Bogie and Bacall at their best together.......2007-08-08
This was billed as "Hemingway's To Have and Have Not," but if there is one thing it isn't, it isn't Hemingway's novel. It is a fine quasi-remake of Casablanca (1942) with Humphrey Bogart playing essentially the same kind of character he played in Casablanca, a worldly wise, cynical America ex-pat who doesn't want to get involved in politics as the storm clouds of World War II gather. Instead of a saloon in Casablanca Bogie has a fishing boat in Martinique. Instead of Ingrid Bergman he has Lauren Bacall. Instead of Claude Rains as perfect of police, he has Dan Seymour as Capt. Renard working for the Germans. Instead of Dooley Wilson to play the piano and sing, he has Hoagy Carmichael. Instead of Peter Lorre as a sniveling lowlife, he has Walter Brennan as an alcoholic friend. In either case, Bogie ends up helping the Free French even though he'd rather not get involved.
This was Lauren Bacall's debut. She was 22-years-old and legend has it that she and Bogart, who was in his forties, fell in love during the filming. She plays a sultry babe with a hard edge, and she does it very well. Her famous line, "You know how to whistle, don't you Steve? You just put your lips together and blow" more or less defined her character.
I found Walter Brennan's Eddie annoying, but then I never liked lushes. Dan Seymour is memorable as the portly man with a scar who speaks with weighty precision as he works for the Vichy government. Hoagy Carmichael warbles a tune or two and Dolores Moran looks good enough to eat. Howard Hawks' direction is sharp and focused, although supposedly he was eating his heart out because Bacall preferred Bogart over him.
Clearly this is all about Bogart and Bacall, probably their best work together. They seem delighted with one another. And they were.
Wonderful movie .......2006-12-14
They dont make them like this any more, never mind that it's the first screen outing for Bogart & Bacall this is a great movie. The chemistry between the two leads is awesome. It's is the story of the little guy standing up to tyranny and winning through guile and determination and in the process getting the girl. Walter Brennan is excellent as the amiable drunk side kick to Bogarts wise cracking anti hero. It is a little like Casablanca but who cares when there are actors of this quality on screen. The ensemble case is excellent, the interplay between Bogart and Bacall is scintillating. Love this movie. It has heart and warmth in its soul.
Another Great Romantic Adventure.......2003-11-18
TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT is an unabashed sequel made for the purpose of capitalizing on the previous success of CASABLANCA. The similarities abound from the opening zoom-in-view of a Caribbean map to the assortment of characters which includes a cynical American ex-patriot entrepreneur, an irresistable female, a piano player, a gang of obnoxious Nazis and several locals who are fighting the Nazis. Besides Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, the cast includes Walter Brennan, Walter Sande, Marcel Dalio, Hoagey Carmichael, Paul Marion, Sir Lancelot and Dan Seymour.
Bacall and Bogart together are always worth seeing.......2002-07-01
I'm not in a position to say how closely the film version of 'To Have and To Have Not' follows the Hemmingway source novel (not very much, from what I understand), but I can say that the film is an absolute gem. Bogart plays a skipper of a fishing boat. As in Casablanca, he is trapped in foreign territory belonging to Vichy France. He cares little about the political situation until his hand is forced and he throws in his lot with the Free French. He's the cynic who turns freedom fighter, and no one does this more convincingly than Bogart. Lauren Bacall is the girl whom he falls in love with and who is the unwitting reason for his conversion. Its incredible to think that this is Bacall's screen debut. She was only nineteen when she made this film, yet her performance sizzles. She oozes more sex appeal than Mae West, and yet has more class than Lana Turner. Bacall and Bogart fell in love while making this film, and it shows. The electricity they generate between the two of them could power Las Vegas for a month.
The dialogue, written by Jules Furthman and William Faulkner, is as sharp as a knife. Howard Hawkes' direction is as masterly as always. Add a good supporting cast, especially Walter Brennan as a 'rummy' and a guest appearance from the singer Hoagey Carmichael, and you have all the ingredients of a classic film, which this certainly is.
Dark Passage is hardly likely to go down as one of Bogart and Bacall's greatest celluloid efforts. Bogart is beginning to look his age. The age difference may not have been that noticeable in 'To Have and To Have Not' and 'Casablanca', but a couple of years down the line and Bogart is beginning to look like Bacall's father.
The film starts with Bogart escaping from prison. We see everything though his eyes - literally. The camera is Bogart. This carries on until half way through the film. There is a reason for this, but I won't spoil it for those who have not seen the film. Although this is quite an intriguing idea, I can't say that it works to any great effect. All it does is make you aware of the camera. Why they would want to keep their star off the screen for half the film is a mystery to me. You literally spend that half of the movie waiting for Bogart to appear. Dark Passage has a 1930s B Movie feel to it, and must have appeared dated when it was released in 1950s. Entertaining enough if you catch it on telly or can borrow a copy, but hardly classic Bogart.

