5 out of 5 stars Top notch.......2007-07-05

This one must have slipped in under Disney's radar. It's genuinely touching and it portrays family, racial and environmental concerns in a way that is sensitive, funny and well scripted. The latter is first class, with drama, humour and pathos expertly interleaved. For once, a non-American (the Grand Council woman) is in the right and in authority. The Hawaian women are similarly against Disney heroine stereotype, having a small bust and big hips.
It is entirely to the script writer's credit that many of the quotes have slipped into our family vernacular e.g. "... disciplined ... five times a day ... with bricks ... in a pillow case ..." usually with a different family member delivering the various phrases just like something out of, heaven help us, Seinfeld or The Waltons.
Thoroughly recommended. I defy you - especially parents- to watch to the end without tears pricking your eyes.

5 out of 5 stars Out of this world.......2004-06-01

The marketing people soooo got the pitch of this movie wrong ...

I thought it was some schmaltzy Disney tale of a cute little Hawiian girl and her pet mouse! It actually turns out to be one of the funniest, most entertaining, original animated movies since Toy Story....

I'd hate to give the plot away so I'll just say that it involves the story of the relationship between an alien who has been genetically engineered to be the most evil creature in the universe and consequently banished to earth by the Intergalactic Federation, and a 'problem' child with a penchant for Elvis Presley, who's about to be taken into care by social services, represented by an ex-gangsta called Bubbles! - Disney? NOT!!

There IS a strong moral overtone here, delivering the importance of the concept of 'family' (in the broadest sense tho', which I applaud) and it can verge on the sentimental for my taste (but hey, this is Disney); but the script, the gags, the characters, the comic timing and the animation are staggering. I laughed til I cried many times ... the script is by far the most adult I've heard in any of the recent animated movies which have aimed to give something to the grown-ups too - in fact I reckon most of the gags will go way over the head of your average kid, this film is every bit an adult comedy.

This really is a 'must own' DVD. An absolute classic.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Brilliant From Start To Finish.......2004-05-23

I love this film. There are just so many things I can say about it to show how excellent it is. The film has a very unique story, such rich, detailed animation, and a fantastic cast. For the characters, Stitch is something revolutionary that can't be left out of the legacy of the House of Mouse, and there's no way you can watch this film and not be instantly smitten by Lilo. She's lonely, and orphaned, so you can't help but pity the poor girl, because someone so cute deserves to be loved! The voice casting in this film could hardly be better. Such famous names like the great Tia Carrere as Nani, the slick and solid performance from Ving Rhames as Cobra, and the hilarious David Ogden Stiers and Kevin McDonald as Jumba and Pleakley. But top marks have to go to the amazing Daveigh Chase as Lilo, followed by Zoe Caldwell's Grandcouncil Woman. The great thing is that both of them hold their acting strongly in the equally impressive follow up and the TV series. As for the film itself, there is a clear mixture of everything here. There's a bit of emotional drama in here, some historical references to Elvis Presley, lots of winning comedy and sci-fi action. On top of it, it has a very powerful moral message to it, which is that family means nobody gets left behind. When I call it powerful I believe that the moral message about family being the most important thing in the world really makes you think afterwards.
Because Lilo and Stitch is worthy of 100 stars out of 5, it's unfair to take stars off the quality of extras on the DVD. What we get here is great, the making ofs, On Location with the Directors, the look of the film, the Hula lesson, etc, but it still misses a few things which would've been nice. What I would've liked to see here are the proper theatrical trailers, whereas here you just get the short US teasers, perhaps some interviews with the cast and crew, and above all, an audio commentary. It really deserves a commentary, unlike the recent Brother Bear release.
Lilo and Stitch is a film suitable for any mood. It can really cheer you up when you're down, it can be very easily loved by all the family, or if you just want a great thing to laugh at, buy this DVD, get the sequel in your house as well, and you're sorted.

5 out of 5 stars Stitch Is The Best Ever.......2003-11-08

From the first moment I saw a preview of the little blue alien on TV, I new this movie would be fantastic, and when I watched it, IT WAS BETTER! I cried and cried through the movie and when I remembered it. This movie touched me so much, I love it and they have made a second movie about it and a series on the Disney Channel. My friends know how much I love him. They give me all sorts of presents that are about Lilo and Stitch. I LOVE STITCH. This is the best animated movie I have ever seen. ITS SOOOO CUTE!!! Its sad, and very touching. (hey guess what, gantu has a poetic side! HAHAHA!) Anyways, this movie relates to me. My Ohana Is a lot like hers, the difference is my parents separated, my lil sis autistic. Its a havoc, not a family and I chose stitch to me my little fallen angel. We can be ABOMINATIONS together! YAY! hehehehahaha...Takka!

