1 out of 5 stars Butchered like a factory bred turkey at Christmas.......2007-08-28

The "classic porn movie " says the blurb on the sleeve jacket except it isn't. This is an edited version , or rather a version that has been re-cut so all the real porn has been left on the cutting room floor. This of course is bad enough if you want to watch a porn film but the film has not so much been re-cut but butchered with a hedge trimmer.
Whole scenes have all the hardcore stuff snipped out and the remaining action is reassembled in a series of scenes played over and over again with no sense of chronology so for instance the shower scene which at the start has four blokes in it is suddenly culled to two for a while then the original quartet suddenly appear again and oh there's the fifteenth shot of that bloody shower head. Its more an advert for communal shower accessories than anything.
Anyone wanting to relive the experience of viewing again the film they remember from their formative years -this was the first proper porn film I ever saw -or just wanting to watch the thing for the first time is going to be severely disappointed with this effort.
The film can be viewed as perspicacious indicator of the burgeoning trend for world capitalism but that is undoubtedly giving it too much credit as it's just more than likely an excuse for lots of nubile women (Bambi Woods is quite spectacular) to get their kit off and press the flesh .It is a porn classic but this version isn't classic and could hardly be classed as porn. Its a porn film with no porn and as such is about as much use as a one legged man in an arse kicking contest.

1 out of 5 stars Ghost of an infamous movie.......2005-06-19

The world of the pornographic movie has usually been somewhat secretive and sleazy; few products of the industry have gone on to become legends - "Debbie Does Dallas" goes way beyond that stage. The film is practically iconic. It reached across and around the world in 1978 to become one of the best selling porn movies of all time, much aided by stories of Mob influence, FBI pursuit, etc.

It comes as a disappointment, therefore, to discover that this version has literally been neutered. The sex scenes and nudity have been edited to the point they are almost suitable for showing at Sunday School. As a piece of eroticism, this version barely gets above lukewarm. All it's likely to arouse is your anger. As a piece of pornography, the best this DVD can achieve is stimulation of your nostalgia quotient. Frankly, nostalgia is the last thing you want in pornography.

"Debbie Does Dallas", in its heyday, was a rollicking tale of a cheerleader who'd won a contest and was heading off to join the big league ... only she needed the money to make the trip. Fortunately, she has a bunch of nubile, cheerleader pals who'll help raise the money ... and the viewers' blood pressure ... and, so we're led to believe, sacrifice their innocence in the process. Ah, if only we all had friends like that! Not the most sophisticated of plots but, in the world of pornography, this is on a par with Shakespeare.

The star of the show, innocent young Debbie (Bambi Woods), is also believable. She is very pretty, very sexy, and not airbrushed, waxed, pneumatically inflated or surgically enhanced. She, and her friends, all have girl-next-door looks. They appear to be real young women, not glamorous (or hard bitten) porn stars. You could imagine them going to your school, working in your high street shops, living somewhere on your avenue. The film was exciting, sexually exciting, because it had a quality of reality which few porn movies achieve.

As an exercise in nostalgia, then, this DVD will stimulate a couple of memories. If that's all you require, then it may be worth watching. But consider the editing! It's not the erasure of all the actual pornographic elements which is the worst crime perpetrated by this DVD. To fill in the gaps, bland shots of bare backsides and excited female faces are simply repeated over and over, padding out the film to an acceptable length.

Rekindles a few memories ... but it's cheerless. Bambi Woods apparently disappeared shortly after the making of the film. Rumours of her impoverished death abound. She certainly didn't find much good cheer in her starring role. Ultimately, this DVD is a reminder that pornography exploits and uses people (as does so much of the entertainment industry). Rent it rather than buy it, and pause for a moment or two to spare a thought for 'Bambi' - I hope the rumours are false and that she found happiness somewhere!

1 out of 5 stars Beware, this version is edited for kids.......2005-05-27

Don't even think about buying or renting this DVD. You will be annoyed with scenes that are repeated again and again in order to keep the total length of the film up to the original. All "action" scenes have been erased completely though.

Like many of the dissapointed viewers, I purchased this DVD to relive my youth remembering the great version that I watched all those years ago.

This was nothing like it. It was absolute garbage. It had been totally destroyed and edited so much I could have shown it to my children.

