5 out of 5 stars Heads will roll..........2008-02-04

I first seen this film a few years back and if your expecting a bloody slash-torture-fest you most probebly will be best sticking to Freddy Vs Jason or Saw IV as that is not the intention of this film. Although you will see many beheadings and corpses, its very much a mythical detective story. Johnny Depp's humorous cowardly take on Ichabot Crane, a detective searching for the person behind the beheaded corpses turning up all around the small American village of Sleepy Hollow, is a pleasure to watch. The one thing I love about Depp is his ability to make a complete fool out of himself and not having to appear as some hot headed Hollywood pretty boy and I feel that comes across in Sleepy Hollow just as much as it does in Pirates of the Carribean.
Tim Burton once again creates a film with that fantasy tone we all love so much. If you, like me, love Burtons take on fantasy or movies in general this is definately one to pick up and hold as a prize in your movie collection. You wont be dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars Funny and entertaining gothic horror.......2008-01-29

I am a big fan of Tim Burton's films and I would say that Sleepy Hollow has to be my favourite. The film is loosely based on the short story `The Legend of Sleepy Hollow' by Washington Irvine and follows New York police constable Ichabod Crane who is sent to the small village of Sleepy Hollow to prove his scientific detection methods by finding who killed a number of the villages residence. During his investigations he discovers a world of magic and the undead while coming to terms with his own past.

This film contains all the elements of a good Tim Burton film including gothic horror, a brilliantly funny script, beautiful visuals and Johnny Depp. The all-star cast all give near perfect performances especially Depp himself. Some of the special effects were somewhat suspect but the headless horseman itself and the overall mood of the film don't suffer and remain brilliantly dark. Sleepy Hollow is a beautifully made film that should be loved by any fan of Burton's films.

5 out of 5 stars A cracking horror/ old-style crime story. Greatly entertaining stuff!.......2007-12-19

I watched this film one Monday night on 'Film4' when I was bored. I thought I
was in for another ordinary school night in. This film soon brightened things up, however, I was drawn in from the first few minutes. This is a very good interpretation of the legend of 'Sleepy Hollow'. It's packed with excellent actors: Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean, From Hell) he carries the film superbly, Michael Gambon (Open Range, Layer Cake, Gosford Park), Richard Griffiths (History Boys, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy), Miranda Richardson (Blackadder, Harry Potter 4) and Christopher Walken (Click, A View to a Kill), who makes a great addition as the Headless Horseman. A very good film that is enjoyable as an action, a horror, or simply an old-school crime solving thriller. Buy it and enjoy it!

5 out of 5 stars excellent film!!.......2007-12-17

This film is a masterpiece! It involves killing and an investigation to go with it. One of Johnny Depps' best performances.

3 out of 5 stars Not so much horror as pantomime !.......2007-10-07

I was expecting a scary slash-fest...not that those films are my bag incidentally...but I'd heard reports that Sleepy Hollow was a terrific Gothic horror flick.
What it is in fact is a camp horror/pantomime with the brilliant Johnny Depp camping up his character Ichabod Crane as intensively as his Captain Jack Sparrow character in the 'Pirates' trilogy.
Depp's Crane steals the show as a fey detective who is not averse to fainting with shock and expressing distaste at the vulgarity of the situation he finds himself in.
The largely British supporting cast which includes Christopher Lee, Michael Gambon and Miranda Richardson carry on in JD vein, camping it up deliciously !
Richardson in particular is a real 'Cruella de Ville' Panto villain-ess if ever there was one !
Despite the decapitation level going off the scale, the gore is just too OTT to be anything other than stylised and amusing rather than frightening.
The feel is very much in keeping with previous Tim Burton movies and overall it's watchable with some nice moments but hardly a classic.

Starship Troopers [1998]

Amazon.co.uk Review

A gloriously over-the-top treat, Paul Verhoeven's Starship Troopers takes the militaristic moralising of Robert Heinlein's pulp classic and sets about undermining it mercilessly. Johnny Rico (Casper Van Dien) desperately wants to join the Mobile Infantry and kill some Earth-threatening alien bugs. He also desperately wants Carmen (Denise Richards), but only gets to fulfil one ambition in the second of Verhoeven's futuristic satires (also cowritten with his RoboCop scriptwriter Ed Neumeier).

