Catweazle - Series 2

5 out of 5 stars Magic.......2005-08-05

Geoffrey Bayldon returns for another season of magical mayhem. This second series of Catweazle is filled to the brim with joyous hilarity as the loveable magician embarks on a quest to find the elusive 13 signs of the Zodiac.

Probably not as well crafted as season one, but still a joyous romp through Carpenter's peerless creation. Naturally Bayldon shines throughout.

5 out of 5 stars CATWEAZLE RETURNS !!!.......2005-08-03

After the initial success of Catweazle, Series 2 sees the return of this Mighty Magician who once again escapes 11th Century Normans by travelling through time via the water/magic spell into the 20th Century.
Catweazle arrives at the Collingford Estate and befriends their son Cedric by transcribing an ancient inscription. With this information Cedric hopes to find the lost treasure of the Collingfords but Catweazle's ultimate desire is quite simply to fly.
Whereas the first series adopted a more serious tone the 2nd delved more into comedic situations whilst maintaining a delicate balance of both pathos and humour which was successfully combined. Catweazle this time around, was not so much predominated with finding a way home but more obsessed with the flying spell!
Joining Geoffrey Bayldon as Catweazle are Moray Watson, Elspet Gray as Lord and Lady Collingford with Gary Warren as their son Cedric.
Such was the interest in this intriguing new series that a multitude of British talent lined up join the main cast for various guest appearances.
Paul Eddington, Kenneth Cope, Derek Francis, Tony Selby, John Ringham, Tony Caunter and Graham Crowden to name just a few.
Peter Butterworth fresh from his guest appearance in the prevous run returned regularly each week as Groome the all-round groundsman.
Sadly the series never developed into a 3rd year as the plan was for Catweazle to be reunited with Carrot on Hexwood Farm as the Balloon, (which heralded his farewell at the end of Series 2) was to arrive unexpectantly back there.
One cannot compare both series as both are different and totally enjoyable so sit back and watch this timeless series about an aging eccentric wizard who is as complex and as interesting as the world he's trying to understand, its compelling and adictive !
My new family in Japan who had until only recently never seen Catweazle before, already know Catweazle is money well spent !
Relive once again the magic of these 13 Episodes as they are "TRULY WONDROUS" !!!
Eat your heart out Harry Potter !

5 out of 5 stars Magic!!.......2007-04-01

You cannot fail to enjoy this most wonderful of series. Filmed in the long, hot Summer of '69 with a perfect cast of actors. The sentiments expressed in the series are of wonder, friendship & that magic can happen. If you are feeling down, watch an episode or two & it will lift you - really!

5 out of 5 stars 'A Return To Innocent Kids Entertainment'.......2007-03-14

Geoffrey Bayldon is one of my most loved actors. As Catweazle and particularly, The Crowman in 'Worzel Gummidge' (I was born in 1965) his performances bring back to me memories of the happy childhood I had.
Watching these programmes again I've found, is just as magical an experience as an adult as it was as a child. With so much violence and hatred in the world these days and so many of kids favourite programmes full of violence and fighting (Power Rangers, Transformers etc) it is so lovely to sit and watch something that is gentle and reliant on nothing but a great storyline and a kids immagination. Geoffrey is beyond brilliant as the out of time inept magician and his reactions when confronted by modern technology like electric light are so real and incredibly funny. This DVD box set is also a must for fans with a computer because included here on cdrom are files of the Catweazle annuals from the early 70's plus loads of other interesting extras like original scripts and covers from magazines at the time such as 'Look In' all of which, bring memories flooding back if you are my age. Every episode ever made is here and you will enjoy watching this again as much as your kids will enjoy watching it for the first time. Return to innocence..BUY THIS!

What can i say " Brilliant....Brilliant"
This is a timeless classic and my children really enjoyed it.
I would recommend this to anybody.
it appealed to me all those years ago and now the kids of this generation too, not a lot of series can do that.

5 out of 5 stars Time Traveller I never forgot.......2006-01-20

From the opening shots of a verdant England in full summer my whole childhood came back. I lived in places like the location. It was wonderful. As a kid I watched the series 'live' on TV - no repeats, no time to linger. Now I've seen Catweazle again I'm impressed it is as good as I remembered. Okay, Catweazle is a bit overblown as a theatrical character but its quite understandable if you are 900 years out of time, an inept magician and wanted by the Normans. Catweazle doesn't offer high drama, production qualities, nor acting. The DVD doesn't have subtitles and very limited playing options - it is straight out of 1969/70. Lovely. You might say it has mild moments of peril (to the characters, that is!)but from its pedigree you know it won't have any bad language, behaviour or tackle any contentious issues head-on. It was and is just entertaining. Catweazle is a very charming, easy-paced and endearing piece of TV history that you might want to watch with your own kids (and let's all start calling our mobile phones a 'telling bone').

And it is definitely not Wurzle Gummage... which was something else altogether.
