5 out of 5 stars Jim Carrey at his best. Excellent Xmas Film.......2007-12-07

This film is hillarious.
The Grinch is a green hairy fella who lives with his dog. He hates Christmas and all things nice.
I have watched this film so many times, and i still laugh out loud every time.
I highly recommend this film to anyone who wants a funny, feel good Christmas movie, to watch with all the family.

4 out of 5 stars Puttin' on the Seuss.......2006-12-13

Many kids
Enjoy Christmas
They like it a lot

And this film
Is about the Grinch
Who did not

The film gives the background, and fills in some blanks
The Grinch as a child was subjected to pranks
He fancied a Who, with the name Martha May
He tried to impress her and to his dismay
They laughed at his efforts, his gift and his face
So he destroyed the classroom and fled from that place

Then,
He moved to Mount Crumpet
And made him a home
While the green hairy creature seethed under the dome
Until one cold day at the town Christmas party
When young Cindy Lou showed him how to be hearty
Then Mayor May-Who went and spoiled all the fun
By taunting the Grinch 'til he came all undone

He went up his mountain, and he started scheming
And when he was through he was smiling and beaming
He'd ruin their Christmas; he knew what to do
Revenge is the sweetest when it's overdue
If you've read the story you know how it ends
How the Grinch stole that Christmas from his former friends

So what happened next?
I won't give it away
This Christmas this movie will show every day
So if you're a Grinch you can run, but not hide
As you try to stifle the feeling inside
Just gather the kids for a clean yuletide treat
Merry Christmas to all!
(Now this poem's complete)

4 out of 5 stars Jim Carrey at his Over The Top best.......2006-01-12

This is one of those films that divides opinions. For some it's rubbish, for others it's a masterpiece. I veer towards the latter viewpoint - but with a few reservations.

First, this is a Ron Howard film and as such, has to be accepted as a film with a great sense of identity and even better storytelling. Jim Carrey was made for this part and his performance as the gruesome Grinch is extraordinary - full of caperings, facial contortions and madcap explosions of gutteral grunts and cackles. However - even he is very nearly acted off the screen by 'Max' his dog, played by 'Kelley' who quite rightly gets third billing when the credits roll.

The story is well known and I see no sense in providing yet another precis, save to say that the only really gross part is when the Whos of Whoville virtually force-feed the Grinch with food during part of their celebration. This is just a bit too much and is way more repulsive than the pile of garbage that makes up most of the Grinch's lair. This particular scene may just make the film a bit unacceptable for very young children.

A lot of praise also has to go to Anthony Hopkins who's interspersed readings of Dr Seuss's text is so well done and so central to the storytelling.

And when it comes to defining 'cuteness', Taylor Momsett as 'Cindy Lou Who' is absolutely perfect. She not only looks the part but is also one heck of a good actress. She plays the central character of the little girl who wants to trust the Grinch with absolute conviction - and without all the overblown sweetness that so often characterises childrens' parts in so many American films. Her song is perhaps the film's one lapse into maukishness, but this can be forgiven.

Accept this film as a fairytale fantasy which tells a story that is really a fantastical re-interpretation of Dickens' 'Christmas Carol' --- not in terms of ghosts, but in terms of a character who hates himself and Christmas and then learns not only what Christmas really should mean, but that he has both a heart and the ability to love others.

Oh - and be sure to watch the extra features which explain how the make-up was achieved.

1 out of 5 stars typical american film.......2005-12-26

lots of crashing, bashing and smashing, a beutiful story was turned into a typical american film as the magic of the story was stolen by the greedy filmmakers. nothing like the original story nor the cartoon. therefore, if you like the grinch or xmas do not watch this film, because you'll get disappointed, a lot.

5 out of 5 stars The Grinch.......2005-11-28

the grinch is a green monster, but the film is very funny, and is full of christmas spirit, it is very good and i would definaly recomend it. the jokes are all funny and there is no boring part in it. it has all the good qualities of a fantastic movie. Jim Carry, plays an excelnt grinch and portrays the book very well. the story is about a monster who hates christmas and lives at the top of mount crumpit, and at the bottom lies the small town of whoville, the home of the whoos and the grinch decides to steel chrismas from them as they love it more than another holiday. it has all the good qualities and i wound just like to say BUY IT!