Serenity is a film that, by rights, shouldn't have been made. For starters, it's spun out of the short-lived and quickly-cancelled TV series Firefly, which has only itself got the full recognition it deserves on DVD. It then marries up two seemingly incompatible genres, the western and science fiction, has no major stars to speak of, and pretty much has `hard sell' written all over it.
Perhaps that explains its modest box office performance back in 2005. What it fails to reflect, however, is that this is one of the most energetic, downright enjoyable sci-fi flicks in some time. Not for nothing did many rate it higher than the Star Wars movie that appeared in the same year.
It follows renegade captain Mal Reynolds and his quirkily assembled crew, as they work on the outskirts of space, trying to keep out of the way of the governing Alliance. That plan quickly changes when they take on a couple of passengers who have attracted the attention of said Alliance, and thus the scene is set for an action-packed, cleverly written movie that deserves many of the plaudits that have rightly been thrust in its direction.
What's more, Serenity works whether you've seen the TV series that precedes it or not. Clearly fans of the Firefly show will be in their element, but even the casual viewer will find an immense amount to enjoy.
The only real problem is that given the film's box office returns, further adventures of Reynolds and his crew look unlikely. Unless Serenity turns into a major hit on DVD, that is. It's well worth playing your part in making that happen.--Simon Brew

Ron floats my boat!.......2005-06-21
One of the best family live action disney films ever! Capt Ron is the humerous geeza as the captain of a boat of yuppies who need to sail back to america from the caribbean seas with their inherited boat, this is a must have for any family that wants a nice film to watch on an afternoon, upon watching it many times it never gets old. In conclusion Ron is the captain of my boat!
A classic comedy........2001-03-15
This is an endearing comedy about a family inheriting a boat and learning a lot about what's important in their life.
Excellent Family Entertainment.......2000-09-06
This is a wonderful story about a family who inherit an old boat and end up having the adventure of their lives.Reluctantly the family sail set with "Capt Ron" who is a wonderful character played by Kirt Russell.Their adventure leads them through the Caribbean and unchartered waters. Its a film you can watch many times, each time catching another wonderful line you missed before for laughing so much (e.g-"we`ll be spontanious when we have more time") Martin Short is excellent as the bumbling Father who comes out on top.I highly recommend this film, it is a classic and one to keep forever.
Amazon.co.uk Review
Despite Nemesis bearing strong echoes of the Star Trek franchise's 1982 zenith, The Wrath of Kahn, the tenth film in the series sadly lacks Kahn's enormous conviction and resonance. That aside, Nemesis is still a strong, enjoyable effort containing all the Trek hallmarks, while making few concessions for non-fans. Following the wedding of Riker and Troi, the Enterprise is called to negotiate peace with longtime Federation enemies the Romulans, now led by the mysterious Reman, Shinzon (a malevolent Tom Hardy), who bears an unnervingly close link to Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart). At the same time, Data's (Brent Spiner) surprise discovery of an inferior prototype of himself leads him to make to some harsh human decisions.
Certainly, the film has a comfy familiarity to it, and there are no shocking changes of direction, but scriptwriter John Logan (Gladiator) and director Stuart Baird (Executive Decision)--both franchise newcomers--make some fine contributions. Logan imbues some scenes with fine seething drama, particularly between Picard and Shinzon, and introduces, in a psychic assault on Troi (Marina Sirtis), a hitherto unseen darkness in the Trek universe. Baird, meanwhile, offsets the series "talkiness" with some superbly realised--and brutal--action sequences. Should this indeed be the final voyage for The Next Generation Enterprise, then it could have been far worse. --Danny Graydon

