Best Disney film ever made (well in my opinion anyway) .......2007-11-06
Ever since I first saw Pocahontas when it first came out, I knew that Disney were onto a winner. Yes,I admit it's not historically accurate but it's only a Disney film designed for a bit of fun! The songs however, are the making of this film with highlights including the beautiful 'Colours of the Wind' and the very catchy 'Just around the River Bend'. If you have young children (or you just fancy a enjoyable watch yourself!), this film is a must buy. A lot of animated films may date with time but Pocahontas certainly won't! Top stuff.
Magical & innovative Walt Disney love story.......2006-09-16
I really enjoyed this production from Walt Disney. It is unique for Walt Disney in that the animation is based on a real person and story. The love that Pocahontas and John Smith have for each other is enough to bridge their different cultures.
The animation and the musical composition are of a very high calibre, with the 'Colours of the Wind' song being especially stirring. I also like 'If I never knew you' which, is a restored song in this Special Edition dvd. Furthermore, the voice acting is commendable throughout. The lovely Irene Bedard provides the voice talent for Pocahontas and big name actor Mel Gibson voices John Smith.
The movie is also especially funny in places with the animal characters of Meeko, Flit & Percy providing much of the humour. Wiggins is an interesting side character also worthy of note.
The movie ending is particularly powerful with Pocahontas casting herself over the prostrate John Smith to prevent her father from felling the love of her life. This dvd is crammed with special features that enhance your enjoyment of the main movie: an audio commentary, a veritable library of still images and fascinating featurettes amongst other things.
To conclude, a refreshing, uplifting animation that is enjoyable for all age ranges and a visual rendition that merits maximum marks.
Failed historical lesson but has its redeeming points.......2006-09-04
With Pocahontas as an ancestor, I saw this movie in grade school and then followed it up with mountains of reading and research when it first came out. Disney has been well known for their distortion of stories and tale, but that generally doesn't bother me. Beauty and the Beast is my favourite movie of all time even though it differs drastically from the original tale. Disney went too far, however, when they decided to tackle American history and then twist it for their means. A few being, the aging of Pocahontas to make her old enough for romance (she would have been 12 or 13), the supposed love affair with John Smith, and the entire political correctness of the story defile an important part of our history (ie. Jamestown the first permanent English settlement, and the peace that Pocahontas was able to bring between the Powhatan tribe and the Settlers - for a piece). I will not begin to even talk about Pocahontas 2's depiction of John Rolfe (her future husband in real life) as a bumbling idiot.
Historic unaccuracy aside though the movie does have its redeeming points.
1) Alan Meneken's score, like always, is phanomenal and stirs the soul. He really delivers with this one.
2) The animation is very good as well. A style slightly different than previous Disney films, the movie is a joy to watch strictly for the animation's sake.
Parents this is an enjoyable movie for both you and your children to watch. I would just suggest that you help them divide the fact from the fiction. It is also great learning tool for opening up a world to them ... encouraging them to go on a search for the truth even as they enjoy the DVD for it's entertainment's sake.
pocahontas.......2005-06-29
this film is awesome, not only is pocahuntas the best looking disney character ever but also the songs are so cool, like the colours of the wind one and the riverbend thing, ha, only rivaled in song terms by the lion king .
this film broke down barriers in cinema and showed people really how animated singalongs should be done although the lion king did that a little bit befor.
Epic, Colourful, Beautiful........2005-03-08
This is truly a Disney classic. With a wonderful story, breathtaking scenery and inspiring music, Pocahontas is a film I think everybody can enjoy. Based on the true story of Pocahontas, the film tells us of the sruggles faced by the Powatan Indians when their native land is invaded by English soldiers. Matters become more complicated when Pocahontas falls in love with Captain John Smith. What follows is an uplifting story of courage, bravery and acceptance. I think this film has some of the most wonderful settings ever seen in the cinema and this 2 disc DVD has some great extras. The Acadamy Award winning music, characters and story compliment eachother so well, I can't praise this film enough.
