Bastian escapes school bullies one rainy day by hiding in an old used book store. After explaining his predicament to the old clerk Bastian notices a large leather bound book with a symbol of two snakes intertwined into an emblem. Soon after the clerk warns Bastian that this book is not for him Bastian, rushes away with it "borrowing" it, while the clerk is in another room. Taking refuge in the attic of his school Bastian opens the book, and a world of fantasy. Learning that the wonderous, beautiful land of Fantasia is being destroyed by a terrible "Nothing" Bastian is taken deeper into the story. Soon discovering the Childlike Empress is deathly ill, the cause; she needs a new name. A young warrior named Atreyu is called and Bastian follows his adventures, unknowing that he, himself is slowly being written into the mysterious book. Soon realizing that he is now written in the book Bastian realizes that the only one who can save Fantasia is him.

Maybe I'm nit-picking, but Little Bear is very definitely Canadian not American. The accent, to my English ears, is far gentler than the shouty American voices I hear in Dora the Explorer etc. (Maybe it's because I have Canadian relatives and friends). Anyway, LB is a real charmer and my three-year-old son thinks these stories are just great. You can see LB on Nick Jr every night at 6.30.

These are the stories of Little Bear's adventures with his friends which teach him valuable life lessons.

My older children loved Little Bear when it was on television, so I bought the DVD for my younger children now they are at the same age (2 and 3). Unfortunately it doesn't appear to have captured their imagination the same.

The characters are American, and the accent can begin to grate after a while.

This DVD comes in a paper envelope, together with a puzzle book and some felt tip pens. I would have rather spent the money on a proper protective DVD case than the puzzle book and pens though.