How The Grinch Stole Christmas [1966]

Amazon.co.uk Review

To heck with the kids--this is one of the best Christmas presents you can give yourself. Adapted from the children's book by Dr Seuss, this charming story is one to watch every holiday season. It is just edgy enough to help you forget the more cloying aspects of Christmas. It is also sweet enough to remind you of the reason for all that holiday cheer. Animation genius Chuck Jones directed this 1966 television production featuring the voice of Boris Karloff as the mean greenie. Bitter and selfish, the Grinch decides to steal Christmas away from the Whos, sweet little folk at the bottom of his mountain that is his home. When little Cindy Loo Who returns his hateful act with kindness, she melts the old miser's heart. There are many reasons to watch this: inventive wordplay, Karloff's impressive narration and a very memorable soundtrack. --Rochelle O'Gorman

5 out of 5 stars Chuck Jones and Boris Karloff - Do the Whose - An English Perspective.......2008-03-04

Need I say more? Dr. Seuss, directed by Chuck Jones and narrated by Boris Karloff!

It is a faithful re-telling of Dr. Seuss's classic story that copies the art and most importantly retains the word play. It even has some good songs if you like that kind of thing!

The Grinch, bitter and selfish steals Christmas away from the Whose. Disguising himself as Santa, he sneaks down to the Whose to take everything Christmassy, and everything else. But will that stop Christmas? Is he beyond enjoying the season himself? What happens when little Cindy Loo Who, who returns his spiteful act with an act of kindness itself...

If your only point of reference is the recent film (never mind) this is much (much) better. Who can fail to love the Cat in the Hat; the way this is presented...

This disc also includes another cartoon (by the same team) from a Dr. Seuss book, Horton Hears a Who, which is due for cinema release soon...

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Christmas film ever!!.......2007-12-05

That really is all that can be said about this film. It simply is the most amazing Christmas story that has ever been told. My parents loved it, I loved it (i'm 28 and still make sure that i watch it at least three times every Christmas) and my kids love it. I'm pretty sure that their kids will love it as well. Its just such a fantastic story that really tells all about the spirit of Christmas...

5 out of 5 stars This disc is a cinch you can't go wrong with the Grinch!,.......2007-06-29

"How the Grinch Stole Christmas" is a Christmas classic that usually receives repeated viewings in my household. The Grinch is a timeless tale of tolerance, discised as a fantasy. It's the perfect way to put your Little Cindy Lou Who to bed on Christmas Eve, or any night of the year. "Hurton Hears A Who" is another delightful story, which will be especially popular with animal lovers. The animated adaptations of these two stories are a "hateful" of fun! Here's more on each of the shorts, because a person is a person no matter how small and you deserve some good protect information.

You can keep your Frosty the Snowman, Rudoplh the Red Nosed Reindeer, and all the rest. Just let me have my Grinch. Quite simply, this is the best movie that money can buy- a wonderful gift and you never can have too many Grinch movies. Any family should own this movie. After all, who can resist this tale of selfishness conquered by love? Not me, that's for sure. I'm not really into seeing the Jim Carrey version; nothing can top this Dr. Seuss masterpiece. Not even Hollywood.

The Grinch is a mean one, and your kids will think YOU'RE mean if you don't stuff their stocking with this. It's collectively a perfect disc, and kids will be excited to hear that the soundtracks to both films appear unabridged on a single disc. This is a very special DVD release sure to satisfy the ones who aren't getting a lump of coal this year....

The Grinch, who lives just north of Whoville, is tired of listening to their Christmas celebration each year. But this year, he’s going to do something about it. Disguising himself as Santa, he sneaks down into the town to take everything Christmassy, and everything else, from them. But will that stop Christmas from coming? Is he beyond enjoying the season himself?

What can I say; this is a great holiday special. There were only a handful I had to watch every year growing up, and this is one of them. That’s extended to my adult Decembers as well. It keeps the story simple, not trying to expand it needlessly like the recent live action movie did. And the songs add to the fun, especially “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch.” That song alone is worth watching the special for.

