Full of verve and wit Shrek is a computer-animated adaptation of William Steig's delightfully fractured fairy tale. Our title character (voiced by Mike Myers) is an agreeable enough ogre who wants to live his days in peace. When the diminutive Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow) evicts local fairy tale creatures (including the now-famous Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio and the Gingerbread Man), they settle in the ogre's swamp and Shrek wants answers from Farquaad. A quest of sorts starts for Shrek and his new pal, a talking donkey (Eddie Murphy), where battles have to be won and a princess (Cameron Diaz) must be rescued from a dragon lair in a thrilling action sequence. The story is stronger than most animated fare but it's the jokes that make Shrek a winner. The PG rating is stretched when Murphy and Myers hit their strides. The mild potty humour is fun enough for the 10-year-old but will never embarrass their parents. Shrek is never as warm and inspired as the Toy Story films, but the realistic computer animation and a rollicking soundtrack keeps the entertainment in fine form. Produced by DreamWorks, the film also takes several delicious stabs at its cross-town rival, Disney. --Doug Thomas, Amazon.com
On the DVD: DVD could have been invented to showcase Shrek's stunning computer animation--admirably served here by 16:9 anamorphic widescreen presentation--while the exuberant soundtrack comes alive in 5.1 Dolby Digital.
There are plenty of extras to choose from on this DVD, from The Tech of Shrek and fake Character Interviews to the amusing Swamp Karaoke Dance Party featuring the whole cast. However, none of these features have much depth, nor do they last long and it would be easy to feel slightly disappointed--were it not for the excellent Shrek's ReVoice Studio. This first-of-its-kind feature requires a computer running Microsoft Windows 98SE or higher, Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher, an Internet connection and a DVD-ROM drive. However, once the DVD-ROM is up and running, the instructions could not be clearer and within minutes the whole family will be dubbing their voices over favourite characters and scenes--rendering the other extras almost irrelevant.--Helen Baker

Shrek (2001) Review
Rating: *****
This is the first movie of the brilliant movie which is Shrek.
The characters in the movie start apart, however they start a friendship together as the movie develops. There is Shrek (Mike Myers), Fiona (Cameron Diaz) and Donkey (Eddie Murphy). Shrek is a fantasist movie for the family to view.
Shrek is a green ogre who lives on his own is a swamp. Fiona is a beautiful princess who is locked away in a castle watched by a big fire-breathing dragon, who stays there day and night, but Fiona has a secret. Donkey is a talking, singing and very funny donkey, who is going to be sold as a magical animal, but he runs away and finds Shrek.
Shrek has the voices of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz.
Mike Myers is the voice of Shrek and he has been in such films as Austin Powers. Eddie Murphy does the voice of Donkey and been is films such Daddy Day Care. Cameron Diaz does the voice of Fiona and she has been in such films as Charlie's Angels.
Shrek and Donkey go on a quest to save Fiona from wedding Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow) as if he marries her, he will be king.
There are also a lot of fairy tale characters in this movie form the three little pigs and the big bad wolf.
This absolutely brilliant movie which lasts for 89 minutes will have you laughing from start to finish.
This hilarious film is another of DreamWorks animations, so you are in for a treat.

Shrek is a great film for everyone. Kids will adore it and adults will love it as well. It has a great cast, with a fabulously witty story, and the right music at the right time. For its day (2001) the state of the art computer animation was brilliant.
The previous 100+ reviews will tell you everything else you need to know. So buy this and Shrek 2 and get Toy Story and Toy Story 2 and you'll have all the best computer animated classics to date.

