anne Hathaway, Ella Enchanted), a Wolf turned investigative journalist (Patrick Warburton, The Woman Chaser), a snow-boarding Granny (Glenn Close, 101 Dalmatians), and a dimwitted would-be Woodsman (Jim Belushi, Curly Sue), each of whom have very different reasons for ending up in that cottage living room. The visual style of Hoodwinked mixes a clunky, video-game look with an homage to the stop-motion puppetry of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and other Rankin-Bass holiday specials. While sometimes awkward, there are also moments of surreal beauty, such as when a depressed Red wanders through a field of blue and red flowers--and moments of lunatic comedy, such as the Schnitzel song, which is irresistibly bizarre. The Shrek-style pop-culture references grow annoying, but the left-field goofiness of a yodeling goat points toward a far more distinct and delightful comic world. Also featuring the voices of Anthony Anderson (Kangaroo Jack), rapper Xzibit, and an especially witty turn by Andy Dick (NewsRadio) as a deceptively cute bunny rabbit. --Bret Fetzer

1 out of 5 stars Don't Be Hoodwinked.......2008-02-14

I enjoyed the trailer to this film and went out and bought the DVD. The animation leaves a lot to be desired and the film is flat and lacks the punch and pace we have all come to expect from films such as Toy Story, Shrek, Monsters Inc, Flushed Away etc. The idea behind the story was a good one but you are left with the feeling that it could have been so much better and a real opportunity has been missed.

3 out of 5 stars Watchable cartoon.......2008-01-06

Good cartoon for watching on a cold rainy day. Not as good as Shrek 1 & 2, but still very watchable.

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2007-09-30

It took a long time before I finally bought this dvd for my daughter. Mainly because I hadn't heard a lot about it.
However, after seeing it advertised on another dvd, my daughter (5) asked me if she could have it and so I bought it for her birthday.
I must say the entire family sat around to watch and no one was dissapointed. Even my dad who is 54 loved it!
The plot is clevely done and the characters are hilarious, especially Granny (aka triple G.)
In all, I would highly recommend this film to anyone. It is not as hiped as movies such as Shrek and Flushed Away, but it is equally as good.

3 out of 5 stars Average film - still very watchable!.......2007-09-05

Hoodwinked is a very watchable film, but it is nothing exceptional. Everything about it is good, but with some of the recent offerings from Pixar and Disney setting the standard of excellence, this film doesn't quite make it - it's not quite clever enough. However, that being said the re-telling of the Red Riding Hood story from the point of view of each of the girl in question, her granny, the woodsman and the wolf and seeing how the stories seem to be totally incompatible and yet fit together perfectly is very funny, with a few moments that are inspired.
I would recommend this film to anyone with children of Primary School Age, as it will almost certainly fill a rainy afternoon with few complaints.

3 out of 5 stars Just misses being good.......2007-08-17

The first problem is with the quality of animation. Compared to, say, Shrek, the graphics are quite basic and clumsy. Secondly, the story is clever but poorly scripted, relying far too much on American "in" jokes and failing to develop any feel for the characters. The end titles indicate that production and direction was pretty much a two-man show so perhaps this explains the narrowness of the humour. A bigger budget could have made this a memorable film.

5 out of 5 stars Clean animated comedy.......2006-09-19

A light-hearted animated film set in the woods at the bottom of some mountains. People and creatures with varying levels of intelligence (the bear and the little squirrel thing are my favourites) supply the laughs and of course progress the story at a good pace.

I think this film is suitable for the majority of people. I can't understand why it hasn't been distributed more widely.