This DVD is a great way to own this classic. The picture and sound are good. I can’t really tell that much difference in how the Grinch is supposed to look, and to me this is a minor issue anyway. The extras are a mixed bag. The audio commentary isn’t that great because it’s obvious that they really don’t have that much to say. However, the special about the making of the cartoon and the separate interview about writing the songs are both interesting.

This disc also includes another cartoon from a Dr. Seuss book, HORTON HEARS A WHO. I had never seen this special before I bought the disc, but I’m not a fan of it. Not sure why because I like the book. Maybe if I’d seen it as a kid I’d feel differently.

Ultimately, the reason to get this DVD is the classic Christmas special that headlines the disc. Watching it always brings the warm fuzzies of Christmas past for a visit. You can’t go wrong getting it.

5 out of 5 stars Christmas just isn't Christmas without the Grinch.......2001-11-28

I first watched "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" when I was a little girl and was mesmerised by it. It soon became a tradition to watch it every year in our house as I'm sure it was with a lot of houses in North America. I hope it will become a firm favourite over here. I believe they should have shown this film to the population over here first before they released " The Grinch" as it is closer to the original story by Dr. Seuss. It probably would have been more successful at the box office than it was. I believe it has the same morality as Dicken's " A Christmas Carol" but for the younger generation.

    Amazon.co.uk Review

Jim Carrey is up to all his old tricks (and some nifty new ones) in The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, a live-action film of Dr Seuss's holiday classic. Under a thick carpet of green-dyed yak fur and wonderfully expressive Rick Baker makeup, he commands the title role with equal parts madness, mayhem, pathos and improvisational genius, channelling Grinchness through his own screen persona so smoothly that fans of both Carrey and Dr Seuss will be thoroughly satisfied. Adding to the fun is a perfectly pitched back-story sequence (accompanied by Anthony Hopkins's narration) that explains how the Grinch came to hate Christmas, with a heart "two sizes too small". Ron Howard proves a fine choice for the director's chair with a keen balance of comedy, sentiment and light-hearted Seussian whimsy. Production designer Michael Corenblith gloriously realises the wackiness of Whoville architecture, and his rendition of the Grinch's Mt Crumpit lair is a marvel of cartoonish, subterranean grime. Then there's Cindy Lou Who (Taylor Momsen), the thoughtful imp who rallies her village to recapture the pure spirit of Christmas and melts the gift-stealing Grinch's cold, cold heart. You've even got a dog (the Grinch's good-natured mongrel, Max) who's been perfectly cast, so what's not to like about this dazzling yuletide movie? The production gets a bit overwhelmed by its own ambition, and the citizens of Whoville (including Jeffrey Tambor, Christine Baranski, Molly Shannon and Bill Irwin) pale in comparison to Carrey's inspired lunacy, but who cares? If a film can unleash Jim Carrey at his finest, revamp the Grinch story and still pay tribute to the legacy of Dr Seuss, you can bet it qualifies as rousing entertainment. (Ages five and older.) --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com.

On the DVD: You'd be hard pushed to cram any more special features on to this disc: as well as four deleted scenes, there's over an hour of behind the scenes featurettes. From a documentary about the stunts, the Oscar-winning make-up and how the team visually translated Dr Suess' festive tale to the screen, to a segment on the visual effects and CGI, allowing you to follow the filmmaker's process from beginning to end. And just when you think you have filled up on Grinchy extras there's another menu with the cinema trailer, "Wholiday" recipes, statistics about the film, cast and crew biographies, a trailer for the PlayStation game and the Faith Hill music video "Where are you Christmas". In a bid not to exclude the kids in this DVD bonanza, the Grinch's canine chum takes you through "Max's Playhouse" including interactive games and music, Dress the Grinch, a read-along story and a rhyming game. The candy-cane colours of the Christmas-obsessed town of Whoville shine brightly in anamorphic widescreen; the Dolby 5.1 Soundtrack will fill your house with festive cheer; and the intelligent commentary from Ron Howard give you some great behind the scenes info. --Kristen Bowditch

2 out of 5 stars Sell out cinema.......2007-12-03

The Grinch feels like a movie made for two reasons: to cash in on Christmas. And to cash in on Dr Seuss.