Set in a fascistic future where kids must do military service to qualify as citizens, own property or even have babies, the film's dark Vietnam and Nazi-era parallels are all the more disturbing given its deceptively sunny Beverly Hills 90210 teenage cast (though scenery-chewing veteran Michael Ironside steals the movie as tough-talking Lt Rasczak). The CGI arachnids are among the most convincing and dangerous-looking creatures ever seen on screen, and with the movie clocking up the highest number of blanks ever fired on a film set, it's also pretty loud! Verhoeven went on to be Executive Producer of the Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles animated TV series a couple of years later.

On the DVD: Starship Troopers in this DVD incarnation can now be played continuously on one side of the disc (the original Region 2 release version was that crime against the DVD format, a "flipper"). You'll also feel really spoiled by the extras here: five deleted scenes (approximately six minutes) pad out Carmen's love triangle problems. There are impressive screen tests for Denise Richards and Casper Van Dien (three-and-a-half minutes). An eight-minute featurette zips by with key interviews and fact flinging. And a real treat is three scene developments with layers of FX work explained by Verhoeven. But what makes this DVD essential is the director's enthusiastic commentary alongside screenwriter Ed Neumeier: dissing astrology, making a stand for feminist issues, saying how he went nude to placate the actors for their shower scene, and drooling with praise for his FX team, Verhoeven makes a fascinating statement that "war makes fascists of us all". After a studio disclaimer, and beginning with his reaction to the film's critique in Time Magazine, this is no-holds-barred fun. --Paul Tonks

4 out of 5 stars Still good 10 years later.......2008-01-14

I watched ST on TV the other night having not seen it for a while. I was pleasantly surprised that it still looks good even 10 years later. Despite enjoying the film I had for a long time been critical of the fact that such a technologically advanced society sends lightly armoured foot soldiers in to fight such a deadly enemy. Having watched it again though this makes a lot of sense - human life is far cheaper than developing weapons that are effective. However it does vary a great deal to the Heinlen book it is based on. In this the troopers did have pretty good weaponry so the fight was not always so one sided. All in all though a classic film we will doubtless still be watching in another 10 years.

1 out of 5 stars am i missing the point?.......2008-01-14

i watched this movie on tv a while ago and after having heard good things about it i managed to persuade my parents to watch it to... But... after about half an hour i was shocked at just how cheap this movie is, yh the specail effects are great but the script and acting is awful, its almost unwatchable at times. as i sat on my sofa i slowly slid down trying to hide my face in sheer ebaresment of the film.
i dont understand how u ppl can rate this film 5 starts as its not a bad movie u can love its just a bad movie, simple as that.
total and utter garbage...

3 out of 5 stars An excellent film, but insult to the novel.......2007-10-23

I start off by saying that, as films go, this is great. The acting is suprisingly good, and the action sequnces are a true sight to behold. A real fun film.
But if you read the novel and were expecting something similar you will be disapointed. This film is a completely biased swipe at militarism, with Nazi style uniforms and uncaring officials thrown in at every oppurtunity.
The book is a clever insight into a militaristic society, carefully examining it's pros and cons.
For example, in the film, the soldiers are encouraged to shoot their wounded. The Federation in the book often goes to extreme lengths to save stranded and wounded. Also, there is a reason service is voluntary. The Federation in the film seems to be completely over-the-top, and it seems odd that with such a government service isn't mandatory.

There is of course the degrading of the MI to simple foot-soldiers, but I find that adds to the realism of the film.

Still worth watching. Try to forget about the novel if you want to enjoy it though.

I'd just like to mention that Paul Verheoven didn't even read the book.

4 out of 5 stars A GORY BUT COOL SCI-FI ACTION ADVENTURE.......2007-08-07

Based on the famous Robert A. Heinlein novel, Starship Troopers is set in a world of the future where militarism is the norm, largely because we've discovered alien civilizations of huge insect-like creatures and we're at war with them. The film follows a quartet of high school friends as they make their varied ways through the military.

Starship Troopers is both a tongue-in-cheek satire of society and an intense sci-fi/action/war film filled with horror-like insect monsters and a healthy dose of graphic gore. That's a genre combination that will not please all viewers, especially if the tongue-in-cheek humor goes over their heads. For those more in tune with the genre melding, Starship Troopers promises a quick, edge-of-your-seat ride from the first moments to the last.