5 out of 5 stars Disney is back.......2003-09-03

Lilo and Stitch is a return to classic animation and story telling for Disney. No computer generated characters, but real animation, set in Hawaii. The backgrounds used are gorgeous, and the Hawaiian physique is exaggerated.

Stitch is a genetic experiment gone wrong. Sentenced to imprisonment, he escapes and after some hilarious escapades, lands on Earth. Here he is mistaken for a dog and taken to the shelter.

Meet Lilo and her older sister Noni, who is trying to raise Lilo after the death of their parents. Things aren't easy and social services is threatening to intervene. In an effort to cheer Lilo up, Noni takes her to the pound, where she can pick herself out a dog. But instead, Stitch picks her in effort to escape his would-be captors.

This is a classic Disney story, with Stitch trying to find a place to fit in, and Lilo and Noni, struggling to stay a family. It's not done in a schmaltzy way, but instead handled well, and will undoubtedly cause you to shed a tear or two.

The use of Elvis songs throughout strengthens the film, adding to the humour and sadness. There are plenty of funny moments in this film, mainly featuring Stitch. Bred for fighting and causing chaos, Stitch's skill is in "flooding sewers, turning signposts around and losing socks."

This is my favourite recent kids film by a distance. Laughs and tears gauranteed, but you can bet that it all works out in the end. A great soundtrack, fitting in with the present Elvis revival.

5 out of 5 stars Adorable.......2008-01-12

Lilo & Stich is such a lovely film! It tells the highly original story of a little Hawaiian girl who is orphaned encountering an experimental creature from outerspace and quickly befriending it. The animation is exquisite and the voice cast are on top form throughout both the comedic and adventurous elements of the story. The music is magnificent and very fitting to the film as most of it is Hawaiian influenced and features Hawaiian singers and instruments. An excellent if often overlooked Disney film that will touch your heart and also leave you with a smile on your face by the end.

5 out of 5 stars Flawless.......2008-01-11

I know my review title might seem a bit of a stretch for some, but there's absolutely nothing to hate about this film. Everything is just perfect. The characters are adorable and you can easily connect with them right from the start, and the voices, especially Daveigh Chase as Lilo, are superbly cast. The Elvis Presley soundtrack is great, really sets the Hawaii-based mood of the film, and there's plenty of action, unique comedy and emotion, all blended together in a way that can make it appealing for all ages. The special features are not to be missed either. Although there was a good selection of the original release, the new added features make the revised 2 Disc edition well worth getting. As well as the previous features there's a fascinating documentary and some hilarious deleted scenes, including an alternate ending that was changed at the last minute following the 9/11 attacks.

A modern classic in every aspect, Lilo and Stitch really deserves to be remembered not just as one of Disney's finest, but certainly as one of the best feel-good films of all time. If you haven't seen it yet, do so now. It'll leave a big smile on your face for the whole 80 minutes.

5 out of 5 stars Unanticipated Forgotten Object crash lands in later Disney canon. Is actually good........2007-12-12

After months of dust-collecting, I finally got round to watching Lilo & Stitch, a film reputed as the 'best of the rest' in the lesser-known corners of Disney's feature animation output. Whilst a reasonable financial success in 2002, and a big-name franchise for a modern Disney thought by many to be going steadily downhill, the film nevertheless passed many by and continues to do so. As a 2D feature, it lost the academy award to the brilliant 'Spirited Away', and lost many an audience member to a climate that was increasingly hostile towards 2D animation at the peak of Pixar and Dreamworks' success. As such it passed many by, and continues to do so.

Inevitably, this is unfair and Lilo & Stitch fully certainly deserves its reputation as the best of Disney's recent output, perhaps even as the best Disney movie since The Lion King. This is because Lilo & Stitch isn't as much about Stitch's causing havoc (though the 'Aladdin' level of humour/mayhem in this is certainly welcome, and consistently punchy) as it is about the family unit that forms around Stitch, Lilo and older sister / mother substitute Nani. Despite being pivotal I didn't know this family conflict was in the film when I sat down to watch it, and it surprised me with how emotionally engaging it was, ensuring that I was weepy one minute, laughing the next, a maturely managed roller-coaster of emotion.