"What kind of knight are you?".......2007-08-18
The answer to the question is that Shrek is one of a kind. Mike Myers is the voice behind the best-known ogre in the movie industry. Shrek lives in a secluded area of the forest, but when Lord Farquaad resolves that all the fairy creatures need to live in this area, Shrek's peace is seriously affected. Thus, he focuses on scaring everyone away, even though at heart he is a big teddy-bear. One day, he sees a regiment from the kingdom of Far Far Away capturing fairies. Lord Farquaad, the leader of the oppressors, thinks that the talking donkey deserves to be incarcerated, but Shrek cannot help himself and rescues the poor thing.
This is not the last Shrek and Farquaad will see of each other. The latter decides that he would like to marry Princess Fiona, but there is a small obstacle in the way. She is held hostage in a castle defended by a fierce dragon and many have succumbed in their rescue attempts. Therefore, Farquaad organizes a tournament to decide who should go to bring back his wife-to-be. You can take a guess as to who the lucky winner is.
This is not your typical fairy tale, and it is definitely intended for an audience a little more mature, but it is an enjoyable one. There is one word that defines this movie to the T: humor. The actors selected to give voice to the characters of Shrek (Myers), Lady Fionna (Cameron Diaz) and Donkey (Eddie Murphy) are perfect for their roles. The writers also did an excellent job in picking the jokes and the funny comments throughout the production are something to cherish.
There is also a wide selection of extra features in the two-disc DVD; including an area designated as Dreamwork Kids that allows you to select you favorite scenes, watch two music videos (Baha Men and Smash Mouth), and play interactive games and trivia. My favorite extra feature was the one that discusses the technical aspects of the animation, because this is one of the most amazing aspects of this film. Nowadays there are many examples of animation of this quality, but when "Shrek" first came out, it was one of a kind. Finally, the music completes the total package, since it blends perfectly with the different parts of the plot and it is catchy and enjoyable. Overall, a great effort that cannot be missed!

My only gripe is why the heck does Robin Hood have a French accent when the whole world knows he came from Nottingham?

Both of the hit animated movies in one package.

In Shrek 2, the newlywed Shrek and Princess Fiona are invited to Fiona's former kingdom, Far Far Away, to have their marriage blessed by Fiona's parents--which Shrek thinks is a bad, bad idea, and he's proved right: the parents are horrified by their daughter's transformation into an ogress, a fairy godmother wants her son Prince Charming to win Fiona, and a feline assassin is hired to get Shrek out of the way. The computer animation is more detailed than ever, but it's the acting that make the comedy work--in addition to the return of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz, Shrek 2 features the flexible voices of Julie Andrews, John Cleese and Antonio Banderas, plus Jennifer Saunders as the gleefully wicked fairy godmother. --Bret Fetzer

Really disappointing.......2007-10-08
I was hugely looking forward to watching these two so finally got them using the Amazon Rental thingy. People had been going on about how they weren't just for kids and what great films they were. Well, I'm sorry, but I just don't get it. They were both pretty dull. Thin plots, poor songs and musical numbers (apart from the last number in Shrek 2), annoying characters (in a more realistic film someone would have shot the Donkey ten minutes in).
Maybe I'm just an old grouch, but I fell asleep twice during the second one and the first wasn't much better.
Two Shreks in one.......2007-07-24
Shrek is a big green ogre who is furious when the swamp where he lives is made into a reservation for magical creatures. He agrees to go on a quest to rescue beautiful Princess Fiona in return for getting his swap back again. When he rescues the Princess, though, he finds himself falling in love with her, although his job is to take her back to be married to obnoxious Lord Farquaad. Fiona, however, has a mind of her own, and a secret which may make a difference to all their futures. This is a delightful film, very funny, with good characters and a satisfyingly fesity heroine.
In the sequel 'Shrek 2' Fiona and Shrek go to visit Fiona's parents, the King and Queen of Faraway, who are not very happy with their daughter's choice of bridegroom. An evil Fairy Godmother is also determined to destroy their happiness. I found the sequel much less interesting than the first film, it is very sentimental and has far too much romance and not nearly enough action. Shrek is good fun, but this one is a bit dull by comparison.
brilliant modern-day ogretale.......2007-06-06
i found all three movies hilarious, i'm not too keen on animated films but i make an acception for shreck cos, unlike most things aimed at children, it doesn't suck
cool movie(s), like pirates of the caribbean, i hope the saga goes on and on

Brilliant.......2005-08-20
These movies Shrek and Shrek2 sum up to one word, Brilliance. You can not get bored of watching these movies and if you have a low budget it is worth buying. There is also far far away idol which is the equivalant to pop idol and you can vote for your best act. There isn't anything in the movies I do not like and is compatible for kids and adults.

