Pokemon - The First Movie [2000]

Amazon.co.uk Review

The world domination of Pokémon begets their first theatrical movie. This adventure is a little more complex and dark than the popular TV series, but kids who live for the show will gobble up this film and ask for seconds. Those baffled by the show's popularity, however, will see nothing better here. Mewtwo, a new type of Pokémon designed by scientists to be the ultimate fighter, decides he wants to rule the world and challenges all the great Pokémasters to battle. Of course, our intrepid heroes Ash, Misty and Brock are there to tangle with Mewtwo and spoil his devilish schemes. The film is a tad more emotional than the show (that is, there is some emotion), with Ash sacrificing himself to defend his beloved Pikachu.

Would you really expect the makers of this worldwide phenomenon to radically change its winning formula? The feature is only 55-minutes long, but there's also a 20-minute short, "Pikachu's Vacation." For the Pokémon novice, this escapade will truly baffle: the narrated tale has virtually no dialogue except Pokémon speaking their names (Bulbasaur, for instance, will only express emotion by using variations of his name: "Bulba, Bulba-SAUR!"). --Doug Thomas, Amazon.com

5 out of 5 stars Its Poke' Tastic.......2006-07-25

I havent seen this film for ages and yet it's still good.
The Pokemon short nearly brought me to tears when Charizard got its head stuck, as Charizard is my all time favourite Pokemon. I rented it out again and when Ash was hit by Mewtwo and Mew, the sight of Pikachu crying - I had to stop myself crying as well.
It features Pokemon you rarely see in the TV series - Gyarados for example. You also see Mew the rarest Pokemon ever.
The only bad thing Pokemon (its a small thing) is that I think Ash cares too much about Pikachu.
Even so, its still a great movie so I reckon you buy it - at any age!

this is a great dvd. there is a commentary and loads of good extras. plus, it introduces ash brock misty and team rocket quite well. this is the ultimate pokemon showdown between a crazed phsychic pokemon called mewtwo, clone of mew, hellbent on taking over the world. plus the mini movie pikachus vacation is great and just adds an extra sense of excitement to the dvd. if you love pokemon then you are going to love this. 3 out of 5 stars If Ash had died, this film would be 5 starts..........2004-10-09

When this film was first released i watched it over and over. It was great. I never muched liked the pokemon tv series, too much Pikachu and his annoying and stupid trainer, Ash. The problem is that we don't see enough of the power house pokemon doing battle with one another. I long for there to be a pokemon movie following the sucess of an older trainer as he/she battles her way through the pokemon league...

this movie has a slow start, but once Ash and his friends encounter Mewtwo and the other trainers things start to heat up. The animation is beautiful in this film, perhaps the best japanese animation work i've ever seen! You also get to see some cool power house pokemon that you rarly see in the tv series; Gyarados (one of my personal faves), Charizard, Blastoise, Venusaur and Mewtwo to name a few...

The re-vamped theme tune to the first battle at the start of the movie is great. It's a shame Ash's puny pokes' magically beat the crap out of their awesome foes.

My fave pokemon film, a bit mushy at times... The onyl thing that could make this film better is if Ash had actually died.

Pokemon The Movie 2000

Amazon.co.uk Review

Pokémon 2000, the second film to spin off the powerhouse child-friendly franchise of the turn-of-the-millennium, consists of the colourful if babyish human-presence free, short Pikachu's Rescue Adventure and the more elaborate feature The Power of One. The main attraction is up to snuff animation-wise, with imaginative settings (an island lair, a huge dirigible) that crossbreed cyberpunk futurism and Jules Verne style retro-fantasy. It even has the germ of an interesting, almost subversive idea, in that the story's wealthy villain is a green-haired fanatic who is as obsessive about collecting Pokémon as the film's target audience--he's after three fabled birds, Moltres, Zapdos and Articuno, but is really interested in the cute Loch Ness Monster-type being Lugia--but his philosophy is so skewed that he is more interested in owning and numbering the fabulous creatures than training or befriending them. A clever pun in a prophecy decrees that in a predestined crisis, "the world will turn to ash"--this turns out not to be a gloomy foretelling of holocaust but the revelation that human hero Ash is a messianic "Chosen One" who can restore the balance of nature when the collector's antics have unleashed worldwide climatic change.

Adults might find the whole thing an endurance test for its shrill voicings, with Americanised kids and Japanese baby-talking Pokémon, not to mention the meld of incredibly simplistic storyline with amazingly intricate backstory. A trace of self-awareness comes in a brief snippet from a Weird Al Yankovic's song ("Polka mon") under the crowded end credits. --Kim Newman

4 out of 5 stars Harmless cartoon action at it's best.......2006-12-20

i saw the first pokemon movie when i was eight, and i thought it sucked, it was boring, stupid and pointless(by that i mean they don't even remember it). But then 2000 came out, and as a general pokemon fan i wanted to see it, i thought it was friggin' awesome, and now 6 years or so later i still love it even though i'm not interested in pokemon anymore.

Seriously, if you ever liked pokemon, then you will enjoy this, but don't touch the other movies because they are absoloutely awful.

1 out of 5 stars Do not even bother!.......2005-10-27

What an awful film.

A little boy randomly finds a random island and with his random set of randomly selected friends, he randomly tries to stop a random 'evil' man from capturig some random birds in his random flying... ummm... made-up space station type of thing so he can do what? I don't know! Some random birds aren't going to make you famous, old chum! Think again! And so all the Pokemons from all over the world come to save their freinds... SNOOOORE!!!!

With terrible voice acting, awful special effects and... well... Dire animations, quite frankly; how bad can you get?
When you buy this film from amazon, remember to go to Klenex.com and buy a box of tissues so when you watch it, you can mop up your tears when you realise how much money that you have wasted!
Don't even bother!

4 out of 5 stars pokemon the second movie hot or not?.......2005-09-09

pokemon 2000 is a great movie but has a few faults

pokemon 2000 has beautiful graphics especially for the legendarys (Zapdos,Articuno,Moltres and Lugia)
Yes dont worry i said that too (wooooooooooo!)
it is action straight from the start and doesnt really stop the whole movie however it does stop and have about a 5 minute boring ending so watch out for that.

but all in all it is a brilliant movie!

my verdict: BUY IT!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars super cool japanese anime........2005-07-21

this film is awesome and i would reccomend it to all pokemon fans. It has some great digital effects and the pikachu's rescue adventure is great. 5 starts out of five.

5 out of 5 stars The power of one.......2004-11-24

This is a great movie, just as good as the first. Once again, Ash is the hero. This movie is the right length, not rushed and still has a film feel to it rather than an extended episode. The music score is great, along with the animation and the detail in drawing.
Once again this movie has a mini movie which is equally as fun as the first, and smaller pokemon fans will love it.
More pok'emon magic!