The movie lacks charm. Nothing really works within it. Carrey's performance is tolerable, but I think Seuss would be mortified at how they've portrayed his character. The Whos of Whoville are some of the creepiest make-up jobs I've ever seen. Although I'm not surprised they made it screen looking this eerie, since Ron Howard is the director, and I've yet to be impressed by anything he's put on screen.

The one saving grace of this film is some really nice portrayals of Christmas-y landscapes. They do a great job of evoking that warmth and wonder of Christmas season.

Aside from that, this is a pretty bad film, and the over-sentimentality is almost nauseatting. Seriously, no movie ever need be this mawkish. I didn't enjoy this film much at all.

    1 out of 5 stars total rubbish!.......2005-10-31

This film was a complete and total disappointment. I was so bored I fell asleep through the majority of the film. The best bit is at the very beginning as the story unfolds but after that ....a wash out! I never want to see this film again!

5 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised by its brilliance!.......2003-12-31

I'm not a fan of Jim Carrey and the fact that he was the star of this movie put me off it. However, hearing good reviews from family I decided to bite the bullet and watch it. I was astounded! Here I was laughing out loud - to a Jim Carrey film! I couldn't believe it!

This is really fantastic - a word I thought I would never use in relation to Carrey. The whole film is a treat and will certainly get you in a Christmassy mood and in touch with what is important in life.

Buy it and laugh till the tears run down your cheeks!

5 out of 5 stars See it, see it, see it!!.......2003-12-27

~"The Grinch that stole christmas" was one of my favourite childhood books, and for that reason I was dubious about this movie. I'm a big Jim Carrey fan and all, but I didn't think a film would capture the essence of the story (The essential Grinch-ness?) or would maybe be to saccharine.
    I shouldn't have worried.
The jokes hit the spot every time. There is a bit of adult humour, sure, there is also quite a bit of toilet humour but it works. Believe me, I know. I've watched it at least twice~~ a week since I got it four months ago. There is nothing too disgusting and there are some on the floor laugh-out-loud moments. Carrey is fantastic as the Grinch, turning in an affecting performance and making the watcher care about the character who is, in effect, the bad guy.
Taylor Momsen as Cindy is easily the best choice for this role. Maybe not exactly the Cindy Lou of the book, but she makes the part her own.
The rest of the cast bring substance to the characters the play, even~~ though~~ they don't really have a lot of screen time. The eccentric Seuss-ian world is brought to life in a mix of colour, noise (NOISE, NOISE, NOISE, NOISE!), and classic performances.
If you like Carrey, you'll love this. If you don't, give it a try.
Who knows? This film could change your entire outlook.~

3 out of 5 stars Carrey in overdrive (apparently the only gear he has).......2003-12-27

Being no fan of Jim Carrey, I expected to thoroughly detest this movie, and I didn't. It was watchable - a mite hypocritical, perhaps, being a (somewhat) buried morality tale about the crass commerciality of Christmas Present (if you'll excuse the pun), but all the same aimed to cash in on the Christmas cinema market.

Jim Carrey is, despite three inches of latex, fur and green spray paint, distressingly recognisable as Jim Carrey, and hardly recognisable as Dr Suess' Grinch: as hilarious as Jim Carrey usually is - if you like Jim Carrey - but not quite as irritating as Jim Carrey can be - if you don't - since the green prosthetics severly inhibit his annoying tendency to gurn.

Other than that, it's a fairly jaunty Christmas Tale, saved from utter unctuousness by a welcome vein of sardonism, but otherwise it should be left at that.

            Product Description

As stated on the sleeve: You better watch out! He's green, he's mean and he hates Christmas! The Grinch is a bad tempered hairy green creature, who lives inside a cave top Mount Crumpit, overlooking the village of Whoville. As the whos of Whoville frantically prepare for their yuletide celebrations, The Grinch decides to put a stop to Christmas once and for all, and steals all their presents and decorations on Christmas Eve...only to finally come to learn that the true spirit of Christmas goes much deeper than tinsel and toys. The hilarious Jim Carrey spectacularly brings The Grinch to life in this magical live-action comedy which is based on the wonderfully quirky and well loved book "Dr Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas".

Contains over one hour of who-mongous extra features!
