Wonderful film for everyone (including 40+ year olds...).......2008-02-17
Yes this is basically a kids film, but as a 40+ person with no kids who has purchased the DVD, I'll happily own up to being an adult who loves this film.
This film set the benchmark for computer animated films when it was released in 1995 and it still looks good today. The story is simple and the characters are marvellous. Whoever thought of the idea that Buzz Lightyear could be a toy who believes he really is a Space Ranger deserved an Oscar. Its a brilliantly conceived idea, which has a funny and at times touching script.
Its also worth mentioning the that the songs are by Randy Newman, a vastly underrated musician and songwriter, whose Uncles wrote the music for some the great Hollywood movies of the 40's and 50's.
The extras on the two disc edition are pretty good, but its the main film you're buying it for. In my opinion Toy Story 2 is even better than this one - 6 stars for that one perhaps?
A Classic, one of the best........2007-12-29
I bought and watched this after about 5 years of not watching it, and i still love it, perhaps even more than before! I think it is one of the best childrens films ever made, but adults love it too! Even though it was made more than ten years ago i think that kids will still love this today, it should be in anyones collection, a fun clever and interesting film that was a breakthroug in the anime era. Brilliant is all that can be said!!!
"hey buzz can you kick my ass for me?" oh sorry... HE ALREADY HAS!.......2007-12-27

getting into it........2007-12-02
i loved toy story 2 but i'm still trying to get into the first toy story film. it is not as good as 2 because was the first pixar film to be released in theaters, but i watch it once in a few weeks to try to get into it. the best part is the end of the movie where the family moves, i mean the moving truck. but it still is a great addition to toy story 2. i would rate this a 3 star rating because it is not as good as 2.
Pixar-tastic!.......2007-10-16
This was a groundbreaking film when it came out, you'd think that after all these years it'd look dated and not up-to-scratch compared to modern CGI features - but it still looks great!
I watched it again the other on DVD and if you really scrutinise you can tell where an image is added over another (Buzz and Woody at the top of the stairs in the evil Sid's house - they don't really appear to be making contact with the floor) but this is such a minor detail that most people would never notice it. It's amazing that this film which is now 12 years old is still one of the benchmark holders for the genre, the quality really is amazing.
The plot finds Woody knocked off his throne as Andy's favourite toy when he gets a Buzz Lightyear action figure. Buzz doesn't know he's a toy though - he thinks the LED in his arm really is a deadly laser. A lot of the humour in the first half of the film comes from Buzz's belief that he is actually a Space Ranger from another planet. The jealousy and patronising attitude of Woody towards Buzz is tested when they find themselves stranded at a petrol station.
I won't discuss the plot any more for those who haven't seen it, but the real humour in this film comes from the interaction between Buzz and Woody. Not just humour either, there's a real pathos between the two. The way the toys interact with each other is done in such a way that it mirrors `real life' mannerisms and anxieties.
The casting is perfect. Before I saw this film over a decade ago I couldn't really imagine Tom Hanks as Woody and Tim Allen as Buzz - but they are perfect for the role. They use their voices to really put across the emotions of the characters. The animators obviously part modelled the features on the actual actors.
The rest of the characters are casted just as brilliantly with a notable performance from John "Cheers" Ratzenberger (who also has a small part in Monsters Inc) amongst others.
The DVD package is fab, with lots of features including promotional material, animated shorts, documentaries, commentaries, etc.
The quality of the film transfer is spot on, this DVD boasts the highest bit-rate for this film during any of its other DVD releases. I haven't got an older DVD to compare it to - but it does look strikingly fresh and crisp.

Wonderful animation together with great storytelling........2007-05-12
When "Toy Story" came out in the cinemas in 1995, it was seen as a revolutionary breakthrough in animation. This being the first computer generated animated film. So basically this film inspired the computer generated animated film hits "Shrek", "A Bug's Life", "Antz" and others including "The Incredibles" and "Cars".
"Toy Story" has a really fun and moving plot line. Woody (Tom Hanks), is in charge of the toys in Andy's room. He's also Andy's favourite toy. That is until Andy's birthday gets brought forward a week early and his mother gives him a surprise birthday present. That turns out to be Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen). Woody and Buzz have their disagreements but they get to respect one another before too long and they find themselves on a mission to save other toys from being sabotaged by a deranged boy living next door to Andy. Only Woody must save Buzz before the evil boy sends him to the stars attached to a rocket. Meanwhile Andy's parents along with Andy are in the process of moving house....
What transpires is a fantastic and thought provoking film aimed not just at the kids but also adults alike. It still makes me laugh whenever I watch it and the computer animation is breathtaking still as it was back in 1995.
"Toy Story 2" is the sequel to the original film and in my opinion a much funnier and intelligent film. Featuring new characters along with the original regulars from the first film, it is moving without being too sentimental and it's an absolute treasure to watch.
In this film, Andy goes off to summer camp without his favourite toy. Whilst he's away, Woody is toynapped from the front of Andy's house by a toy collector who after taking Woody has the complete set of toys from Woody's Roundup. These are Jessie (Joan Cusack), Bullseye the horse and Stinky Pete The Prospector (Kelsey Grammer). Woody finds he's going to sit behind glass along with the others for ever in Japan. Buzz and the other toys set off to rescue him and to also remind him what it feels like to be loved as a toy.
There's more action in this film and the moments when Jessie and Woody are looking back are great fun. The most moving moment in the film I found was when Jessie was looking back on how she got dumped by her previous owner. The funniest scene in this film has to be when Buzz and the other toys are crossing the road disguised as cones on their mission to rescue Woody. It still makes me laugh. In my view anyway, this film is better than the first one. But together, these two films are awesome in their delivery and storytelling. The animation in both films is incredible and they appeal to children and adults alike. In my opinion, these films are a must.