Whats the complaining about?.......2007-06-20
I am not a huge Star Trek fan, but this really appealed to me when i found out that it was going to be a huge space battle. I have read mixed reviews on Amazon, one even saying that its a re-work of the Wrath of Khan, why? Because a main character dies? Nothing like it, rather a plastic review.
I agree that there is so much cheesy dialogue to Star Trek, it can make you pull faces in embarassment for the actors and most of what is said, just does not belong in the movie, but once you get past some of this in the opening, it becomes interesting that Picard fights his own dark side. A clone of himself, raised in a prison, that only knows hate and violence. The enemy ship, seemingly unstoppable, has you wondering how this will turn out.
The battle begins, with some of the best special effects I have seen in a while, then the Romulans come to the Enterprises assistance and the battle is up 3 fold.
It then becomes a life and death struggle to stop a deadly new weapon from desroying the entire crew of the Enterprise, then Earth.
When all the dust has settled and the original crew dis-embark, its leaves a sense of continuation and finally, closure.
It's a special effects advert for the fans, very enjoyable.
good production, good effects, thin plot........2007-02-01
Generally a good action movie, slowly paced, lacking the momentum of first contact and without the emotional ressonance and good visual design of insurrection.
mono tonality and unenthusiastic commentary (mr baird was probably fed up and sick of the project at this point)
Great effects, lots of nice explosions, well planned and exciting battle sequence in the final 3rd of the film.
3 stars = average, good production, good effects, great acting, slowly paced, unimaginative deflated score dragging the pacing further, poor dvd extras for the retail price. A general reflection of the deteriorating writing standard of the franchise between 2000 and 2005.
Still, enjoyable to watch, will sit nicely on the shelf, and with having most or all of the other films, you can't do without this one.
Good movie for an introduction to the decades of evolution of sci fi that is star trek.
Exciting and Dramatic, but Underwhelming end to Star Trek.......2006-11-09
Nemesis signalled the end of Star Trek. For some, it lives on through Enterprise or future releases of Yoyager or maybe even Deep Space Nine if it should be taken up again. For me, the Next Generation was the only spin-off to be worthy of the title, and now it has ended. While, Nemesis corrects some of the wrongs that flawed earlier films, it is underwhelming, and not quite as good as could be expected. Now some might say that such a great series as Star Trek could never end in style. I would point to the Undiscovered Country as to how brilliant the original cast and crew came to an end.
To start with the strong points, the Romulans FINALLY get some time on the silver screen. After endless films packed to the rafters with Klingons, we get a different villain, and they are superb. We learn about the set up of the Empire, with the Reman slaves. And Praetor Shinzon is a superb and complex antagonist and their ship is simply stunning.
Unfortunately, the flaws are numerous. The script, as it was with Insurrection is weak, with far too many poor comic lines thrown in for no reason. Also, it has been said before but is worth saying again that the script resembles the Wrath of Khan far too closely for comfort. However, as fine a villain as Shinzon is, he is no Ricardo Montalban and Data's death far too brief to being about the same reaction as Spock's death, and his 'wake' is sweet sorrow rather than devastating loss.
All in all, the film has great action and drama that was lacking in some of the earlier films and is a good way to end the series, but decidedly, it is the worst of the even numbered Trekkies.

characters wooden , script is a reworked wrath of Khan , direction meaningless.
Other than that it's ok !!!
A mundane end to the Next Gen,.......2006-09-15
Why is it that the Next Gen of Star Trek never really blossomed in films? Much like the previous three NG films, this feels too much like an extended episode of the TV show rather than the blockbuster film it should be. This film in particular is intended as a loose remake of the epitomy of Star Trek movies, The Wrath of Khan, but never comes near the sheer tension and adrenalin of that movie. Structurally it's near identical and you can tick off the similarities as you go : vengeful genetically engineered person marooned on barren world, check. Destructive weapon similar to Genesis device, check. Conflict in gaseous cloud that disrupts technology, check. Much loved character sacrificing himself to rescue the others. Check.
For some reason, it doesn't work. It's not down to the cast who are excellent as always. The director has, at least, tried to give the film some scale but the stodgy script, although strong on character, is weak on plot. It lacks the epic-ness that a final story should have and in that respect is akin to the final original cast movie. The battle between the Enterprise and the Scimitar should be one of the most scinitilating scenes of the movie but it's not. It's a fundamentally disappointing film and there is nothing here to suggest this couldn't have been done as a two part tv episode and would probably have benefited from a week gap to build up some tension.

Poor.......2008-02-11
I didn't like Serenity at all. I think I'd probably take the characters in Spaceballs more seriously than the ones in this film. I had heard an awful lot of good things about this film and I always welcome a science fiction film of genuine quality, but this was poor. I notice that one star reviews of this film are deemed unacceptable by some other reviewers, despite it being a matter of personal opinion. I wonder if I'll pick up a scorching one-line attack in the Comments section too.
A pleasant surprise, a very good movie........2008-01-25
I wasnt expecting anything special when buying this DVD, I didnt think the 'Firefly' TV series was anything but dull. Serenity however is classic intelligent sci-fi. The synic in me will say that this is basically Buffy in space, but if you can put the fact that the creator of this also created the terrible 'Buffy' series, you might actually enjoy this. The story is good, the acting suprisingly enjoyable and i found myself sucked in. ITs a shame it didnt do well at the box-office as you'll struggle to find a better sci-fi film in the past 5 years.

Wasn't sure what to expect from this film .I like sci-fi. I was pleasantly suprised at how good this film is. Didn't recognise any of the actors at all, that didn't matter. Effects were good and the story was plausible.