The film can be looked at in three sections, with slight crossovers from one section to another. The first is focused on the social satire. The cultural differences of the future are given in mostly indirectly, and occasionally, the point is what hasn't changed, or perhaps what is currently (per the film's setting) in vogue as a retro element. The second and third sections could be seen as a sci-fi Platoon (1986), with the second section focused on military basic training and the third focused on wartime. Like Platoon, the basic training scenes show order and a clear sense of purpose, while the wartime scenes show comparative chaos.

That the film could be compared to something like Platoon shows that although director Paul Verhoeven and screenwriter Edward Neumeier are aware that the material could easily be seen as absurd, they have the chops to make it believable and suspenseful at the same time.

This is not to say that Starship Troopers is a rip-off of any other movie. The film-making here is highly original, and we could almost see the entire film as a computer-based CNN-styled collection of wartime newsreels of the future. It remains quick, witty and intense throughout. My only regret is that they didn't incorporate Yes' song Starship Troopers in the score somehow.

4 out of 5 stars A film which achieves what it set out to be: a whole lot of fun.......2007-07-28

This film has nothing to set it apart from other films, nothing to make the audience go 'wow, what an incredible movie'; the acting is nothing above average, the direction also, but the one thing that this film does succeed in doing is putting a smile on the faces of those who watch it. It is not a film which will have a deep and lasting impression on you, it has no true moral beyond that of survival and determination in the face of adversity, but it is an extremely enjoyable fun-fest with some fight sequences which will delight and a story which is altogether complete.

4 out of 5 stars CGI is very good, non-cgi is slightly grainy.......2008-01-03

Good film. This is probably one of my best blu-ray discs. The space scenes are very crisp and look superb. The non-cgi scenes are slightly grainy but still not as bad as some 'remastered' blu-ray discs I have seen.
If you liked the film and have it on standard dvd and have a blu-ray player I would recomend buying this and getting rid of your standard copy. The improvement is definitly worth it.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good for it's age.......2007-08-28

There are 43 Amazon reviews on the standard definition version of this film so I will comment on the Blu-ray aspects only. I did not expect to see such an old film come out in high definition format. This movie is largely made with computer generated graphics which probably explains why the image quality is so high. The many action scenes are pin sharp with vivid colours and no motion blurring. Looks amazing and even if you don't love the movie worth having to demonstrate the full benefits of high definition. When the non computer generated scenes are viewed there is a slight but noticable drop in image quality with slight grainyness hence only the 4 star rating.

Casper [1995]

Amazon.co.uk Review

The 1995 family film Casper tries to put a fun spin on the story of a paranormalist and widower (Bill Pullman) who moves into a new house with his daughter (Christina Ricci) and meets up with the ghost of a dead little boy. Based on the comic book about Casper the friendly ghost, the film is a dreary series of awkward interactions between live actors and computer effects, and you can almost see Pullman and Ricci reconsidering the project while on camera. A few cameo appearances from uncredited stars help things a bit. But there's no way, based on this film, that one could have guessed that its director, Brad Silberling, would go on to make the exceptional drama City of Angels. This special edition DVD release includes a director's commentary and exhaustive 47-minute behind-the-scenes documentary, plus games and DVD-ROM content for the kids. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Spook Time again.......2007-09-19

This film is Capser based on the Cartoon Ghost which has Christina Ricci from The Addams family films as Wednesday Addams and Kat in this.

I think she is hauntling perfect for this role not to say sexy also this film is far better the the next and the first sequal are know for being rubbish but some film disporve that Star Trek is the perfect prove of that and so does this film it is great so the double pack is great but the porblem for us in the UK is Region 1 I think the PS 3 or a US Player would solve your problems with that but as that is expensive just but as stand alone discs.

Great for a few hours of escapism plus Amazon can porbably supply you with The Addams family films which would match with this film nicely with Kat (Wednesday Addams)

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2007-05-10

This is one of the most entertaining family films ever made. It's brilliantly funny and also very moving. Yes it has a plot!!! There are great cameos from Mel Gibson, Dan Akroyd and Clint Eastwood, and the SFX are great too. Bill Pullman and Christina Ricci are a great father / daughter team. This puts many of Hollywood's recent efforts to shame with its delightful charm and it's not too long either.