Disgusted at the dvd/video!.......2006-03-01
This is pathetic! It's only 15 minutes long! it's a story from a theme park ride and it's ruining the ride! i'm absolutely disgusted at this film and is a waste of money!!!!!!! do not get a terrible rip off!
3D is 1D less than 4D..........2004-11-27
The 3D Shrek story is a nice little inclusion in the Shrek continuity; kids of all ages (including the odd 30-something!) will love it. A word of warning though - if you've not yet been to Shrek-4D at Universal in Orlando, but you're hoping to go, don't play this element as it is what you'll see there but without the moving seats, air & water effects etc. That said, Shrek 4D isn't worth queuing more than 30 minutes for - either get a hotel room at the park (which gives priority entry to the shows) or just get this DVD, rig up a hairdryer under the couch and have someone flick water at you on cue...
Good value for money.......2004-06-23
Well worth it if you haven't already got the 1st film.
I am a coaster enthusiast and I bought this because the 3d short film included is the 4d shrek film shown in the universal studios theme parks accross the world.
Now in the theme parks it is watched on a large cinema size screen and as a result the 3d effect works very well. At home it works surprisingly well but doesn't of course compare to seeing it on a big screen.
So definately buy it if you have a video projector (some lucky people do) and invite your friends round for a scare! if not then bare in mind you need to sit near the screen to see the effect (which still does work pretty well).
So overall i would say definately if you haven't got the original buy it, if you have got the original, how much do you like theme parks and 3d films ?!
Mixed Feelings.......2004-06-22
This DVD contains both the original Shrek film, and a new 15 minute feature in 3D.
Shrek, on its own gets 5 stars. It is a truly amazing film, funny to people of all ages. The animation is beautiful, the voices great (my favourite is by far Donkey, voiced by Eddie Murphy). If you havn't seen this film then buy this DVD with no doubts, even if its just for the main film.
The additional disc, Shrek 3D is different. Its a 3D feature lasting about 15 minutes (the kind where u wear those red and blue glasses... 4 pairs supplied). There is very little in the way of a story, and the main plot is all written on the back of the box. It seems like the feature is an excuse to play around with 3d, rather than a good feature enhanced with 3d. Despite all this, it is still quite good. The 3d animation is very good, and things do seem to be sticking out of your TV screen. However, after 15 minutes of viewing my eyes really hurt. There is an option on it to play it in standard animation, without the 3d, but I don't really see the point in this, as without the gimmick of the 3D it isn't really that great.
On the whole, if you don't own shrek already, get this because u get the original film and the new feature for the same price as just the original. If you already own Shrek, I don't think that paying nearly 15 quid for just the 15 minutes is worth it, but if you do feel that you want everything to do with shrek, then go for it,

Superb.......2008-02-13
Shrek is a great film for everyone. Kids will adore it and adults will love it as well. It has a great cast, with a fabulously witty story, and the right music at the right time. For its day (2001) the state of the art computer animation was brilliant.
The previous 100+ reviews will tell you everything else you need to know. So buy this and Shrek 2 and get Toy Story and Toy Story 2 and you'll have all the best computer animated classics to date.
Simply faultless.
My two-year-old's favourite film.......2007-07-31
My son loves this film and insists on watching it every day - at least once a day!
My only gripe is why the heck does Robin Hood have a French accent when the whole world knows he came from Nottingham?
SHREK, ROCKS!!.......2007-04-03
However, once the DVD-ROM is up and running, the instructions could not be clearer and within minutes the whole family will be dubbing their voices over favourite characters and scenes--rendering the other extras almost irrelevant
