The Lion King Special Edition [1994]

Amazon.co.uk Review

Disney's 1994 animated feature, The Lion King, was a huge smash in cinemas and continues to enjoy life in an acclaimed stage production. The story finds a lion cub, son of a king, sent into exile after his father is deposed by a jealous uncle. The little hero finds his way into the "circle of life" with some new friends and eventually comes back to reclaim his proper place. Characters are very strong, vocal performances by the likes of Jeremy Irons, Nathan Lane and Whoopi Goldberg are terrific, the jokes are aimed as much (if not more) at adults than kids, the animation is sometimes breathtaking and the songs from Tim Rice and Elton John, accompanied by a colourful score, are more palatable than in many recent Disney features. --Tom Keogh

On the DVD: The Lion King Special Edition is a superb restoration: take a look at the serviceable but dull film clips incorporated in the plethora of extras and compare them to the vivid gorgeousness of the film presentation. This special edition also adds a 90-second song ("Morning Report") that originated in the lavish stage musical. To Disney's credit, the original theatrical version is also included, both restored and featuring two 5.1 soundtracks: Dolby Digital and a new Disney Enhanced Home Theater Mix, which does sound brighter. As with the Disney Platinum line, everything is thrown into the discs, except an outsider's voice (the rah-rahs of Disney grow tiresome at times). The excellent commentary from the directors and producer, originally on the laser disc, is hidden under the audio set-up menu.

The second disc is organised by 20-minute-ish "journeys" tackling the elements of story, music and so on, including good background on the awkward Shakespearean origins at Disney where it was referred as "Bamlet". The most interesting journey follows the landmark stage production, and the kids should be transfixed by shots of the real African wildlife in the animal journey. Three deleted segments are real curios, including an opening lyric for "Hakuna Matata". Most set-top DVD games are usually pretty thin (DVD-ROM is where it's at), but the Safari game is an exception--the kids should love the roaring animals (in 5.1 Surround, no less). One serious demerit is the needless and complicated second navigation system that is listed by continent but just shows the same features reordered. --Doug Thomas

5 out of 5 stars A DISNEY CLASSIC.......2007-11-13

Disney made another solid A in cinemas everywhere around the world in 1994 with "The Lion King," a very nice animated film.

It is about Simba, a young lion whose father was Mufasa, the original king of the Pride Lands. That opening scene where Rafiki broke open the gourd, made a mark on Simba's head with the juice and dust and lifted him towards the sun from Pride Rock is the most recognizable scene of the movie, because that's how it all began. As Simba had grown up, he had to learn about his issues in life, try to stay away from trouble (that scene where Mufasa and Simba had a long talk "SIMBA, I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED IN YOU, etc." TOTALLY taught Simba a lesson; after that was the whole "Look at the stars" thing), and later, as a wildebeest stampede, started by Scar, killed Simba's father, now Simba had to grow up all alone and try to figure this whole thing out all by himself.

Later, Simba was lost in the desert with vultures and stuff, and here, enter Timon and Pumbaa. This recognizable phrase, Hakuna Matata, started to change Simba's life, as well as moviegoers', forever! Then we see Simba, Pumbaa, and Timon (with his funny walk) walk across the log in the night, with Simba becoming an adult! Simba then had fallen in love with Nala, and later on, when Simba was worried, Rafiki had come to him, told Simba to look in the water, and Simba decided to return to Pride Rock to become king.

Pride Rock was a bad wasteland; how sad was that. Suddenly, Simba realized that Scar killed Mufasa, and so, they battled on Pride Rock with a fire below!!!!! Simba won, and all was restored, and that beginning scene? This time, with Simba and Nala, we see it again, and thus ends the movie.

"The Lion King" is a terrific film. It had memorable scenes, good lessons, and nothing but Disney Magic. I've seen this in the movies in '94 and the re-release in '95, we had the video for some time, and this played on the Old Disney Channel in the late 90s. Go watch it; I think your life will change forever.

5 out of 5 stars Who doesn't love The Lion King?.......2007-08-11

Ok, who honestly doesn't love the lion king? Im 14 and ive never stopped loving it since i was 2!

You never grow out of it, its such a classic! From the mischevious simba to the hilarious timon and pumba this movie is for all the family!

No matter how many times i watch it (and ive watched it alot of times!) i always cry when mufasa dies, always laugh at timon's jokes and sing-along with all the songs! I really just never get sick of it!

Its such a classic, a must have for anyone who loves disney and even if you dont you'll still love it! Buy it now!

5 out of 5 stars cant get better.......2004-02-05

we all know that the loin king is one of the best animations that is out today. and the special edition only makes that clearer. i am proud to say that this dvd is excelent and is able to offer people a hight rate of excitment. it has houres of extra fun and even a fe new songs that make it more injoyable to watch. this is def one for the family and adults alike. and im 17 and im cant wait for more in the lion king serice.

5 out of 5 stars A complete package........2003-12-22

A great solid Disney film, accompanied by toys. Bonus!

There is very little else to be said about the film other than very well animated, warm, emotional and fun. The songs catch on without being grating, despite the sugary content. The standard Good verses Evil plot is well played out.

If it got my 2 1/2 year-old engrossed in the actions of characters, it's got to be good! Plus when the film is over the 1" long toys of Simba, Mufasa, Scar, Timon, Pumbaa, and Banzai (a hyena), can be played with in the box, which folds out to form a jungle scene. You can even read the Storybook included as well.

For this price, including the extras, this is highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Wondeful to see it again............2003-12-03

The last time I saw The Lion King I was a little girl. Now, at the grand ole' age of 23 it still fills me with the same kind of emmotion that I had all those years ago.

However, as much as I love the film the extra's are a bit thin in actual information and are not as slick and stylish as some recent ones (such as Monsters Inc). For everyone who bought the speical edition of Beauty and the Beast, this will seem a let down on that front.

However, it is a very child friendly DVD, with lots of games and activities.

My favorite part is the international show reel, where they show you all the different languages the film has been shown in.

All in all a very good buy for the fanatically disney fan, but just don't be to disapointed on the extras.

5 out of 5 stars lion king collecters edition.......2003-11-03

fantastic a must for any collector i bought it for my son for christmas but i ended up keeping it for myself. The theatre with the 6 figures is great and the film and special features are fantastic i enjoyed the film the first time round but this is even better. earl makes the lion king come to life with his voice over.

2 out of 5 stars poor item.......2007-09-13

Really dissapointing item. Its a Japanese dvd which i didnt feel was made clear in item description & my dvd player is constantly having to correct disc errors through the movie.

I did have to chase up with user, but fair play the item was reissued pretty swiftly which is the only reason why i've not given this 1 star.

Wont be using the seller again.