5 out of 5 stars Well entertaining!.......2007-04-16

This movie is really entertaining, fun and enjoyable for people of pretty much any age!

5 out of 5 stars My Favourtite Childrens film of all time.......2007-02-02

Ok so I am the wrong side of 12 but I just love this movie, I first bought it on Laserdisc and recommended it to a few mates and at least 10 of them went out and bought it. The film does not suffer a single second of wasted opportunities and Bill Pullman is amazing in his role as is Christina Ricci. The humour is bright and sparkly and the effects are brilliant. The film centres around a shrink who is trying to find some closure after his wife died and has turned to looking to the afterlife to do so. Along the way there are 2 fantastic villains who are trying to steal the treasure form the haunted house and need to be able to use the magic potion to bring people back from the dead. This really knocks spots of Ghostbusters and has no danger of ever aging in my mind, I still watch it every so often and I am now 39. Just an amazing film.

4 out of 5 stars Cute, sweet, and very funny.......2005-12-31

You would think Casper would just be a silly little film that only a child could possibly love. Surprisingly, though, it's actually a very entertaining film that even manages to produce a poignant moment or two in between scenes of regular hilarity. The fact that Christina Ricci is in the movie doesn't hurt either – that's the main reason I wanted to see it. The whole cast is actually quite good, even Bill Pullman (who I'm grudgingly beginning to halfway like for some crazy reason – and yes, you do get one of those vintage Pullman turnaround shots before the movie ends). The non-human characters really steal the show, though, as Casper's uncles Stinkie, Stretch, and Fatso are a real hoot and steal every scene they're in.

As far as the story goes, you've got this old abandoned mansion in Maine where Casper lives with his three obnoxious uncles. Casper is of course quite lonely, and his uncles will not tolerate humans at all. Then the old dude who owns the condemned place dies and leaves the house to his greedy daughter Carrigan (Cathy Moriarty), who comes running in search of a hidden treasure. She and her friend/partner in crime (Eric Idle) don't last more than a few seconds in the house. With a little secret encouragement from Casper, however, Carrigan finds out about a ghost shrink named Dr. James Harvey (Bill Pullman) and invites him to the house. Casper is overjoyed because he has a potential new friend in Harvey's daughter Kat (Christina Ricci). There are several little subplots that play out rather well, but it's mainly just a matter of sitting back and letting all the ghostly hi-jinx work their magic. That's not to say the movie isn't sad at times, as you can't help but feel sorry for poor lonely Casper.

I thought the animation and digital effects were done really well; it would have been so easy to go way over the top, but ILM knows what they are doing. It can't be easy to work with characters you can't even see (except via their stand-ins during filming), but I found the interaction between ghosts and humans to be very natural and believable. It's really a great family film because kids will surely enjoy all of the ghostly antics, adults will find themselves laughing along more often than not, and the movie definitely has a heart. You can also have fun spotting all of the many celebrity cameos that pop up all over the place. Sure, that Casper is pretty goofy-looking, but you have to love him – and Christina Ricci is cute as a button.

...Being an American ...its hard not to be offended by the stereotyping that Mr Clarkson carries on a bit too far on this program...well it would be if it weren't sadly...TRUE! As one of the few over here who's inseam is larger than his waistline, and who does know where Europe is and could name the countries I couldn't stop laughing at the ingenious combination of humor and information. I am slowly collecting the Clarkson DVDs from the UK and am jealous of you folks for the fact that you get to enjoy this type of program on a regular basis.
Highly recommended...

2 out of 5 stars A disappointing entry on Clarkson's CV........2007-04-19

I really do wonder what exactly America has done to Mr Clarkson to make him hate it so much. Not just the cars though, there appears to be a real hatred for the people there as well.

I have all the DVDs Clarkson has released, and each and every one previous to this has been brilliant. This new one is just a long (at times bordering on racist) attack on America. The challenges are ridiculously stacked in favour of a European victory (Mustang vs. Lotus and 300C vs. M5 for example) which makes any comparison totally pointless. I was really looking forward to this DVD but towards the end it became extremely tiresome.

