Mulan 2 [2004]

Amazon.co.uk Review

With less drama and more slapstick than its predecessor, Disney's Mulan 2 continues the animated saga of the young Chinese heroine, Fa Mulan (voiced by Ming-Na Wen, sung by Lea Salonga). The story picks up one month after Mulan has saved her country through bravery and determination. Revered by all, she now returns to her village and becomes engaged to General Li Shang. Wedding plans must wait, however, when the Emperor assigns the couple to a secret mission to escort his three princess daughters across China where their arranged marriages to waiting princes will secure an alliance with a rival kingdom and save China from invasion. Meanwhile, Mulan's wise-cracking guardian dragon, Mushu (voiced by Mark Moseley), realizes that if Mulan's marriage takes place, he is out of a job and so he undertakes his "18-phase master plan" of relationship sabotage to breakup the happy couple. Most of the film's jokes come from Moseley's Mushu (as quick-witted as Eddie Murphy's earlier performance), while a trio of prankish soldiers provide additional comic relief. While the film's overall effort is not as sensational as the original, it offers solid family entertainment, healthy female role models, and a handful of catchy songs. --Lynn Gibson

1 out of 5 stars Don't bother.......2007-11-05

What happened? Have all the Disney storywriters snuffed it over the course of the last three years? Have the animators gone blind? In short, what happened to Mulan?

I think Mulan was the last Disney movie deserving the title of a "classic". And epic, funny, dramatic, engaging and colourful movie. This sequel is not much of a movie, but when you compare it to the "proper" film, there is not many positive things to say about it.

To begin with the story, I have to say that I find it incredibly lacking. The structure is boring and the characters have changed from versatile and loveable to static, boring and overdone.

The colourful and not to mention beautiful visuals are gone, and we are left with something so boring and at times even crude, that it is hardly worthy of the title "movie".

Sequels are hardly ever great (with the exception of the lion king 2). but this is such a crude movie, bereft of all the diversity we have come to expect from Disney, that all in all, I would reccommend you to not bother watching this, it would be a complete waste of time.

3 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Enjoyable - But poor Mushu!.......2006-02-03

Disney sequels are hardly ever found to be as good as the first film (unless they're made by PIXAR) so I approached this without any high expectations. Nevertheless despite a weak storyline and a slightly disappointing ending this movie was quite enjoyable. I must agree Mulan 2 was very mushy in places but I think that what gave it the majority of its charm. The songs weren't too bad either, but they sure injected a barrelfull of nastiness into Mushu. I swear he wasn't THAT selfish in the first movie!

Recommended for the lovebird within all of us. Pity they never used that deleted scene with the fight in the real feature, it was neat.

5 out of 5 stars better than i expected.......2005-02-28

this film had me chuckling throughout, the characters were true to their originals and my three children were completely engrossed.

enough of a story to keep adults interested and really fun songs for the kids.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not as good as original.......2005-02-21

The storyline is a bit weak and while the animation and characters are as good as the original, they lack some of the sparkle. This will appeal to the younger crowd much more than the original movie. Most Disney movies these days have an adult appeal, but this one lacks it. I will keep it for my niece and nephews to enjoy until thay outgrow it.

3 out of 5 stars eagerly awaited but falls short of the original.......2005-01-26

this came as a great shame. i think mulan is one of the best disney films made even though it did not recieve as much attention as, say, the lion king.

ive found with most of the disney sequels that they lack the sparkle of their predecessors and it almost seems as if disney has a lesser group of workers who get to deliver the 'straight-to-video' sequels. i wanted the story of mulan and shang to live up to the expectations we were left feeling when the first one finished, sadly it didnt.

the story deals with the emperors' daughters who are being married off to gain an alliance, and it is mulan and shangs job to deliver them across china. to anyone who loves disney id recommend they get this purely to have a complete collection. ive watched the film twice and i dont think il watch it again for a long time, whereas the first one i could watch every other day. its very sad because disney could have made it so much better.

4 out of 5 stars 2 too much!.......2004-12-23

I doubt you will find a better Disney film of recent times than Mulan and yet it seems to travel quite quietly in terms of the other films produced by them.
Mulan is a story from Disney carrying the morals of family, acceptance and of being true to yourself.
The main character , being a young girl, unable to find acceptance in Empirial China, will appeal to girls more than boys, despite the morals carrying universal importance.
Mulan is a great story for any young girl to enjoy.
Mulan 2 on the other hand is why this product has 4 stars instead of 5. As with nearly all Disney sequels it is made for DVD/video and therefore lacks what makes Mulan great. Of course, there is a heartwarming story, and all the voices but Eddie Murphey seem to have returned, they just forgot the zest of what made Mulan great.
I will not get much use from Mulan 2 now I have watched it, but I will continue to watch Mulan for a long time to get a boost and that "feel-good" smile!