Along with the beautiful Hawaiian setting, when marketing for the original film, Disney has downplayed this family theme and highlighted Stitch as a sort of alien Bart Simpson, a whirlwind of havoc with full "BOLD ITALIC UNDERLINE ALL-CAPS!" surf-boarding radicalness. Yawn. Disney originally created an interesting marketing campaign in which Stitch was seen as the antithesis to Disney classics like The Little Mermaid and The Lion King, but (clever as their alternate re-tellings of classic Disney moments were) after years of unsuccessful Disney productions they just served to cement the fact that Disney had changed to something unrecognisable.

And true, the film isn't a big-budget ani-musical and its Science Fiction setting basically a first in the Disney Animated Features Canon, but at its core is a sentimental and commendable message worth far more than the 'Saturday Morning Cartoon' treatment that Disney gave to Lilo and Stitch's promotional period. But of course, Disney weren't quite finished: because it DID become a Saturday Morning Cartoon, and it was subjected to as many Cheapquels as every other half successful Disney feature of the last 70 years and then some (and predictably, Stitch is the main focus of these stories, in full BOLD ITALIC UNDERLINE ALL-CAPS! glory). A shame that a decent idea should be recycled endlessly in this way, but frankly that's just the way Disney has been in this decade, and looks to remain if John Lasseter fails to turn them around...

So what of this 2-Disc DVD edition of Disney Animation's only 21st Century triumph? In a rare reversal of the norm, this 2-Disk edition has never seen a release in the US which is a shame for stateside Disney fans, because the second disk is great! So long as you don't expect impartiality (Disney documentaries typically make Chinese versions of 'What really happened at Tienanmen' look like a tear-drenched confession) you're in for a treat. The first disc contains the standard Disney DVD knick-knacks aimed primarily at kids: silly DVD games, a Disney-pedia feature on Hawaii and the obligatory inharmonious holocaust of some song or other by Disney's favourite regiment of audio assassins (The Mouseketeers aren't so called because their spiritual leader is a small, trouser wearing rodent, they've earned the name by violently filling DVD extras with enough cheese to stink out Cheddar gorge). There is an audio commentary which I haven't got round to hearing yet, but the second disk alone is enough for me to give a recommendation. Cleverly segmented into parts with optional 'footnotes' as you go along, the second disk is a comprehensive making-of adequately supplemented by material that all too often gets left off the disk despite being discussed in the documentary: complete deleted scenes, production sketches and scene / concept pitches are present. Particularly interesting are interviews with animation idols responsible for backgrounds in the first four Disney features, presented as supplements to detailed accounts of Lilo & Stitch's early development and unconventional use of watercolour backgrounds. The hours of content on these discs manage to put some of the more recent 'Platinum' editions to shame and are highly commendable.

4 out of 5 stars A GOOD WALT DISNEY MOVIE.......2007-08-19

2002 may seem a long time ago now, I was all tired and worn out. Luckily enough, my ex-Girlfriend (we just started dating at the time) insisted we go out for dinner and a movie. I could still taste the gourmet meal I ate, and smell the popcorn that greeted me upon entering the theater. Needless to say, I wasn't the film buff I am now back then, and I entered Lilo & Stitch without any previous knowledge about what to expect.

After all this time I still like the film, the fact it was an over the top animated masterpiece from the get go. As anyone would tell you from personal experience, it's all subjective anyway. Fact of the matter is, I instantly fell in love with the film and its lovable characters. The story of an alien being (cute and cuddly as he may be) who is stranded in a place miles away from home made me relate to my own personal status, having to serve in the hot and humid southwest area of Israel, hundreds of kilometers from my own home. Once I was there, feeling for the ridiculous looking Stitch, I soon developed a gradual empathy to Lilo, the little girl who adopted Stitch after mistaking him for a dog, as I myself am an orphan, and I can see why she needed a dog to share her emotions.

Now mix all this with the hilarious animation, numerous likable side characters, beautiful Hawaiian setting, refined Elvis Priestly soundtrack, and you got yourself a winner. Lilo & Stitch manages to be silly and intelligent both at once, and to this day makes me laugh and cry simultaneously. It's the last traditional animation outing that was a big hit at the box office as well (if memory serves me right, it earned nearly 150 million dollars in the US alone), and there's an obvious reason for that. Like Shrek 1&2, The Incredibles, Finding Nemo and other 3-D CGI animation films, it keeps its plot simple and easy to follow, when all the while manages to pay gestures to older films and themes us grown ups can relate to; thus really living up to the cliché that insists a U rating is for everyone from 4 to 90 9or something like that).

