Customer Reviews:
total delight.......2008-01-21
I would consider myself a big fan of the band but I only own one CD 'best of' so when I saw this going cheap I thought I'd chance my arm. Now, if you are like me and warey of many of these 'tribute dvds' which abound DON'T WORRY HERE. A fantastic surprise - a proper documentary with interviews and everything! It takes a song-by-song approach, using TV footage of performances at the time, the quality of which in some cases is fantastic.
Every 60s band deserves something like this. The main feature is about an hour with some additional songs and interviews as well. The interviews are a mix of mid 80s and the 2004/2005, so bring you up to date with the death of John etc. The only sadness was a lack of real interviews with Cass, but her personality shines through in the performances.
If you are a fan, order it now.
I can't believe my eyes & ears.......2006-02-21
Having enjoyed the sound of the Mamas & the Papas for many years, it was a delight to see them perform & hear the story of how they came together as a group. It is especially pleasing to see this hugely talented group performing live and largely unchoreographed, in contrast to the superficial presentation of less talented pop groups today. I agree with Barryrate that some of the songs can appear interupted by commentry and photographs, but in some cases, e.g. 'Creque Alley', such interuptions do help to explain the lyrics. It was also a revelation to hear Cass Elliot sing 'Make your own kind of Music' - what an incredible delivery, with both Cass and her audience clearly loving every minute of it.
the price appears a little expensive for a 90 minute DVD, so I purchased mine for a fraction of this from a reputable second-hand merchant on Amazon, as there are many examples currently available at low prices.
california dreamin' the songs of the mamas and papas.......2005-08-08
This fortieth anniversary dvd charts the short but impressive career of the Mamas and Papas with performances recorded mainly from their television appearances.
We get to hear the complicated harmonies and the John Phillips' marvelous arrangements that set this band apart from the rest and made them unique in the world of popular music.
Why is it that the makers of this musical documentary spoil most of the music by interupting it with with interview material.
The interviews are informative and interesting but would have been best placed at the end of each number without invading our enjoyment of the music. Instead of the full 5 stars the Mamas and Papas' music deserves I feel this Dvd has been slghtly spoiled by the intrusion of the narrative. But it is still worth getting this into your dvd collection.