I hope this is a blip on an otherwise excellent series of DVDs and this years release gets back to more evenly matched challenges and fun, exciting stunts.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining.......2007-03-30

Clarkson does not pull punches. Nor is he objective. He hates most things foreign (especially American) unless it is a good car. I first saw this on boxing day and thought it was great fun.
I thoroughy enjoyed this DVD and if you don't want to take Clarkson too seriously it is a good buy. But he does make you stop and think.

5 out of 5 stars Jezza, what a legend!.......2007-03-19

Got his DVD for Xmas 2006, stuck it in the DVD player straight away and I was blown away! Anybody who is a fan of the car reviews on Top Gear - the camera work, the music, the sound effects, the editing, the way the dialogue is constructed - will LOVE this DVD! Features some awesome cars, incredibly witty comments by Jeremy, an interesting experiment with a Lincoln and a Jag to see which one would make the best swimming pool... or reservoir!... and to finish it all off Jeremy takes the GT40 for a spin, literally! The camera work & editing in this DVD is top notch, as a media student I look at this stuff for inspiration every day! In sum - *must have* viewing for any car fanatic!

2 out of 5 stars Most Biased Thing I've Ever Seen.......2007-01-30

Ok, I'm a huge fan of Top Gear and I enjoy most things Jeremy Clarkson does, even if his way-over-the-top ham handed writing gets annoying after a while. Still, some of these "races" are ridiculous. For example:

- A Ford Mustang against a Lotus Exige. Are you kidding me? The Lotus Exige is probably the best handling car in existance, but that's because it's the size of a go-cart, and has nary a luxury in it. And for that you pay $76,500. Of course it's going to fair better on that winding track against a fully loaded Ford Mustang, with tons of modifications including a body kit. The size and weight difference alone makes it obvious which would win, if the fact that the Mustang, even with the Roush upgrades is still $20,000 cheaper.

- A Chrysler C300 versus a BMW M5? Seriously? The Chrysler C300 SRT8 is a $40,000 car. The BMW M5 is an $82,000 car. You could buy two of the former for the price of the latter. How in the hell are you even going to compare the two with a straight face? That's ludicrous!

I could go on, but I think these examples are enough. I know he's pitching this to the UK crowd, and they'll just eat it up, and yes European cars are genuinely better driving machines than American cars, which is why I felt that these ridiculous staged races were unnecessary. It's like laughing at a disabled person, but then again Clarkson was never much for tact.

The secret to "getting" Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow is appreciating that it's the film he's wanted to make his whole life. After the intimately expressive Edward Scissorhands, this is his most personal venture. Burton's Gothic style--apparent through all his work--stems from a childhood misspent watching the horror movies of Roger Corman, Hammer studios, and anything featuring his idol Vincent Price. For Sleepy Hollow Burton surrounded himself with his usual collaborators and friends; the production was almost entirely shot on location outside London to reunite him with key members of the crew he'd used a decade earlier in Batman, and also to capture the atmosphere of Hammer horror on its own turf.

Johnny Depp's Constable Ichabod Crane warmly emulates the mannerisms and enunciation of Peter Cushing. In a prologue scene Burton plays out a long-held fantasy by pitting Depp against Christopher Lee. And it is fantasy that categorises the film throughout, from the mythical fireside telling of the Hessian Horseman's origin (a mesmerising Christopher Walken), to the bright spots of colour saturating Crane's childhood dreams (featuring Burton's real-life love Lisa Marie). These moments literally shine out amid a meticulously crafted look for the film, which underwent a bleaching process to tone things down to an almost monochrome hue. The Scooby Doo-like whodunnit plot, concerning family lineage and petty vengeance, is naturally secondary to what Burton is aiming to achieve through photography and performance, which includes expressive cameos from Michael Gambon, Michael Gough, Jeffrey Jones, and Iain McDiarmid. Yet despite all these subtleties, it's also his best action movie: the swordplay betters anything from his earlier work, while the windmill escape and subsequent coach chase is truly breathtaking in choreography and execution. If you find a cheesy grin on your face for most of the film, you've "got" it. If not, see Hammer's Dracula at once! --Paul Tonks

4 out of 5 stars bollyrobics-dance workout by Julia Casper.......2008-01-11

Found this a very good, clearly set out dvd. Found the excersise/dance adequate for people who don't want to go mad, but would like to keep reasonably fit. The warm up and cool down are just right. I enjoyed the music and the movements very much, and sometimes do a pilates workout before this, so then it all knits together very satisfactorily! You definitely notice the toning up and there is a small amount of cardiovascular, especially for the newcomer to fitness. A very good dvd.