As you can tell, I first and foremost fell in love with this film for sentimental reasons, but at the end of the day, what made me watch it again and again over time was its original mix of Sci-fi and traditional animation, unbelievable funny scenes (try watching Stitch running over the toy model of San Francisco and tell me you didn't laugh) and simple morals of family and friendship. Either way you turn it, Lilo & Stitch is a keeper. They truly don't make them like this anymore.

4 out of 5 stars Not quite classic, but surprisingly good.......2006-08-21

I bought Lilo and stitch for purely out of sure curisoity and I surprised to find it was a very enjoyable film, much more so than many of the CG animations that seem to have over taken the more traditional approach. The animation may not have been of the same standard but the story kind of reminded me of a lightweight miyazaki.

Hopefully with John Lasseter at the creative helm even more 2D classics like this will be emerging from the disney studios

Lilo And Stitch II: Stitch Has A Glitch

Amazon.co.uk Review

Familial love proves all-powerful when Stitch gets a glitch that encourages bad behavior and threatens his relationship with Lilo in Lilo and Stitch 2. Like the first Lilo and Stitch, this straight-to-DVD sequel focuses primarily on Stitch, Lilo, and Lilo's sister Nani. Stitch's nightmares about misbehaving prove prophetic when he begins experiencing moments of uncontrollable badness. Unfortunately, Stitch's unruly actions always seem to interfere with Lilo's important preparations for the May Day hula competition--a competition that Lilo desperately wants to win in her mother's memory. Jumba goes to work creating a fusion chamber that will re-charge Stitch's molecules and purge his badness, but he can't seem to build one that works. In the end, it's Lilo's faith in herself and the power of Ohana that offer the only chance to cure Stitch and fill his goodness level to the top. (Ages 3-12) --Tami Horiuchi, Amazon.com

5 out of 5 stars A great disney film.......2005-10-12

I know most people see that lilo and stich two is a sequal and pass it over.. Don't do it with this one, it had me in tears it was such a good movie - not as good as the first - but its still a great film!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Brilliant!! Very Funny and Very Moving.......2005-10-04

When Stitch The Movie was released two years ago, I still already knew that another Lilo and Stitch film was on it's way. I have to say fully that it was well worth the wait. Although Dakota Fanning, who voices Lilo instead of Daveigh Chase in this one, doesn't always sound right, she does her best to give the character Lilo her own touch and keep true to the original voice at the same time, and in my opinion, does a very good job. Daveigh was sensational in the original and Stitch The Movie, making Lilo seem real more than just a cartoon, so it ws always going to be difficult to have someone else voice her here but Dakota does manage to pull it off successfully. It was also always going to be difficult to make this meet the standards of the excellent first two releases, but luckily the hilarious moments, great voicing from all the cast and wonderful script make it firmly stay on par with the others.

The other quality that this amazingly achieves like the first Lilo and Stitch did is to make the viewer cry as well as laugh. I won't spoil the film for anyone but this is definitely a worthy sequel. It's VERY funny and also VERY moving. The extras don't add much to the DVD value but just buy it for the film itself! You will not be disappointed!

3 out of 5 stars glitchy, but still the same stitch.......2005-09-26

This is the second sequel, with another in the pipeline. I adored the original, but lilo and stitch two left me a little disappointed, though it had its moments. This film is similar.
The animation is good, and the plot not as forced as some sequels. The characters stay true to themselves, and I think the humans are generally presented as more realistic and alive.
There is a lot of humour an adult can appreciate, as well as nicely paced action. The film however is short. It feels like a feature-length cartoon rather than a movie. It lacks the same sparkle of Lilo and Stitch however, but you can exspect that of a straight-to-video disney.
The ending was also satisfying, more so than a lot of cinema Disney films.

the DVD extras are dissapointing, the Stitch short poorly animated and obviously thrown together for the sake of having a dvd extra.... but then again, i don't think i have yet seen a DVD extra which i found worthwhile....

Worth watching if you are a fan of the little blue abomination.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest movie ever by far!!.......2005-09-20

I'm 15 and a huge fan of Lilo and Stitch. I loved the first movie, though as you watch the second you do tend to look back over the original and pick out faults, and say what they've done better this time.

The animation is Disney's best, and the movie has the same charm as the original. It also stands as the only movie EVER in existence to make me cry. Really! But you really ought to watch it for yourself, I won't spoil the ending for you. The ONLY fault I can see is it ends all too soon. Really, Lilo and Stitch fan or not, you have to see this, I can garuantee you will absolutely love it!