I bought the DVD from a good distributor. The DVD was advertised quite clearly as sexually explicit, so I had no reason to doubt the authenticity of the DVD. How wrong I was. I was so incensed by it all, I wrote to complain to the distributor and immediately cancelled my long standing membership with them.

All I can say to any potential buyer is save your hard earned cash. Ths is pure crap and should be treated like so. I do not even dare to try and pass my copy on to some other poor unsuspecting victim. I would not want him to waste his time.

The film itself is quite good with plenty of different action both M/F & F/F. However the UK version has been pixelated to achieve certification without leaving most of it on the cutting room floor which is annoying.

    1 out of 5 stars Absolute Rubbish.......2001-10-23

This film - in it's British edited form - has been censored so much it is completely redundant. The method of censoring is to put a big pixellated blob on the screen covering all of the action. There's really no point in buying it.

5 out of 5 stars Much better than given credit for!.......2007-10-19

The original Bambi is a true masterpiece in every way. For me, no other animated film tops it - not even Disney's crowning achievement, The Lion King. It is simply one of the best animated films out there. It's storytelling at its greatest. I heard great things about this sequel and I decided to check it out. I didn't expect it to live up to the original, because I knew it wouldn't. However, it's still a really worthy successor, and here's why.

The animation is breathtaking, especially for a direct-to-video film. It's actually feature film quality, the reason being that Disney had been casting out all of its animators in favour of computers. People who worked on films like Brother Bear suddenly found themselves working on DTV projects. It's a sad truth, and I found this truth to be undertone in the film. Computer animation simply cannot capture the heart and the beauty of this little film. The artwork and backgrounds stay true to that of the original film. However, instead of being done by hand, the backgrounds are made using art programs on the computer. However, this is hardly noticeable.

Storywise, like the original, the plot is simple. It's what happens within the plot that is intense and touching. After his mother's death, Bambi has to be raised by his unwilling father - the Great Prince himself. What results is a very touching story about love and moving on. If Bambi 2 has one really big flaw, it's that there is too much dialogue. The first film only had enough to help you understand each character's personality. In Bambi, actions speak louder than words. But this is made up for the fact that the characters (like Thumper, for example) are hardly different from what they were in the original. This sort of thing is rare in a sequel, and in the given circumstances, this is very well-done here.

The musics are also close to the original, but with a more modern feel. Alison Krauss singing 'There is Life' in the opening accompanies the film very well. There's also music from the original too, which helps keep the emotion and essence of what Bambi is all about.

Now, I believe that most of Walt Disney's original films do NOT need sequels. But I felt that Bambi 2 was a real exception. It does not ruin the original in any way, despite the claims of Disney fanatics who probably haven't even seen it. I think that this is up with The Lion King II as Disney's best direct-to-video sequel. This beats the heck out of Disney's other sequels, Universal's five thousand Land Before Time sequels, the Balto sequels etc. This is a real winner in the world of DTV films, and if you're a fan of the original Bambi, this at least worth watching, and more than once!

Although, there are a few continuity errors with the first film. One example is that in the original, Thumper had five sisters, and in this film there are only four. Perhaps Bambi's mother wasn't the only mortality that winter...

5 out of 5 stars Surprise; an excellent direct-to-video sequel of the classic.......2006-02-11

Like many people who were weaned on the classic animated films made by Walt Disney, I have been less than thrilled by the onslaught of direct-to-video sequels the company has been producing the last dozen years. Starting with "The Return of Jafar" in 1994, we have not only seen sequels to many recent animated films, such as "Beauty and the Beast: Enchanted Christmas" and "Lion King II: Simba's Pride," but direct-to-video follow ups to some of those classic Disney films, as is the case with "Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp's Adventure" and "Cinderella II: Dreams Come True." Consequently, when I sat down to watch "Bambi II" I was fully expecting to be bitterly disappointed. Instead I was pleasantly surprised (actually, I was floored).