5 out of 5 stars The best aerobics dvd ever!.......2007-10-12

Wow,I just love the dances and the song.As a beginner I found it challenging at first, though it helped me a bit to have a basic bellydance background;in fact I think there are a lot of moves which are borrowed from bellydance!Mahi ve is probably my favourite and despite I was struggling to put the moves together at the beginning I actually mastered it after only a few days!
It's great fun and as a Bollywood fan I find it a fantastic way to exercise! It certeainly makes me feel exausted at the end!

4 out of 5 stars Fun for the dancing, but not a high impact workout.......2006-10-12

The good news first: unlike other Bollywood workout dvds (of which there are few) there's no poor dubbing or problems with the synchronisation of the music here. Everything sound related is well intact with "Bollyrobics". English instruction is offered in addition to Hindi and Spanish. That being said, I found the title a tad bit misleading. With the add on of "robics", I assumed that this dvd would be something of a dance-cardio fusion that might be fun for a high impact workout. While the warm up and cool down are alright, the actual workout is not what I'd consider an intense calorie-burner. That is of course,if you're looking for cardio activity. There are three dances to learn and each is taught step by step, with an awful lot of stop and go. This is great for learning the dance. It certainly is fun, and of course any activity at all is good for burning a few calories here and there. But be warned that even when one has mastered the dance and does it full speed there are still pauses and slower parts to the dance, so its not a continual impact routine. I just thought I'd mention it since the title might lead one to believe otherwise. That being said, if you like learning dances, this might be the dvd for you. I think its a decent intro to Bollywood dancing though too basic for experienced afficiandos. On the other hand, those with no experience in dance might find it a bit frustrating at first but I think after a few goes, the steps should start to come together with greater ease. In short, if you like to dance, or if you're looking for a lighter workout to augment your cardio routine, this is a good dvd. Bollywood fans take note: the music choices are not that great, in my opinion. Most music is from Weber's "Bombay Dreams", the only other Bollywood piece used is from "Kal Ho Naa Ho".

3 out of 5 stars A KIDS FILM THAT THEY WILL ENJOY.......2007-12-09

Actually, I found this mildly amusing, It didn't have that humor/storyline for everyone of a Shrek or Nemo, but that is okay. Not every Kid's Movie has to appeal to the whole family. Since this is a Kid's Movie, and I don't like to rate/inflict adult standards onto purely Kid's Movies outside of appropriateness -- message, if any; language and type of action, etc. The whole thing boils down to "How did the kids react to it?"

Well, the kids liked it a lot. And at the bottom line, when the day is done, that is what counts when you rent or take your kids to see a Kid's Movie. That being said, I am not interested in the complexity of plot lines, holes in story or academy award quality performances.

The kids say 7, and that is good enough for me.

    5 out of 5 stars Spook Time.......2007-09-19

Take a close look at the picture it Hilary Duff of Disney fame one of her early roles as Wendy the Witch who is very like Casper and friendly.

This is a good first film for Hilary and a fairly good starting point for the films which is continued with Casper and Capser a sprited begining.

So if you like Hilary buy thios and you get in her early years.

5 out of 5 stars A Fun, Wonderful Family Film!!!.......2005-07-09

    Hilary Duff AAA+++ & George Hamilton AA++

I must say that this is one of the sweetest, cutest films ever made. Hilary Duff is beautiful and her lead role as Wendy the Good Little Witch is pulled up with the alluring spunk and childish impishness that carries this delightful tale of Good over Evil.

And to be sure, George Hamilton as Desmond Spellman the evil Wizard/Male Witch is a perfect choice for the role of the heavey...along with his trademark "Is my hair OK?" self-indulgence and his magical way of being a really bad guy while still being fun. Hamilton is a real meanie, but in a light enough way that the whole family can watch without fear of foul words being uttered from his mouth, or some vulgar ethnic South Central L.A. ghetto gestures that are too overused today in too many movies today. Hamilton brings a classy elegance to the role of a villain we can hate, but like at the same time.