3 out of 5 stars Huge Disney fan.......2005-09-07

I will admit it. I'm 21 and still a huge Disney fan. I understant that now the future of their feature length classics are in doubt that they have to make money other ways. The way they seem to have chosen is to make really bad sequals to their classic films. I loved the first Lilo and Stitch and could even say that it was my favorite Disney film but this sequal has really ruined that for me. It's animation is cold and certainly not their best work. The story line is bad and steals much from the first movie. It's special features are also dire with the only saving grace being the Jump 5 music video and I know that's not to everyone's taste. I would recomend that you stick to the origninals and wait for more of the classics to be released.

3 out of 5 stars "Any Man's death diminishes me ".......2007-03-31

"Because I am involved in mankind;
and therefore send to know
for who the bell tolls.
It tolls for thee."

Spain 1937. Robert Jordan (Gary Cooper) came to Spain o fight for "The Republic" (a nice way to say for the commies) and against nationalists. He also had a dislike for Germans and Italians. His assignment was to go behind the nationalist lines and blow up a bridge at a strategic moment. There this stoic hero meets a peasant girl (a much too young for Gary, Ingrid Bergman) with a bad haircut and that barely escaped a train ride. They naturally fall in love which complicates things. Will this jeopardize the mission? Do we care?

Along with this we have the classic mixture of characters that you can not tell if they are the good guys or the bad guys. The two that stand out besides the hero and his girl are Katina Paxinou (sort of a female Antony Quinn) as the doyenne, and Akim Tamiroff as the once good guerilla who may be bad or just self-centered. Who they were and how the acted was quite a predicable formula.

The story is an adoption from the Ernest Hemingway novel. Of course they could not put everything in the story and too a few liberties. We also miss the dialog that people read Hemmingway for.

The initial credits are in some annoying script (Parchment) make it hard to read at a glance.

2 out of 5 stars MIND THE GAP!.......2006-04-20

I bought this for a friend, and to be honest the film didn't do a lot for me, but the real purpose of my review is to alert potential buyers to an oddity about the DVD that could lead them to believing it is faulty. I sent the DVD back to Amazon because the first chapter (supposedly containing the titles etc) appeared to have sound but no vision at all. The replacement was the same. However I let ths one play on and eventually the opening titles appeared. It seems there is a very long empty gap at the beginning where the screen is completely blank. Normally an overture is accompanied by a colour wash or something visual, but not in this case. Beware!

5 out of 5 stars a great Hemingway adaptation.......2002-11-23

When Hemingway picked Cooper and Bergman for this 1943 film, he could not have done better. They are heavenly to look at, and the chemistry between them is palpable. The dialogue has retained the style of the book, and they make it sound so natural, which is not an easy feat. Set in 1937 Spain, this Civil War story is an action packed adventure, but above all, it is a love story.

Terrific cinematography by Ray Rennahan, a good atmospheric score by Victor Young, and a slew of interesting character actors (Katina Paxinou won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress) back the magnificent leads.
Cooper is not only gorgeous, but gives a subtle, lovely performance, and Bergman, looking younger than her 29 years, with short, curly hair, is luminous. I love the scene where she gets her first kiss, and says "I always wondered where the noses went".

Directed by Sam Wood, who a year earlier had directed one of Cooper's most famous films, "The Pride of the Yankees" (and in '45 was to team again with Cooper and Bergman for "Saratoga Trunk"), did a wonderful job with Hemingway's novel...it stands up to many viewings, and is a must for Cooper and Bergman fans.

5 out of 5 stars Looks set to be another winning release from Disney.......2004-02-29

I love Lilo and Stitch, the original film was spectacular, the second, not so good but just as hilarious, and the series is only the best cartoon on TV. I heard about this DVD on the US Amazon and it looks interesting. It's not just a DVD, it's also a game where you have to search all over Hawaii for various experiments. The DVD also features two episodes of the series, 'Mr.Stenchy', with Experiment 254, an adorable stinkbomb that Lilo uses to win the acceptance of the other girls, and what Gantu finds an affection for once he's snatched it for the hilarious Dr. Hamsterviel. The other episode is called 'Clip', which features Experiment 177, a hair eating experiment that runs amok over the island, and it's just brilliant. Lilo tries to use it to get back at her enemy Myrtle Edmonds (I hate her too), but it attacks her mum instead. It then has a fantastic run in with Gantu, who winds up giving his own hilarious example of the hula.
