Amazon.co.uk Review

This gorgeous adaptation of Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic children's story is well worth watching with the whole family. Produced for Canadian television, it's one of those rare productions that actually sticks to the book and even enhances it through first-rate performances and an excellent script. Set on bucolic Prince Edward Island in the late 19th century, Anne of Green Gables is the story of Anne Shirley, an imaginative and headstrong orphan. When brother and sister Marilla and Mathew Cuthbert decide to adopt an orphan boy to help Matthew work the farm, they are astonished when Anne arrives at the train station by mistake. "What use is she to us?" grumbles the gruff Marilla. "We might be of some use to her", answers Matthew, who has taken an instant liking to the talkative Anne. As Anne grows up, her adventures are both hilarious and moving. It's a delight to watch as she forms a friendship with the beautiful Diana and her admirer--the dashing Gilbert Blythe--then dyes her hair green, cracks a slate over Gilbert's head when he calls her "Carrots", and finds a sympathetic teacher who encourages her to attend college. Richard Farnsworth is perfect as the shy and gentle bachelor Matthew, who confides to Anne that he never went courting because "I would have had to say something". Colleen Dewhurst delivers a nuanced and powerful performance as Marilla, a seemingly cold-hearted spinster whose no-nonsense exterior conceals a warm heart. And as Anne, Megan Follows strikes the perfect note, maturing from freckle-faced orphan to elegant and poised young woman. --Elisabeth Keating

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Film!.......2007-05-19

Red haired orphan Anne Shirley is adopted by brother and sister, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, who wanted a boy, and were amazed when Anne turned up. However they ended up falling in love with Anne, and they're not the only ones. The dashingly handsome Gilbert Blythe loves Anne the moment he sees her, but after one regretful moment, where he teases Anne and calls her 'Carrots', she smashes her slate over his head and refuses to talk to him! After saving her from drowning and giving up his school post for her, however, she decides to forgive him, and they become friends. But that's not enough for Gilbert, he adores her! Set on the beautiful Prince Edward Island, this lovely film sees brave, high spririted Anne grow from a chatterbox child, to a mature teenager. Watch her make friends and foes and settle into the sweet little town of Avonlea.
This is one of the sweetest, funniest, most romantic films I've ever seen. I love Anne, she's my idol! Watch it, you won't regret it!

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Family Film!.......2007-04-28

Anne of Green Gables is based on the books by L.M Montgomery. It is about an orphaned girl called Anne who is sent to live on Prince Edward Island in Canada with an elderly brother and sister called the Cuthberts.

They are disappointed when they see Anne - they'd requested an orphan boy to help with the farm work and thye've ended up with a lively, melodramatic orphan girl with red hair! Added to that, their neighbours don't want then to take an orphaned child at all. Haven't the Cuthberts read the horror stories in the newspapers, the neighbours ask!

How Anne and the Cutherberts grow to love each other and how she adapts to her new community is the subject of this dvd.

The tale is by turns funny, touching, occasionally sentimental and just perfect for the whole family - especially if you have daughters.
Anne is similar to Laura in Little House on the Prairie, but personally I think that Anne of Green Gables is better. As a character, she is feisty and determined with a deep love of literature and melodrama. She faces some prejudice but she overcomes it to become a much loved member of the community.

If you haven't seen Anne of Green Gables before then you're really in for a treat. If you're trying to encourage your children to read then it's worth following it up with Montgomery's book of the same name. The stories were written about 100 years ago, but are still a delight for children to read.

It's a lovely story - my 30-something brother watched part of the dvd with us and even he laughed out loud on some occasions, so I think it's perfect for all the family, young and old.

Anne of Green Gables - together with The Sequel and The Continuing Story - have been a joy to view. From the glorious scenery together with superb acting, this is a must for young and old viewers alike. If you haven't yet seen Anne of Green Gables, then you most certainly should now.

5 out of 5 stars Family favourite.. .......2006-09-08

I have 2 daughters (12 and 10) who have recently read the books, whilst my wife read them as a child. I've not read the books... but we all loved this (and also the "sequel"). My girls tell me it is quite true to the books. Even though it is long (well over 3 hours) we were all engrossed, and time flew by. In terms of technical quality the DVD isn't great - but the film itself is.

3 out of 5 stars Why are there no subtitles?????.......2006-05-12

I have grown up with Anne of Green Gables, having first read the books from the age of 12, and collected all 8 books in the "Anne" Series. I was lucky enough to see the Anne of Green Gables and the Sequel televised on Channel 4 a few years later, and being hearing impaired, was able to watch and follow them as they carried subtitles. I adored both films and have longed for the day I would be able to get hold of them on DVD but when I did, I was horribly disappointed...the DVD's don't have subtitles! I was simply dumbfounded, I don't think I have ever yet purchased a DVD that does not have the option of subtitles for the hard of hearing. I was very disappointed that something so basic as this should be left out. It is a major oversight by the manufacturers and one which I sincerely hope they will take steps to rectify in the very near future. I should add that the omission of subtitles is the only reason I have rated this with only three stars, instead of the five stars I would have given it otherwise.