"Bambi II" begins with the well-remembered moment from the original when Bambi (voiced by Alexander Gould) is looking for his mother and The Great Prince of the Forest (Patrick Stewart) informs his son that she will not be coming back, and ends with Bambi still a fawn. The beloved characters Thumper (Brendon Baerg) and Flower (Nicky Jones) return, as does Feline (Andrea Bowen), but having more of an impact is a character who only appears briefly in the original, Ronno (Anthony Ghannam), another fawn whose antlers have already come in. Ronno not only keeps calling Bambi a baby and a coward, but is also making moves on Feline. Meanwhile, The Great Prince is having trouble with his new responsibility for raising his young son and teaching him the ways of the forest, and Bambi is trying to impress his father. Neither one of them is succeeding all that well.

Directed by Brian Pimental (who also voices both the Groundhog and the Porcupine), this 2006 direct-to-video release has several things going for it, starting with having Patrick Stewart voice Bambi's father. But the greatest strength is the
story by Pimental and Jeanne Rosenberg with a screenplay by Alicia Kirk inspired by the original story of "Bambi" by Felix Salten. Bambi is trying to learn how to confront his fear and stand up to Ronno and other dangers in the forest. The film never uses the phrase "deer caught in a headlight," but that is what Bambi looks like at times and it is something he needs to overcome. What I liked the best is that there are several moments when father and son start to connect, but it does not quite work out, so that there is actually some character development and not just a sudden happy ending. Overall, there is actually more of a plot here than simply Bambi growing up.

The animation is done in the same style of the original classic, and if it is not as rich in detail the differences are far less than you would expect from a direct-to-video feature. I have always considered "Bambi" to have the most beautiful artwork of any of the Disney films, and this one does not suffer that much in comparison (the animators do seem to like bright yellows more this time around). There is one cutesy animal sung song, "Let's Sing a Gay Little Spring Song," based on Frank Churchill's score for the original film, but most of the songs serve as backdrops for various sequences and are done by some familiar country singers: Alison Krauss' "There is Life," Michelle Lewis' "First Sign of Spring," and Martina McBride's "Through Your Eyes." Anthony Callea performs "The Healing of a Heart" during the closing credits.

The film is shown in "Family-Friendly Widescreen" (1.78:1), which is enhanced for 16 x 9 televisions, and also has a French language track. The bonus features on this DVD consist of a Making-Of featurette, "The Legacy Continues," and a "Bambi's Trivia Track" that can provide a constant stream of pop ups with fun facts as you watch the film. Kids will enjoy "Thumper's Hurry & Scurry Game" and there is also a "Disney Sketch Pad" piece in which Disney animator Andreas Deja teaches us how to draw Thumper.

The end result is a half-step down in quality from the original classic, which is amazing enough to justify rounding up on this one. Granted, no animated film will ever take the place that "Bambi" has in the collective psyche of the millions of youngsters who were devastated when Bambi's mother was killed. Still, "Bambi II" sets the bar pretty high for a sequel (it is certainly good enough that they could have released this to theaters) and we can only hope future direct-to-video offerings will follow suit.

Usually when Disney does a sequel to a much loved film we all go,"Oh dear, here we go again..." and know before we've seen it that it's going to be absolutely awful and pointless and a mockery of the first one. Not so with Bambi 2.

Bambi 2 appears to have been done very carefully, with the animation almost exactly like that of the original Bambi. Even though I'm sure they had to get new people to do the voices of the characters you don't notice the difference; they're cast very well.

The film begins with a beautiful song called "There Is Life" which may persuade me to buy the soundtrack. Even within the first ten minutes of the film I was laughing out loud. There are some really cute and funny parts in the film! (I'll never forget Thumper's "And it's got these eyeees..." You'll understand it when you watch).

As well as making me laugh a lot it made me cry loads at the end (and then the second time I watched it too). This film is definitely worth buying, I absolutely love it.