Wendy's aunts and the Casper's 'uncles' are played beyond perfection by each gifted actor/actress in those roles. They are hilariously funny, outlandish and perfect imitations of what the comic books and prior movies have led us to know them to be, all these years. Not remarkably it was like watching my favorite paperback episode come to life. You loved them all, but you really enjoyed it most when Wendy and Casper would achieve the upper hand.

Wendy/Hilary was tremendously successful in her part and viewing the Wendy Meets Casper was an experience akin to love at first sight. Love for the the prettiness of Hilary Duff, love for the sweetness we have learned to expect in both Wendy the Good Little Witch and Casper the Friendly Ghost, and love of a good time where the whole family can laugh at the magnificent special effects and the gaiety in the movie from beginning all the way to its happy conclusion.

On a scale of 1 to 5, Wendy Meets Casper can only be given a full 5!

10 points for Hilary Duff as the perfectly enchanting Wendy. 10 points for all the fab actors and actresses playing the co-lead and support roles 5 points for the storyline...a truly magical event 5 points for the special effects 5 points for Wendy in her dancing dress...*blushes

All in all, a must see for every family.

1 out of 5 stars Ever the optimist, I gave it a spin..........2007-02-04

... OH DEAR! I should have paid heed to the other, low-scoring reviews.
Don't be lured by the professional looking cover. This is pure amateaur night. It's poorly scripted, badly acted and just plain dull. And - as if falling short on these essentials wasn't bad enough, the sound quality is also hit and miss. Lunging from muffled mumbles one moment to TV vibrating Club sound track the next. Laughingly memorable was a café scene which must surely have been filmed during a monsoon - I don't know why the characters didn't just give in and continue in mime! So there you have it.... I wasn't expecting much and not much is about all I got. Don't waste your time or your money on Slutty Summer.
(For the record - this reviewer is a partnered, 45 year old gay male).

1 out of 5 stars My Own Fault!.......2006-11-07

OK, I admit it I was tempted by the cover image, it is slutty! It is also nothing to do with the movie beyond showing two of the 'actors'! This is one of those films made by people who know gay men will go and see them because they're gay and want to support the cause so they don't have to try very hard. The script was supposedly written by the lead actor but I think he was making his words up (slowly) as he went along - which can work if you're Mike Leigh but doesn't here. I actually enjoy some really bad movies which entertain with their awfulness but this just left me with a feeling of resentment for the time it took out of my life -avoid at all costs!

4 out of 5 stars Lightweight but lots of fun........2006-05-12

OK The title doesn't really help - Slutty sounds like a soft porn type film, which it isn't. This is an obviously gay, very lightweight, but very enjoyable film. The characters are over-the-top, yet I could recognise traits in friends of mine and it is easy to sympathise with them as the story evolves. Eventually, it all comes together and you realize that there are true emotions in there as well as all the camp and bitchiness.
There aren't that many good, enjoyable gay films around. "Mambo Italiano" comes to mind. This is at least as good. Give it a try, I'm glad I did.

1 out of 5 stars The name is provocative... .......2006-05-12

The name is certainly and interesting calling card, and that is where the story ends!!!

It is a stilted, wooden and not properly developed gay indie film - in which the main character is the played by the writer, producer and director... I think he must have been really low on funds, and unfortnaately it shows in a big way!!!

This story could have been properly developed into an interesting film, but it was not, it was basically a way for self-advertising for the guy behind and infront of the camera...

I would suggest, keeping your money and shopping for another title... or if you are truly bored, doing your laundry!!!

Gay indie films need not be this dire, as a group we are supposed to be more creative... this is a sad commentary on the quality of gay cinema!!!

1 out of 5 stars The worst movie I have ever seen!.......2006-04-24

If you think porn actors are bad ... wait till you see this movie. It is horrible. To say this is the gay version of "Sex and the city" is REALLY an insult to any self respecting gay person and to everyone who watches "Sex and the City". I fell asleep a couple of times during this movie. It is a really low budget production and not worth the money I paid for it.

If you want a movie to put you to sleep ... try this one!
