Amazon.co.uk Review
The Emperor's New Groove was originally developed as an epic called Kingdom of the Sun and lost scale and most of Sting's song score (some of which can be heard on the soundtrack) on its way to the screen. The end result is the lightest Disney film in many a moon, a joyous romp akin to Aladdin in its quotient of laughs for children and adults. The original story centres on the spoiled teenage emperor Kuzco (David Spade), who enjoys getting the best of his Aztecan subjects. When he fires Yzma (Eartha Kitt), his evil sorceress, she seeks revenge and turns Kuzco into a llama with the help of Kronk, her hunk of the month (Patrick Warburton). Alone in the jungle, the talking llama is befriended by Pacha (John Goodman), who has just been told to vacate his pastoral home by the human Kuzco. What's an ego to do? That's pretty much the story and the characters--simple, direct, fun--a Disney film on a diet. For any fan of the acidic humour of Spade, this is essential viewing. As narrator of his tale, Kuzco uses a sarcastic tone to keep the story jumping with plenty of fun asides (he even "stops" the film at one point to make sure you know the story is about him). Even better is character actor Warburton (Elaine's stuck-up boyfriend on Seinfeld), who steals every scene as the dim-witted, but oh-so-likable Kronk. There's even a delicious Tom Jones number that starts the film off with a bang. --Doug Thomas, Amazon.com

This is one of my favourite films EVER! You can't get bored of it. There are jokes throughout the movie that are aimed more for an adult audience than at kids - making it the BEST animated film for grown up disney lovers! It's a classic - Walt Disney would be proud!
Witty and original.......2007-06-24
"The Emperor's New Groove" is a little different to 'classic' Disney animated films. It's genuinely funny, for both adults and children, of course. The artwork is also zippy and fun - while the buildings lack the beauty of those in Dreamworks' "Road to El Dorado", it's a very stylistically-different film, where visual jokes play just as much a part as the spoken ones. Particular highlights are Eartha Kitt's voicing of the villain, Yzma - she does a *wonderful* job in breathing life into a character who could otherwise be embarrassingly over the top - as well as Kronk, Yzma's sidekick. Kronk, like Meg from Disney's "Hercules", is a villain who isn't really a villain: as the DVD featurette points out, he just got in with the wrong crowd. Together, the two of them are absolutely hilarious and are worth buying the film for alone.
In spite of all these compliments, there's always something that holds me back from rating this film too highly. Yes, it's clever, and was definitely underrated when released in the cinemas, but I think the problem is that it lacks the heart that most people have come to associate with Disney. There are moments here and there, but even so the jokes win the day on this production. I also think the decision to give the film the title it has was a little bizarre; "The Emperor's New Groove" has very little in common with "The Emperor's New Clothes", and I know that I was expecting something a little different the first time I watched this.
The extras for this DVD are somewhat limited. There's a disappointingly-short film about the research trip to Peru, as well as a rather earnest introduction to creating 3D visual effects. Rather better than these is the voice-casting featurette, which is interesting and informative, but other than that there really isn't much - presumably the special edition DVD is more impressive.
Is it really a Disney classic? It's certainly one of the better films to come out of the studio in the last ten years - not as good as "Mulan", but a little better than "Tarzan". Certainly worth seeing, especially if you're a Disney fan already - I was never bored and it's a lot of fun!
My favorite Disney film!!!!!!!!.......2007-04-29
This is a great movie. It's great for people of all ages Yzma and Kronk are the best characters because they are both hilarious. I have watched the DVD so many times it's definatly a film u will not get tired of watching. GREAT MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fun family film!.......2007-04-06
My kids love this, and its a great movie for all the family to watch together. It has a nice storyline and plenty of humour thrown in too, some of it aimed at the parents as it went straight over my kids heads. They must have watched this a dozen times, but it still gets chosen as the family film to watch on rainy Sundays!
Buy it, you wont regret it!