Perfect Blue [1999] (REGION 1) (NTSC)

        Amazon.co.uk Review

One of the most ambitious animated films to come out of Japan (or anywhere, for that matter), Perfect Blue is an adult psycho-thriller that uses the freedom of the animated image to create the subjective reality of a young actress haunted by the ghost of her past identity. Mima is a singer who leaves her teeny-bop trio to become an actress in a violent television series, a career move that angers her fans, who prefer to see her as the pert, squeaky-clean pop idol. Plagued by self-doubt and tormented by humiliating compromises, she begins to be stalked, in her waking and sleeping moments, by an accusing alter ego who claims to be "the real Mima", until she collapses into madness as her co-workers are brutally slain around her. Director Satoshi Kon, adapting the novel by Yoshikazu Takeuchi, shows us the world from her schizophrenic perspective: days blur, dreams cross over into the waking world, the TV show blends into her real life, until her life merges with her part and she can't separate the ghosts from the real-life stalkers. Though the pat ending sweeps the psychosis and anxiety away with nary an emotional scar, it remains a smart, stylish thriller and one of the most intelligent and compelling uses of animation in recent years. Though tame by the extreme standards of "adult anime", there is nudity and a few sexually provocative scenes, and the animation is detailed and stylised (if somewhat stiff and jerky by Disney standards). --Sean Axmaker

        4 out of 5 stars intense anime.......2007-05-30

I agree that this is no jolly ghibli like experience but then who says that all anime must be. This is a truly deep and dark delve into the human mind in a way that is relevant and very brave. The artistry and overal structure of the film is sublime and as a live action would have won acclaim, yet animate it and people get very uncomfortable. The disturbing moments that do dipict rape are very much fundimental to the reasoning of character development and are not i believe the whim of a director trying to shock. If you can stick with this film and open your mind to see the truth of this film you will be greatly rewarded by what I consider to be the bravest anime out there. You will have to watch a few times to grasp the whole picture of the storyline but thats a bonus in my opinion as who wants to buy something that they get bored with first time through? The only reason that this is not rated a five is because I found it to be a very uneasy experince that Understandably will limit its audience..NOT FOR KIDS..

4 out of 5 stars 18 cert Anime- check before watching!!.......2007-05-08

Ok for those who normally like anime yet were freaked out by the violent and [...] nature of the film shoudl read these guidelines. Hint: the person who watched studio ghibli then this.

U= Universal, safe for children but not with necessarily a childish ideas and concepts. May not have graphic [...] and violence but don't always expect fluff.
PG= Still okay for children, but expect more deep idea and confusing issues. Expect blood, some guts and perhaps people with less clothes on than some would call tasteful.
12= Definately not for under 12's but for 12+ depends on your kids. Much more blood and perhaps some nakedness.
15= Some adults will be shocked with what content that is allowed. Proves that cartoons are NOT always for children. Sometimes complete nakedness, usally female, but not in a [...] way. Much gore.
18= [...], gore, terror, violence, nakedness, profanities...you name it it may have it. These are not porn films but can be mistaken for them, as Japanese animators are quite fearless. When watching an 18 anime, check reviews and description, knowlage is key because seriously these films are NOT for the fient hearted or prudish.

Lets just say "Perfect Blue" deserves its 18 category. If you are intellectually mature then you will appreciate this film.

1 out of 5 stars Dark, sinister and disturbing........2007-04-11

Since picking up most the Studio ghibli titles I thought I'd delve into other anime. I'm starting to wish I hadn't looked at this one. It's certainly not for the fate-hearted. Fair enough it had an 18 certificate but I didn't realise rape and sexul obsession would play key role. Some scenes even though anime, were overally perveted in my opinion and were just an excuse to be made into anime as it is easier to get away with than film.

        Even Manga has its limits.

5 out of 5 stars watch it more then once or pay attentiion!.......2006-08-10

An intelligent film that might not make sense unless you start thinking about all the details, even then some parts are left to your imagination. Through most of it you'll be guessing who the killer is and what is real in mima's confusing disturbed world but never detached from it.This film Looks at fame in a way few people think about.

engaging, disturbing and confusing. This one of the best films (cartoon or real) ever made in my opinion. The ending will blow you away.

        5 out of 5 stars Trippy!.......2006-06-15

This is most definitely one of the strangest films I have seen in my life! I still don't understand it and I must have seen it atleast 20 times!

You spend the first half an hour thinking, 'What? How on earth could this be even slightly relevant.' Perservere because you will spend the rest of the film thinking, 'oh my gosh yeah, with the... and the, where the..' It is strange!

This isn't one of the best drawn animes. The characters aren't particularly beautiful. There are some interesting images that really make an impression on you.

This isn't a sit back and half concentrate film. It's edge of the seat, full attention stuff. Really really fantastic!
